Chapter 862: Chapter 483: Be Cautious and Attentive

To build an entire base with wood, let alone the other parts, just the walls alone would consume countless pieces of lumber, and they couldn’t be small pieces either. It definitely wouldn’t be a day or two’s work.

So, when work wrapped up in the evening and all the laborers were sent back to the valley, Yan Fei returned to the cattle farm.

In the past few days, since Yan Fei secured a beef jerky order in Provincial City, Pang Fa saw hope for the beef jerky factory’s ’rise’ and was filled with energy. When Yan Fei returned in the evening, the lights were still on and they were working overtime at the factory.

No sooner had Yan Fei said there was no need for overtime than Pang Fa, standing his ground, said, "It’s still hot outside, can’t sleep after dinner anyway, so what’s the harm in working a little longer?"

And those being exploited by the unscrupulous factory manager, Pang Fa, had not a single complaint. They all unanimously declared that overtime was voluntary and justified. In the end, Yan Fei simply let them be. At worst, he’d just pay them a little extra when it came time for wages. With beef in the cold storage and orders to fill, they were like cats on hot bricks, eager to turn all the beef into jerky and sell it off.

The true problem, when you got down to it, was Yan Fei’s initial attitude. He originally didn’t care about the beef jerky factory’s performance, and that included people like Old Master Xing who feared that he might just get by and give up on the beef jerky if it didn’t show profits after a while.

For Yan Fei, it wasn’t impossible to abandon the factory. After all, he had always been indifferent to the small profits from beef jerky, but others depended on working more for their wages and bonuses. They needed it to live their lives and were more concerned about the factory’s well-being than the boss himself, fearing they might lose their work.

Nowadays, many folks around the cattle farm made extra cash thanks to the farm’s business. For instance, when things got busy, they’d call people over to clean up cattle manure or do some dirty, tiring work, which really wasn’t a big deal for rural folks.

These times could be considered the golden age of enterprise development. The countryside was full of labor, the only shortage was money in hand. Offer a few bucks for half a day’s work, and people would scramble to answer the call.

So, in the days when Yan Fei was away, the changes to the cattle farm were no more than an increase in the number of cattle—and everything else was in good order. And it was clear that the farm spent less when he was absent. Usually, when he was around, he was never thrifty with living expenses. But when he wasn’t, others wouldn’t be as extravagant. This included external purchases like buying cattle and straw—the prices were bargained down even more tightly without the boss around.

After making a round and hearing about the various affairs at the farm, Yan Fei felt somewhat idle. Before he even finished listening, he went to check on the greenhouse by the bamboo grove by the river.

The people at the farm had gotten used to this. The boss used to get his hands dirty with work, but now he’d gradually become a hands-off manager, only checking the accounts every now and then to ensure the farm had enough money to operate.

Upon returning to the cabin, the tigers and black bears excitedly greeted Yan Fei, creating a quite a commotion with their roars and calls. These animals were inherently wild and even though they didn’t lack food and drink without Yan Fei, and others might even take care of them with more diligence, they didn’t get a chance to roam. Seeing their master return, they couldn’t have been more thrilled.

Yan Fei wouldn’t disappoint them, he picked each one up and threw them into the river estuary, on the plain where wooden logs lay, allowing them to freely frolic and have fun.

As for himself, he was off with a chainsaw to work overtime devastating the forest.

The river’s estuary was the territory of the Suchomimus family, which had already learned its lesson under Yan Fei and wouldn’t dare harass his pets. Other large carnivores wouldn’t dare come close either, so he was very confident about the safety of his animals.

Besides, these animals weren’t stupid. Even in the event of an unexpected encounter, the smaller carnivorous dinosaurs were no match for this group of well-coordinated creatures. If larger carnivores approached, they could use their agility, along with the scattered logs on the ground, to engage in a clever battle of wits and strength.

Yan Fei, busy with chopping down trees, also had a lot on his mind. He realized he lacked not just a little, but a great deal for building the base. In fact, he had basically nothing. The thought of sourcing heavy construction machinery was utterly outlandish—the deficit was enormous. For the time being, his procurement meant buying a few chainsaws and sneaking off to buy a couple of barrels of diesel like this; clearly, it wasn’t a sustainable solution.

He reckoned he’d likely need to take another long trip soon, to procure some free heavy-duty and construction tools. As for where to go, currently, there was only one place from which he felt no guilt ’taking’ things—Japan.

After all, the old ancestors said, "Those who are not of our kind will surely have different hearts!"

To greater China, every penny that others lost was akin to a penny earned. If the whole world except China reverted to primitive society, wouldn’t China then unify the globe?

Of course, that was just a naïve dream of a small-town hick. But undermining others is something everyone does. Otherwise, why would the country place such importance on developing overseas markets? Because Earth is only so large. More resources for others meant fewer for one’s own country.

Thinking this way, Boss Yan felt his vision had broadened to a global scale, and suddenly, he felt even more energized. Trees that might have grown for who knows how many years were felled one by one, as he sawed through them with his small chainsaw, toppling them amidst the rustling sounds of the forest.
