Chapter 844: Chapter 468: Leave After Accomplishing the Task

"Damn it, why won’t these mosquitoes just die!" He had just sprayed insect repellent, but being in such an environment, the bandit still felt unbearable discomfort all over.

Perhaps he had grown too accustomed to wining and dining that he had forgotten the hardships of his earlier days as a small-time thug, to the point that even this kind of environment was becoming intolerable.

He was even beginning to envy his companion nearby, who seemed content being brawnier and simpler-minded. At least that guy seemed unperturbed no matter the setting. With that thought, he turned his head to look in the other direction.

And then, he suddenly opened his mouth wide, as if he had seen a ghost.

In fact, he actually had seen a ghost.

He saw a shadowy figure suddenly appear behind his partner, who was holding the binoculars and preparing to diligently survey the distant area once again. The figure reached out, grabbed his companion, and disappeared in an instant.

Before he could make a sound, he saw the shadowy figure reappear, reach out for him, and then he felt his surroundings change.

The night sky was still filled with stars, the location still seemed like ’the desolate wilderness.’

Only, the desolate wilderness here was clearly nothing like the desolate wilderness from before.

Although they had been on a mountain earlier, where they could see cars bustling along the distant highway, here, under the starlight, there were only rolling hills, and now he found himself among those hills.

Hills? Seeing hills that rise and fall?

What he was actually seeing were frightful, monstrous beasts.

Monstrous beasts...

It was only then that the bandit, covered in insect repellent, realized that he was surrounded by countless, bizarrely shaped monsters. Each one was as big as a small hill, which made him instinctively step back. Suddenly, he felt a breeze from behind; turning around, he saw he had stepped right next to the mouth of a monster, and that breeze was the creature’s breath...

Upon this realization, he went limp and sat down on the ground, about to scream.

In the blink of an eye, someone pounced over and covered his mouth with a hand.

He instantly resisted, but then he heard a soft whisper from behind, "Don’t shout, don’t shout, if you startle these beasts, we’re done for..."

He knew the voice very well—it was his look-out partner, not the one who had just disappeared but another who was also on lookout duty.

Sure enough, he was dealing with someone who was used to staking his life every day; he suppressed his fright and gradually settled down. Once his companion sensed he was no longer resisting, he released his hand.

"Am I dreaming?" he asked in a trembling voice. "What the hell is this place? How did we get here?"

"Don’t know, we have no idea what’s going on either," the person behind him answered.

"We?"

The bandit caught the implication in the word and turned his head slowly to see the guy whom he had just deemed simple-minded. That guy was also being restrained by someone to keep him from making a noise.

Clearly, the one muffling the simple-minded guy was also their companion. Besides the four of them, there was another person sitting, and two others lying motionless on the ground.

Although the stars twinkled in the night sky, it was still not daylight, and he could not see his comrades’ expressions. However, once he calmed down, he detected a very peculiar smell in the air.

He knew that smell all too well and quickly located where it was coming from.

Underneath what looked like a small hill but was actually a monster, there was a leg sticking out and a small portion of a body, next to a pool of something he could not see clearly but was certain he did not want to see.

The person next to him, seeing that he was looking that way, whispered, "Old Gui startled the beast just now, and when it shifted its body, he ended up like that. He didn’t even grunt before his insides spilled out, damn bad luck. If I hadn’t run fast, I would have ended up the same."

"Stay quiet, don’t you pass out on me, stay alert. As long as we don’t disturb these creatures, we are safe. Those two guys who always brag about being courageous fainted as soon as they got here. Don’t mind them; they’re all alive. It’s just Old Gui’s bad luck. He happened to be right by the monster..."

Although the person behind him tried to speak calmly, his voice was unmistakably laced with terrified restraint.

Even without understanding the situation, he trusted that his lifelong buddy would not harm him, and with the example before them, he also knew it was best to stay put for now. The beasts around them were quiet, but once awakened, they could easily crush these few insignificant humans, if not eat them.

As they were talking, three figures appeared in front of them in a blur. However, one of them disappeared again, leaving only two behind.

These men could all be considered ’comrades-in-arms,’ and were intimately familiar with each other. Even in the meager light of the stars that rendered everything indistinct, they could still recognize their own partners.

The two new arrivals reacted much like the bandit when they appeared, first confused and then quickly coming to their senses. But these two were fierce; they dodged instantly and even reached for their waists.

It was clear that upon finding themselves in a new environment, their first instinct was to seek safety. As for why they reached for their waists, the bandit knew without guessing, but he also realized that the gun he had been shouldering had vanished without him noticing. It had been there right before they appeared in this place, and now he couldn’t remember when it had disappeared.
