Chapter 902: Chapter 497: Waiting Isn’t My Style

"Bang!"

Inside the police station, Lin Baoguo slapped the desk so hard it almost fell apart, then he yelled at Heizi, who was huddled like a sparrow bracing for winter, "Where did Yan Fei go? Listen here, Heizi, you think you’re out of my reach, don’t you? Do you believe I can make sure you don’t get to go home for dinner today?"

"I really don’t know, Director Lin!" Heizi looked utterly aggrieved, as if he were a million times more wronged than Dou Er. Staring at Lin Baoguo’s palm, red from hitting the desk, he struggled to say just this one sentence after a long pause.

Looking at Lin Baoguo’s furiously red face, he continued to explain in a submissive tone, "If I knew, wouldn’t I have told you? He just said he was going out to take care of some errands but didn’t tell me what. You know how busy he is, managing everything in the venue all by himself. He’s always rushing here and there. Sometimes he gives notice before leaving; other times, he doesn’t even say a word before he’s gone. He really didn’t tell me anything this time."

"Don’t believe me? You can ask Accountant Xiang. She was at the cattle farm the afternoon Brother Fei left, and there were people all over the place. Brother Fei said he was going out to take care of some things and asked me to find someone to feed the tiger if he didn’t come back in the evening. I had no idea he would be gone for two days!"

Lin Baoguo lifted his palm, ready to hit the desk again when a uniformed officer beside him suggested, "Director Lin, maybe you should spare this desk! It seems like he really doesn’t know. How about this? We wait a little longer and see if we can find out anything from other sources?"

Then, turning to another uniformed officer, he asked, "Comrade Yang, what do you think?"

That officer, Comrade Yang, glanced at Lin Baoguo and then at Heizi, who kept his head down; a flash of anger crossed his eyes, but he didn’t reply and instead headed to the door.

The first officer smiled at Director Lin and muttered quietly, "The people from above are just too awesome. I’m stuck with this now and I deserve to suffer!"

He hurried after Comrade Yang, still asking as he chased, "Comrade Yang, seeing how Boss Yan, the person involved, isn’t at home, shall we talk to Boss Yan’s lawyer instead?"

Comrade Yang stopped, stared at the officer who had spoken, and after looking him over, sneered, "It looks like some real cleaning up needs to be done here. A small-town police station like this thinks it can do whatever it wants!"

Seeing that Comrade Yang was not hiding his displeasure anymore, the officer headed towards his car, saying, "Comrade Yang, you need to understand, I’m here to collaborate with you. If you think we’re not up to it, no one invited you! If you have instructions, just give them; otherwise, I’ll head over to Boss Yan’s farm. Maybe he’ll be back soon..."

Before getting into his car, he shouted towards the director’s office, "Director Lin, I’ll head to the cattle farm first. Call me if there’s any news."

After that, he started the battered Jeep and drove away, disappearing in a trail of exhaust fumes.

Comrade Yang turned a shade of green with fury. The two people waiting outside approached him and said, "Brother Yang, they’re still not handing over the person, are they?"

"Why don’t we make a request to seal off his cattle farm?" suggested another. "Drive everyone out and close the farm. I want to see who gets anxious then. Let’s see if he shows up once the cattle start starving to death..."

"The case hasn’t even been classified yet; on what grounds would you seal someone’s business? Besides, haven’t you asked around these past couple of days? That farm has thousands of cattle. Just try sealing it, and I bet you won’t even be able to leave this town!" Comrade Yang, already pale with anger, nearly slapped the man at this suggestion. "Let’s go, get in the car! We’ll also wait at the cattle farm. I refuse to believe he won’t show up!"

While the idea was vicious, it didn’t consider the context. On someone else’s turf, with a well-established and deeply rooted business, you can’t just seal it because you want to—that’s pure folly! Not to mention this was a business with strong local roots, and that was not the way to court disaster!

When Comrade Yang’s car left, and Heizi, who had been watching from the office window finally laughed, "Director Lin, shout and yell all you want, but could you please stop hitting the desk; it doesn’t hurt, does it? I think it’s time for a new desk. When Brother Fei gets back, ask him to get you a better one. This one is really not holding up..."

"What’s that way to talk to me?" Lin Baoguo glared at him, intending to retort with something defiant, but after seeing Heizi’s cheeky grin, he decided not to pretend anymore. Covering his hand and wincing, who’s hand wasn’t made of flesh, it would be strange if it didn’t hurt. "It hurts quite a bit. Tell me, do you really not know where Xiao Fei has gone? He’s been out of sight for the past couple of days, and I just don’t feel at ease."

"We’re even less at ease!" Heizi complained. "He said he was going to Provincial City to see how awesome these people really are. I’ve paged him a few times over the past couple of days, not once did he reply."

Lin Baoguo knew he wasn’t going to get anything out of him. He had been harried all day, asking the same question countless times. He waved his hand, signaling Heizi to leave, "You better head back to the cattle farm then! I don’t have anything else here, and let’s hope this kid doesn’t screw up, doing something stupid!"

After scouring Nanguang City far and wide, speaking with many people, and wearing out several pairs of shoes in just a few days, their lips were chapped, and their throats almost too hoarse to speak, they still couldn’t find the person who had run off with the donation money.
