Chapter 832: Chapter 456: Polar Dinosaurs
After some picky selection, Yan Fei chose a spot in the middle of a snowy landscape, which surely must be cold enough. By what might be more aptly called an ice mound or a snow mound, Yan Fei decided on a location, cleared away the powdery snow on top, and then started construction.
He picked out suitable blocks of ice directly from the sea and stood them upright on the snowy ground, using two blocks instead of one when necessary to prevent them from toppling over. After all, the materials were everywhere and available in every shape and size desired.
Building a house this way was really too simple; the ’walls’ were finished in no time. They were just barely propped up and not very solid yet, so he needed to continue pouring water to freeze them into place.
Almost as soon as the water was applied, it could be seen freezing rapidly. If it weren’t for the large build area, he probably wouldn’t have had to wait to add the ’roof’ right away.
The roof was also simple: just place a huge block of ice on top, and there was a natural cold storage room.
However, when placing it, he leveled the ’walls’ by smashing them down to a uniform height, causing a thunderous crash that even shook the nearby snow mound. Fortunately, the ice block was thick enough to withstand the impact without any problems, almost like a small iceberg.
All that remained was to pour water. After pouring for a while, the water would freeze before it ever had a chance to run down onto the snowy ground, and it had to be poured all around. After watering for a bit, he prepared to sleep. Dawn was near, and without some rest, he wouldn’t have energy during the day. Today he was in a good mood; moreover, he had promised his wife yesterday that he would still go to school.
Lying in bed, Yan Fei could still smell the fragrance of a girl’s hair. He turned over, putting his arms in a hugging position, as if by doing so he could really hold his wife. After going through the motion a few times and finding it pointless, he chuckled, snuggled closer to the bed’s edge, and lay down in the spot where the girl had been.
It seemed like the bed was perfumed with the girl’s scent...
So beautiful...
Before closing his eyes, he took another look at the ice house he had just built.
At that glance, Yan Fei instantly pulled his gaze back and then abruptly sat up.
What did I just see?
It wasn’t that Yan Fei was prone to overreacting; he was truly astonished. It seemed to him that the ’snow mound’ next to his ice storehouse had stood up...
After steadying his mind, Yan Fei looked again, and this time he was certain that he hadn’t been seeing things.
The ’snow mound’ had truly risen, then shook its head and swished its tail, vigorously shaking its body until the ice and snow flew everywhere, blocking Yan Fei’s view.
At that moment, there wasn’t much wind in the polar region, and the blizzard lingered, so Yan Fei could only wait for the creature to come out on its own.
Indeed, after shedding the snow and ice debris from its body, the monster slowly emerged from its abode. A long alligator-like snout was followed by a neck almost as long as the mouth; then came an increasingly massive body.
It looked a bit like a Baryonyx, almost the same in appearance, but once its tail also came into view, Yan Fei realized that this creature’s tail appeared longer and more robust than the rest of its body.
This dinosaur, besides its tail, looked similar to a Baryonyx, but it was much larger. If its tail was included, it probably was significantly bigger than the largest Female Spinosaurus Yan Fei had ever seen.
This peculiar polar dinosaur, bristling with fierce teeth and with forelimbs like those of a Baryonyx, should have appeared ferocious. However, it was covered completely with a layer of fluffy down that was not short, resembling the fluff of freshly hatched chicks and denser than the feathers found on most other dinosaurs.
If other dinosaurs were feathered, the colors were generally messy to aid in camouflage, only making them look more frightful. However, the downy coat of this creature was pure as snow, making it look rather sacred in this world blanketed by ice and snow.
And that was not all: though its body was snow-white, all four paws were black at the joints. The head had less down, and the exposed patches were mostly near-white or yellowish, along with the unusually small eyes compared to the head. Combined with its giant size, it looked remarkably strange.
After the White Thorn Dragon stepped out of the snow fog, it turned back to look at the ice room Yan Fei had labored on all night. Its small eyes blinked a few times, probably finding it strange that a big chunk of ice had suddenly appeared here. But quickly, it turned its head back and looked toward the direction of the sea, then began to stride that way.
Its long and heavy tail dragged across the ice and snow, swinging unconsciously from side to side as it moved.
As a result, when it passed by, the big broom-like tail swept away even its footsteps, leaving only a shallow trace behind. With a gust of wind carrying flecks of snow, no sign would be left here.
Yan Fei’s exploration range in this region was not extensive, so he had not encountered similar dinosaurs in other areas. This all-white dinosaur lumbered along, appearing leisurely but moving swiftly due to its massive size.
Watching the pure white dinosaur walk through the icy, snowy landscape, Yan Fei couldn’t help feeling this was unscientific...
It was normal for Yan Fei to find dinosaurs in the sea, but in this frozen snow-covered world, how did this creature hunt? Was it going to the sea to hunt?
If this dinosaur had appeared a bit further south, Yan Fei wouldn’t have been surprised. Because when he looked further south, areas he had flown over at night without noticing now also had dinosaurs searching for food.
Although it was still a world of ice and snow, there were green plants on the ground that peeked out in many places. A group of Swollen Nose Dragons was leisurely searching for suitable food on the ground, and sometimes they would even scrape away the ice and snow to nibble on the plants beneath.
The Swollen Nose Dragons were by no means small; these creatures resembled wild boars in build, but were much larger than them. Measuring seven to eight meters in length and weighing about four to five tons, they had bony shields and bone spikes on their heads, and their mouths were similar to those of Protoceratops.
Of course, due to the scarcity of food here, and given their large size, there weren’t many in this community of Swollen Nose Dragons—just a family of a dozen or so. And where there were Swollen Nose Dragons, there were naturally other dinosaurs too, it’s just that it was still early, and Yan Fei hadn’t seen any yet.
During the moment Yan Fei was distracted by the Swollen Nose Dragons, the white giant Baryonyx-like dinosaur had already covered quite a distance, although it was clear that reaching the seaside would still take half a day’s walk.
Yan Fei checked the time and, seeing it wasn’t too late, quickly transformed into Xiaohei and flew a super large loop in the direction the white dinosaur was headed.
This was to avoid the dinosaur wandering off to where it couldn’t be seen during the day; now that such a strange dino had been spotted in such a vast area, it warranted a thorough investigation of how it managed to survive here.
Does this make one a dinosaur expert? I wonder if this could be considered a new paleontological discovery?
Thinking this, dinosaur expert student Yan Fei suddenly realized that he had been delayed for so long, and if he didn’t get to school now, he would miss the first lesson of the morning!
Good Morning...
Accompanying the greeting of a young female teacher, the temporarily appointed class president immediately cooperated by shouting "Stand Up," after which the entire class stood up, and about a hundred students replied with a somewhat uncoordinated "Good Morning" in return.
Then, with a collective "Sit Down," the second English lesson of the morning began.
Yan Fei, half-heartedly flipping open his English textbook, continued to intermittently observe the white dinosaur. Unfortunately, up to now, the creature still trudged along in the icy landscape, like an indefatigable traveler, ever walking on...
It seemed like the kind of scene that martial arts TV shows loved to capture: a swordsman in stark white robes, coolly walking through a world of ice and snow, as if he were the only person in the universe.
Yan Fei couldn’t help but wonder, didn’t those swordsmen in the TV shows need to eat? Those carrying small bundles at least seemed plausible, with shots of them taking provisions from their packs. But what about those who traveled the world with their swords alone—did they, like Yan Fei, carry a space with everything they needed to eat, wear, and use? Or when they got thirsty or hungry, did they just take a couple of bites from their sword hilt?
And that didn’t make sense either—they’d still need at least two sets of clothes to change into, right? Or perhaps the clothes of heroes needn’t ever be changed...
It wasn’t that Yan Fei enjoyed letting his mind wander; it was just that the English class was dreadfully dull. The teacher would simply read the text once, and then proceed to bore the class with grammar, phonetics, subject-predicate structures, and the like.
Worse yet, while other students could whisper quietly to their desk mates, Yan Fei was out of luck. As the only student in the class with a female desk mate, who focused so intently on her studies as if she were discovering something novel in the textbook, avidly making annotations, her earnestness made him truly hesitant to interrupt.
This girl was quite something, the temporary English class representative, relegated only to the back row because of her tall stature. Her looks were not bad either, but for Yanfei, who found only his own wife attractive, all other girls were the same. Even though this girl’s long lashes would flicker above her big watery eyes with concentration, enticing the boys from across the corridor to steal glances this way...
Oh yes, she was also especially shy.
When Yan Fei occasionally glanced at her, the girl’s face would flush slightly, even though she was seriously studying. So, Yan Fei simply tilted his stool to sit back down in the corner, and began flipping through his English textbook page by page.
That was Yan Fei’s way of studying, learning from the textbooks whenever the urge struck him. As for pronunciation and such, after Miss Xu Xiaoyan’s urgent crash course over the summer break, he had learned to guess how English words were pronounced.
After class, instead of heading out for the broadcast exercises, Yan Fei hid in the classroom, pretending to be unaware of the need to go outside. Despite his classmates standing right outside the classroom, swinging their arms in unison with the blaring loudspeakers...
The third and fourth periods were for composition class, taught by a young, slightly chubby female teacher with big eyes. She got straight to the point by assigning a writing topic instructing everyone to describe a familiar animal.
Yan Fei had just noticed the White Thorn Dragon nearing the seaside, but as the teacher paced up and down the corridor, checking to see if everyone was writing, all the students took the first composition assignment since the start of the term seriously. Those who could write wracked their brains, wanting to impress the teacher with a standout essay, while the study slackers pretended to focus, chewing cap after cap into tooth-marked oblivion...
As a student, one must write compositions.
Yan Fei, eager to finish and return to dinosaur watching, started writing without much thought, "The animal I am most familiar with—dinosaurs."
High school compositions had a word limit, just a few hundred words, so it was impossible to write much. Yan Fei had initially wanted to write about the Tyrannosaurus, but when he glanced at the dinosaur world, he spotted a family of Suchomimus hunting by the river; he decided to write about them instead.
Actually, a few hundred words were really easy to meet; he described the appearance of the Suchomimus, such as the oddly comical feathers on their bodies. He then wrote about the lifestyle of the Suchomimuses he usually observed, and ended with a brief description of how they hunted. Yan Fei found that the word count of his composition had already exceeded the requirement.
That’ll do!
