Chapter 841: Chapter 465: The Opportunity to Earn a Few Billion
’Roasting green soybeans’ isn’t primarily about eating; eating is important but not the key point. The crux is that these soybeans are ’stolen’.
Those green soybeans are just the mature or nearly mature soybeans in the fields. Rural naughty children have all done this: while out playing behind their families’ backs, they pull up the soybeans with the roots and then run to the roadside to roast and eat them.
This is actually in a primary school textbook—Mr. Zhou, a great writer, wrote an article about it, where naughty children ’stealed’ soybeans and roasted them to eat—even if they are from their own fields, it still counts as stealing since it’s done without the adults’ knowledge.
However, the naughty children in the town are somewhat lacking. If they’ve never done farm work and can’t even tell if the soybeans are ripe or not, then that just won’t do.
There’s another key to doing this: you’ve got to choose a good spot. The best place is near a riverbank, so after eating you can take a bath, or else the black ash that sticks to you won’t come off clean—burning the stalks along with the beans, you pick beans out of the ash to eat and inevitably end up black-faced with dirt as you play and eat.
Actually, there’s an even better place, by the brick kiln. You can catch a few large crabs from the river; the weather is cool and pleasant, which is perfect for eating crabs. Placing the crabs on the clay walls of the kiln where they seal it, they soon roast to a crisp golden brown, even the crab legs are crackling crispy when eaten.
Of course, roasting green soybeans along with a few sweet potatoes and corn cobs is to be expected; only the inexperienced would stick to just soybeans.
This activity also requires experience. Novices like to choose large sweet potatoes, thinking they’ll get more to eat, but that just shows inexperience. Once the fire is out, these greedy folks find that the sweet potatoes are only cooked on the outside, still raw on the inside. Too small isn’t good either, the whole thing gets burnt, leaving nothing edible.
Choosing the right variety of sweet potatoes is also important; red-fleshed sweet potatoes taste the best. There’s a white-fleshed variety nowadays, but it’s not as tasty.
Apart from that, the most crucial thing is to keep a good eye on the fire, to avoid starting a wildfire. The rural folks know the kids like doing this since everyone grew up the same way; they don’t emphasize not to roast green soybeans. But they do emphasize that someone should always watch the fire.
This ’knowledge’ is known to all rural first graders, but for the likes of Yang Qian and Jiao Bing, that’s not the case. Luckily, they weren’t dumb and knew their limitations, so they roped in someone more capable to join them.
In fact, Yan Fei hadn’t done much of this before, but he knew the basics. Most importantly, unlike these two, who had no clue where to ’steal’ from, he didn’t have to worry about not being able to procure anything.
As he walked, glancing at the farmland on either side of the road, it didn’t take long for Yan Fei to find his target. He parked his motorcycle, leaped over the ditch, and picked out a bundle of soybeans.
Yang Qian and Jiao Bing were so nervous, looking around cautiously, on guard in case someone would see them. When they saw Yan Fei emerge with the soybeans, they rushed over to take them: "Where are we going to roast them?"
Yan Fei, seeing their excited expressions, didn’t know what to say. Knowing they’d mostly be too scared to do this sort of thing right by the main road, he indulged them and said, "Carry these, let’s head to the riverbank to roast them."
Yan Fei turned the motorcycle around and headed back, then after passing the bridge, he followed a small path along the river and finally found a relatively clean spot.
Yang Qian and the other jumped off the motorcycle and set down the soybeans. Spotting a sweet potato field not far away, temptation struck them: "Yan Fei, why don’t we dig up a few sweet potatoes and roast them too?"
Yan Fei reminded them, "This is someone else’s land; will you dig up sweet potatoes and roast them right here?"
"Oh..." The two guys realized then and there, and with the day not being young anymore, fiddling for some sweet potatoes just to move somewhere else seemed like a bad bargain. "Forget it, let’s start the fire!"
Looking at each other, then in unison, they said, "You start the fire! I didn’t bring a lighter..."
"Could you two be any more unreliable?" Yan Fei was at a loss for words. It was lucky he had matches handy, or these two could have really messed things up.
That was the least interesting but most joyful ’roasting green soybeans’ Yan Fei had ever experienced. It was just a pile of fire starting up, but these two were so excited from that moment, ending up with faces full of black ash while eating. They stayed until the sky was completely dark, leaving the place with great satisfaction and reluctance—especially upon leaving, looking back at the pile of wood ash, with a sense of lingering attachment that left one speechless.
With the two in tow, just as they reached the main road, Yang Qian shouted, "Stop the bike, stop; let’s not go back just yet. Let’s take a bath under the bridge before we go!"
These two lads had been afraid of snakes near the riverside with the Forest of Gangchai around, not even daring to wash their hands in the river. Now that they were at the bridge overhead, they finally mustered the courage. Beneath the bridge was fine sand at the river bottom, an ideal spot for frolics and bathing, nothing to fear with the crowd.
Yan Fei relaxed completely in their company and didn’t hesitate to turn the motorcycle around and drive straight down from the bridgehead.
"Ow, ow, ow..."
"Ahhhh..."
The pair were scared into howling, filled with thrill and excitement. It wasn’t until they reached under the bridge that they looked back at the path they came down, their faces filled with shock: "Yan Fei, you’re ruthless! It’s so steep, and you just drove down; are you not afraid of dying..."
Yan Fei just chuckled, "Exciting, isn’t it..."
"Damn exciting!" They didn’t know what else to say, only able to use a swear word to describe their agitated emotions.
Yan Fei had just parked his motorcycle when his pager suddenly started beeping urgently.
Yang Qian and Jiao Bing had already stripped, ready to dash to the river, but seeing Yan Fei check his pager, they asked curiously, "What’s up? Do you have something to do?"
Yan Fei pondered for a moment, "No big deal! Go wash up quickly! I’ll take a quick shower later and have to leave; I need to head back soon. Do you two need to go back with me?"
Yang Qian thought for a moment, "If you have things to take care of, go ahead, don’t mind us. We have to wait until evening self-study is over before heading back, not to mention we have to wait for our hair to dry, otherwise, we’d give ourselves away, right? You hurry up; we’re going to play..."
After saying this, the two guys immediately howled and dashed into the river, kicking up the yellow sand.
Just as Yan Fei had taken off his shirt, the two guys had already splashed into the river, with Jiao Bing energetically thrashing in the water and shouting, "Yan Fei, come down quickly, the water’s fantastic, the temperature is just right."
The river was teeming with people, and this guy was thrashing around without a care for if others would get annoyed!
Yang Qian reminded Jiao Bing on the side, "Stop splashing. Wash the black ash off your face first. If you don’t clean it thoroughly and go home, you’ll get a beating..."
All of a sudden, a voice nearby said angrily, "Even if you don’t come home, I can still beat you two! Has evening self-study ended, or did you skip it to come here for a bath? Oh, right, I heard a motorcycle coming from the east side of the bridge earlier, you two skipped evening self-study tonight, didn’t you?"
"Surely they didn’t dismiss school yet. I’m saying this kid told his dad this afternoon that he couldn’t come back for dinner because self-study was too pressing; looks like he’s just learned to skip classes at the start of the term!" another voice chimed in.
Jiao Bing’s movements came to an abrupt halt, standing there like a puppet, and after a moment of confusion, he said with some uncertainty, "Uncle, you’re here for a bath as well?"
He wasn’t the most miserable one, just bumping into an uncle; Yang Qian, who had also suddenly frozen, was completely soulless by now. He slowly turned his head and couldn’t see clearly in the darkness, but he had heard the previous sentence very clearly, and with a mournful expression, he said, "Dad, you’re here for a bath too?"
The river burst into roaring laughter, as everyone soaking in the water found it hilarious.
When Yan Fei rode his motorcycle down, he came with a fierce presence. Everyone else had descended from the gentler slope on the other side, while they had come down the steep slope. These two scoundrels were still howling away, who wouldn’t have seen them coming down?
And just as they had arrived, they were caught red-handed by a parent, and what was even worse, they were even caught skipping classes...
It really was hilariously unfortunate!
Yan Fei had just placed his shirt on the motorcycle when the aforementioned incident happened. Now, seeing everyone on the riverbank laughing, he felt quite embarrassed. After all, it was he who rode the motorcycle and took the two delinquents out of school; and now to be seen by someone’s parents, it was downright unlucky.
He simply picked up his clothes and put them back on, yelling towards the river, "I’ve got something urgent, I’m leaving first!"
This wasn’t the time to be loyal. Let those two naughty children honestly accept their criticism and education!
But his motorcycle was unique in town; who wouldn’t recognize it? As they saw him about to leave, someone shouted, "Boss Yan, what a rare visitor! Come down for a bath with us! There’s a big crowd, it’s really lively..."
It was dark, and some people became bolder, knowing full well that Boss Yan wouldn’t get angry at this moment; it wasn’t just one or two people shouting.
Yan Fei laughed and started the motorcycle, "I’m going, I have to deal with some urgent matter..."
In truth, this matter wasn’t urgent but couldn’t exactly be considered non-urgent either.
It was something that couldn’t be easily discussed.
Originally, Yan Fei wanted to take a quick dip in the river to wash off before leaving, especially since those two scamps had caused wood ash to scatter everywhere, and he didn’t want to return with ash on him. But now, it was better to hurry back.
The pager message from earlier was from The Sixth Miss Guo in Hong Kong. Usually, this young lady paged mostly out of boredom, just leaving a message asking him when he could supply beef.
Today, she didn’t rush him for beef but sent a cryptic message: "Your chance to make a few hundred million has come, call back when you’re free."
Did Yan Fei have the chance to make a few hundred million? Definitely.
If he took some items from Dinosaur World and found a buyer, he could surely make a few hundred million.
But Miss Guo wouldn’t know about that, so her message definitely wasn’t suggesting that he sell dinosaurs.
Although the message was uncanny, Yan Fei understood its implications.
The last time Miss Guo came over, she mentioned something. Someone in Hong Kong had kidnapped a person, demanding a ransom of ten billion at once. At that time, Yan Fei joked, saying that Hong Kong really is a great place.
What followed was, if I saved someone, they would only need to give me half of whatever they extorted. Or, simply wait until the kidnappers received the money, rob them, and just like that, earn several billion...
Obviously, or rather, unfortunately, Miss Guo’s message might just mean that.
