Chapter 834: Chapter 458: Renewed Vigor, Life Abounding Everywhere
"Old Uncle Ding, your braised meat is getting more and more fragrant!" Yan Fei, munching on a big piece of pig’s ear, hung a pack of braised meat and a roast chicken on his motorcycle, and didn’t forget to compliment Old Ding before he left.
Old Ding couldn’t have been happier, "Haha, if Xiao Fei says it’s good, then it must be really good..."
As soon as Yan Fei’s motorcycle had gone, Old Ding began boasting to the people nearby, "See that? The big boss of the cattle farm, can’t even finish all his beef every day, still comes to buy our braised meat. You should hurry up and try some..."
Now, Old Ding’s business had expanded. Initially, he only sold braised meat, which was pork head meat, along with pig offal like intestines, and also dried tofu skin. Now, he’s even started making roast chicken. When Yan Fei returned from school just now, he insisted on tearing off a chicken thigh for Yan Fei to try. Feeling embarrassed, Yan Fei simply bought some braised meat and a roast chicken to take with him.
Not wanting to go back for lunch, he planned to mooch a meal off someone with these items in tow.
Reaching the entrance of the township government, he greeted the gatekeeper and parked his motorcycle in the shady spot inside the gate, then headed toward a row of small houses in the back.
Arriving at the door of one room, he called out from behind the curtain before even entering, "Uncle Chen, are you guys at home? It’s Yan Fei, here to scrounge a meal..."
This was where Mayor Chen’s family lived. The government compound was big enough that these old houses were used as dorms. However, most of the workers here were locals, so not many lived on-site. Those old houses felt eerily quiet at night, and most people didn’t like living there.
Both Mayor Chen and his spouse worked, and with Yan Fei having been delayed a bit at Old Ding’s place, they had only just finished cooking when he arrived.
People in the township thought the leaders ate luxuriously every day, but the mayor’s household wasn’t much different from any regular household. They just ate meat more often than the local farmers, but not necessarily more than those doing business in town. After all, that was the standard of living in the small town—Mayor Chen couldn’t have bought anything special even if he wanted to.
In the pot were plain noodles topped with a few green vegetables and a few shreds of meat, lightly anointed with a scattering of oil droplets.
Adding one more person to the meal wasn’t a problem; it simply meant one less mouthful each to make up an extra bowl for one more. If still hungry, one could eat an extra bun. However, with Yan Fei bringing a whole roast chicken and a sliced pig’s ear, it was more than enough for their family of three, which included a little girl.
The little girl probably thought Yan Fei was being rather cheeky for inviting himself over for a meal, but seeing what Yan Fei had brought, she had no complaints—these were treats she rarely enjoyed. Though people would sometimes take Mayor Chen out to eat, she didn’t have that privilege.
As for Yan Fei’s former teacher, they were much more polite. They couldn’t avoid saying, "You just show up like this and even bring things with you..."
After the pleasantries, Yan Fei got down to business while sipping his meal, not adhering to the rule of ’don’t talk while eating.’ If there was something to discuss, it wouldn’t interfere with eating, "I’ve got some spare cash now and I’m planning to distribute another batch of cattle, about two hundred households to start with, two for each. How about doing it for the National Day holiday to add to the festivities?"
Upon hearing this, Mayor Chen knew right away, "That’s a wonderful thing! Are you planning to let the township government handle the list again?"
Scheduling the distribution for the National Day holiday, although Yan Fei was providing the funds, the township was supplying the list. They would also send people to assist with the cattle distribution, showing support for a local enterprise. If executed well, it could make the news in the city’s newspapers, good news for everyone.
There were plenty of advantages. With the township in control of the list, villages lagging in grain payments would have hope and added pressure to be more proactive. While it seemed the township’s revenues wouldn’t increase just yet, by next year, the households in difficulty wouldn’t fail to deliver their public grain quotas.
Yan Fei, too, would save himself some trouble. The list was in the hands of the township government, and through the village officials, they would all actively help keep an eye on those cattle-rearing households to prevent any mishaps.
Of course, that’s not how he put it. Yan Fei politely added, "You know I’m short on manpower! I could use a little help from the township..."
Mayor Chen immediately laughed, "So, you’ve learned to be polite now! How can you do this in front of your teacher?"
Yan Fei chuckled, "People change, you know!"
Both were decision-makers, and it was settled in just a couple of sentences. What remained was for Yan Fei to have the villagers prepare the calves, and for the township head to have the office workers prepare a list. Actually, a small township government has quite a few people on staff, and those who sit in the office aren’t busy every day, so it was a good opportunity to give them something to do.
The next step was to make small talk. After finishing the meal, Yan Fei put down his bowl without any further pleasantries, "Well, I should head back to school. I’ve got classes in the afternoon!"
Saying this, he even felt a bit proud of himself. I’m going back to school!
As he reached the door and noticed Old Uncle Ding hadn’t left yet, Yan Fei didn’t forget to give him a bit of promotion, "Old Uncle Ding, I just had a meal at Mayor Chen’s place, and he was praising how delicious your food is."
This was pure fabrication, a way of paying back for the free Pig Tail he had enjoyed before. With just one sentence, Old Uncle Ding became so elated he seemed to gain energy from all around, standing there as if he had turned two years younger, smiling so hard he couldn’t even speak...
In reality, Yan Fei wasn’t in a hurry to go back to school after returning home. He had plenty of time at noon, no need to rush! Lying on the squeaky wooden bed he slept in as a child, he began to focus on that white dinosaur in the dinosaur world.
The pure white dinosaur had arrived at the seashore and was now lying on the ice, unfazed by the cold, with its mouth dipped in the seawater, motionless like a puppet. At this moment, the advantage of its coloration became apparent. With some snow on the ice near the shore and various snow mounds and ice blocks around, when it stayed absolutely still, its massive body seemed to be invisible, indistinguishable if one didn’t look carefully.
Where there was an ocean, there were creatures. In the cold waters beneath the ice, many oddly shaped small creatures were not in short supply. However, these small beings were not this large monster’s prey. It had a lot of patience and had been lying there for half the afternoon, without showing any sign of hunting.
As the temperature had risen slightly, Yan Fei observed some other dinosaurs in different places. Those were quite small and seemed to be adept swimmers, diving into the water like ducks from time to time to hunt for small marine creatures.
Yan Fei was about to annihilate a small dinosaur to experience how these little guys hunted in the sea when the big white dinosaur suddenly moved.
The body that had been still suddenly dashed into the sea, and as it submerged, its tail, which was longer and thicker than that of other dinosaurs, swung powerfully, much like a boat paddle, increasing its speed once again.
A moment later, a patch of red bloomed in the water, indicating that the white dinosaur, when it acted, made a successful catch.
Then it leisurely emerged from the sea with a plump fish that was six to seven meters long hanging from its mouth, thrashing its tail in a last desperate struggle.
While the white dinosaur was nimble diving into the water, it wasn’t as quick coming out, especially with such a big fish in its mouth. First, it shot up, clawing onto the ice with its forelimbs; then, with a powerful push from its tail and stout hind legs, it slowly climbed back onto the ice.
After that, it didn’t rush to eat but rather strutted with the large fish in its mouth to a spot a bit further from the seashore, where it finally began to tear at and devour the fish.
Suddenly, a short cry from a small dinosaur pierced the air nearby – a very abrupt scream, clearly a death cry. When Yan Fei looked over, he saw a Kronosaurus contentedly biting into a small dinosaur, slowly sinking beneath the water’s surface.
As the Kronosaurus dived down, the water gradually calmed, but the lingering tinge of red on the surface was a testimony to Yan Fei: the Arctic was not the barren wasteland he had imagined. Just within this one day, the variety of dinosaurs he had seen, and the small creatures in the ocean that served as their food, were clearly telling him that this place was brimming with life!
