Chapter 897: Chapter 495: Ran Too Well_3
Brother De looked at the surrounding hostile gazes and wished he could turn into an ostrich, burying his head in the ground so no one could see him. But now, staying silent wasn’t an option. He had claimed to be from Provincial City, but in reality, he was just from a small police station with little authority. The few people he had brought with him were close associates, and although they claimed to be on official duty, it was actually a "private job."
Now all these guys had been dragged into this mess by him, waiting expectantly for him to speak up. Biting his teeth in the end, he said, "We were originally here to transfer a prisoner, and your station is aware of this situation. Earlier on the car, the prisoner being transferred accused you of hitting them first, and we just came to understand the situation. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding occurred..."
Sitting in a chair, Yan Fei swept his gaze around the room, looked at the several of them, and smiled, "A misunderstanding is good. Since it’s a misunderstanding, that means everything is fine now, right? They are criminals with conclusive evidence. It’s all written in their statements. The ones who started insulting at my place were them, and they were also the ones who wanted to get physical. If I didn’t know some Kung Fu, I might have been beaten by them. Since when does someone who wants to hit others end up getting hit themselves, and you come to arrest me, the person defending themselves legitimately? Is this how you guys at the Provincial City police station handle cases?"
"We’ve already said it was a misunderstanding, a misunderstanding. We didn’t understand the situation well, otherwise, how could we have caused a misunderstanding?" Brother De was now hoping this ’misunderstanding’ could let him off the hook, refusing to admit he really intended to arrest someone.
"Alright then, if it’s a misunderstanding, let’s say it’s a misunderstanding!" Yan Fei smiled.
Brother De had just felt a moment of relief in his heart when he heard Yan Fei continue, "So, what about the prisoner you were transferring who robbed the police car and is now on the run from his crime?"
Damn it!
Brother De cursed furiously in his mind.
Who’s the real bumpkin here?
The object of Brother De’s curses wasn’t Boss Yan in front of him, but rather the Young Master he was berating in his mind.
Only after Yan Fei mentioned it did he remember that the guy had indeed run off, but even more importantly, he had taken off in a police car.
Still in a daze, he heard Yan Fei remind them, "Say, there weren’t any weapons in that police car, were there?"
Upon hearing this, Brother De completely collapsed. He just slumped in his chair as if drained of all vitality, as if Yan Fei’s words were some sort of spell that had sapped all his energy!
They didn’t carry weapons on them, but when they had set out, Brother De had applied to bring a handgun. Transferring prisoners from the police station went through official procedures, and applying for a firearm as a precaution was a perfectly reasonable request.
It was merely a formality, as they never planned on using it; it was strictly for instances of unexpected events on the road—after all, when you’re away from home, who knows what might happen.
Being a precaution, the handgun was locked in a small briefcase and hidden in the car—weapons are a serious matter, and one couldn’t be too careful. Since they felt the likelihood of using it was low, they naturally kept it well concealed.
Yan Fei had already deduced the situation from Brother De’s facial expression, mentally giving the Young Master’s actions a thumbs-up before saying with a serious face, "Having a weapon, that is a serious matter. A criminal has robbed a police car and is armed while on the run; this needs to be dealt with immediately. Heizi, call the station and tell them to report it quickly, make it clear. Say that a criminal has robbed a police car and is armed and on the run..."
"Xiaosong, go fill up my motorcycle with gas, put it in front of the door, and start it up to wait. I’m going to go chase after the guy..."
"By the way, comrade, I still don’t know what to call you. You came to transfer a prisoner, so you must be quite familiar with the situation of the criminal, right? Where do you think he would go into hiding?"
This was definitely rubbing salt into the wound; he was asking knowingly! No need to think about it, the aggrieved Young Master would run... where?
"Sorry about this, everyone. Let’s do this: everyone stay put for now. Your car isn’t up for it; surely you can’t catch up to the fugitive. I’ll chase after him on my motorcycle, and we’ll talk after I’ve caught him. For now, you all can sit here and enjoy some tea! And you, comrade, shouldn’t you be hurrying to call your superiors in the provincial office? To report this criminal stealing a police car and firearm?"
Brother De watched Yan Fei making arrangements, initially dismissive. The car they had driven was a newer model, chosen specifically for long-distance travel, with less than thirty thousand miles on it. Now that rascal had been driving for half a day—could you really catch up to him?
But as he listened to Yan Fei laying out each step, it became clear that the concern wasn’t really about catching the guy; it was about establishing the blame first.
No matter their true intentions, they came with the documentation to transfer a prisoner, and although it might not be recorded on the other end—just a piece of paper to be used temporarily—the fact remained a fact, and it couldn’t be changed.
As long as they could pin the crime of the prisoner robbing the police car and fleeing on them during the transfer, then the seriousness escalated. Extortion, inciting trouble—all of that was trivial matter compared to this!
"Well, if we could catch the person first, that would be fine, and we can just report back once we return. There’s no rush this instant; let’s focus on catching the guy!" Brother De said evasively, as making that call would mean trouble for him, big trouble!
"Make the call quickly! Are you afraid of taking responsibility? Consider the consequences carefully. If he uses the gun to do something else or hits someone with the car, you won’t escape the blame either. What if he doesn’t make it to his intended destination?" Yan Fei reminded him with a cold sneer.
