Chapter 838: Chapter 462 Pulling Beef

"Alright, you all get ready, I reckon I’ll be back before dawn. When the time comes, everyone needs to get up and move the beef, so go get some sleep now!" Yan Fei waved to the crowd, hopped onto the big truck, slammed the door shut, and skillfully started the FAW Big Truck.

Two headlights lit up, and the big truck burst through the gate, speeding away into the distance.

The truck raced along the highway to the west and, when it reached the tollbooth of the neighboring county, it even put on quite a show by having the truck weighed, after which it paid the fee and continued on.

Right next to the tollbooth were the traffic police on night duty, who, seeing how adeptly he was driving over the scales, assumed he was an experienced driver. They had no clue that the guy who had just passed under their noses wasn’t even old enough to have a driver’s license.

Who could have imagined such a daring individual? Normally, if someone was driving illegally, upon seeing traffic police they would either make a quick turn to escape or, if they couldn’t avoid them, would approach and readily admit their mistake, hoping to get a lighter fine. But who would have thought to throw himself right under the scrutiny of the police...

In fact, Yan Fei wasn’t the least bit afraid. Nighttime was different from daytime, and even at a tollbooth with lights, visibility wasn’t great. He did have a driver’s license on the truck—Old Ou’s paperwork was there. The young men all looked similar, none with crooked noses or slanted eyes, and the photo was a black and white one, making it hard to tell them apart. If it came down to it, he could bluff his way through.

After passing the tollbooth and driving a bit further, he found a small road to turn off into and stopped. Then, the truck window rolled down, and a little black bird, Xiaohei, flew in mid-air, surveyed the surroundings, and finding no one and no cars, allowed the big truck to be taken into the dinosaur world as well.

In the huge ice storage at the North Pole, the earliest batches of beef had frozen into large chunks, which to the uninformed might appear to have been frozen for many days.

The freezing was indeed effective here, and Yan Fei was worried that continuously adding beef with its own temperature might raise the interior temperature, so all the beef was first thrown onto the external ice and snow to freeze before being placed inside.

That white dinosaur had never returned since leaving. After watching for a couple of days, Yan Fei understood that the creature was a wanderer, catching its prey by the sea and, after eating its fill, would find any place it deemed safe to sleep soundly.

The disorderly scattering of the bloody beef, however, attracted a few smaller dinosaurs. This forced Yan Fei to use force to drive away these little creatures that coveted his beef.

Now, in those valleys where the cattle were pastured, each had two or three laborers helping to watch the cattle. With enough cattle already killed, these people were responsible for cleaning up the valleys—including those in the cave by the circular lake. Those left over had quickly realized the situation; by the second day, they all submitted and came out to work.

Within just a few days, although Yan Fei had been careful, still over a hundred cattle were lost to unknown poisonous insects, and one of the people responsible for cleaning the valley was also bitten to death by accident.

However, compared to humans, the spirit of all creatures, these things were always insignificant. In a day or two, these people, employing various means, had managed to drive all those strange and bizarre things out of the valley. They were mostly bugs and the like, and like those with strong venom appeared quite dangerous, their weaknesses were equally obvious. By simply burning some insect-repelling plants, they were able to contain them.

After circling above the Arctic a few more times, to broaden his observational range, Yan Fei began loading the truck when it was around midnight.

The frozen beef was rather convenient to load, and it didn’t take much effort to finish the task.

He still had to wait a bit to let the ice thaw slightly, to prove he had spent half the night driving the truck filled with beef. Otherwise, if he returned right away, with the ice on top showing no signs of melting, it would be somewhat implausible. Thinking this way, Yan Fei felt he was getting more and more adept at this kind of deception.

After eating and drinking his fill at Vegetable Garden Island and then sleeping soundly for three or four hours, he saw that the sky was about right and flew out of the dinosaur world. In the early morning, there were even fewer vehicles on the road, and absolutely no people. The big truck appeared on the road and headed back.

Returning to the toll station, I weighed the truck again and went to pay the overweight fine and the toll fee with the weighing slip in hand. Since I had voluntarily weighed the truck, which showed a good attitude, they didn’t charge me much extra for the excess weight—it’s also tough on the toll station staff late at night. When they encounter someone with a good attitude who doesn’t dawdle, they feel better and might charge less, leaving everyone in a good mood!

These days, it’s quite normal for big trucks to be overweight. Domestic FAW Big Trucks are top-quality, with a rated carrying capacity of forty tons, but hauling fifty or sixty tons is common, and seventy or eighty tons isn’t unusual. The most extreme are the trucks hauling steel; they don’t look heavily loaded, yet they’d scare you to death if you weighed them—excluding the vehicle, just the cargo can weigh over a hundred tons!

Anyway, this area is all flatlands, there are no mountain roads, and as long as trucks can run on the road, we dare to keep loading them.

So, if your truck isn’t overweight, that’s abnormal. If the traffic police find your truck isn’t overweight, they might just come up to check the cargo and see if all your paperwork is in order—since it’s not overweight, there must be something fishy! Perhaps, you’re transporting contraband, or your documents aren’t complete, and you don’t dare to load up...

No wonder the roads get damaged so quickly! It’s not necessarily because of shoddy construction. Even well-built roads are no match. When you think about it, roads designed to handle only a few dozen tons are being crushed and ravaged by these overweight trucks every day—it’s pitiful really, and no surprise they deteriorate fast...

Yan Fei didn’t weigh the truck for no reason; it was for accounting purposes. The amount of goods procured needed to be recorded, and although the source of the beef wasn’t quite legitimate, the necessary procedures still had to be followed. Later, when selling the dried beef, we’d have to pay taxes on it, and these were part of our costs.

The big truck returned to the ranch, and with a honk of the horn, dogs inside began to bark uproariously.

Soon, a group of lads hustled over and began to unload the goods with their many hands. Yan Fei couldn’t just stand by—he could do the work of several men alone, and some of the frozen beef blocks were so large they required several people to carry them.

Not Yan Fei, though; he simply lifted and carried them over to the cold storage by himself.

While unloading, just as we were about to finish offloading a truckload of goods, Pang Fa ran out from the cold storage, "Xiao Fei, what do we do if we can’t fit any more inside?"

"What?" Yan Fei was taken aback. "Didn’t you say the cold storage could hold at least fifty tons?"

"It’s said to be fifty tons, but in reality, it can’t hold that much. The shelves inside also take up space, and these large blocks of frozen beef can’t be organized neatly. It’s already full now," explained Pang Fa.

Yan Fei refused to admit that he hadn’t estimated correctly when loading the truck, which was already a bit over, and he argued, "See, I told you I could have stacked it properly if I went in, but you wouldn’t let me. Now you can’t fit it all because of your stacking, right?"

Pang Fa was quite frustrated, "Even if you could fit it in, we have to be able to take it out too, right? Let’s not talk about this now, let’s think about what to do with this beef."

The cold storage was small to begin with. It wasn’t a problem for someone as strong as Yan Fei to play around with the beef like they were toys, but surely we couldn’t expect him to come every time we needed to take them out to thaw them, right? It’d be troublesome enough to call him every day. That’s why Pang Fa initially didn’t let Yan Fei stack the beef, instead allowing him and two others to arrange it according to their capabilities—to ensure it wouldn’t be a hassle for others when it needed to be moved out.

"How about we start processing it right now?" Xiaohei suggested from the side. "We’ve got plenty of people, and working overtime is nothing big."

Everyone immediately agreed with this suggestion, and Pang Fa nodded, "I think that’s a good idea. We can start now. There’s still some time before we have to feed the cattle. Let’s get ready now, continue after feeding them, and ensure the beef doesn’t spoil!"

Yan Fei looked at the remaining beef on the truck, estimated the approximate amount, and thought aloud, "Alright, you guys quickly get ready. I’ll move the rest to the workshop. We don’t need to process it all—just as much as we can until breakfast. We can leave the rest, wait until it’s fully thawed, and take it to the town... Uh, that’s right, Teacher’s Day is coming up, we’ll go offer gifts to the teachers..."
