Chapter 812: Chapter 441 Professor Qi Senior Brother Liu
"Hehe, Xiao Fei is here!" Professor Qi always greets with this one line, never bothering with any more pleasantries.
Yan Fei smiled as he placed the things he had brought inside the room. Today, aside from the usual trio of alcohol, tea leaves, and honey, there was also some beef. Professor Qi knew that all of these were genuinely Yanfei’s ’local specialties.’ Yan Fei, already feeling quite at home, chatted away as he took the beef into the kitchen.
Only after putting away the beef did he express his surprise, "Professor Qi, how come the housekeeper isn’t here today?"
Professor Qi chuckled, "School hasn’t started yet, and I don’t have much else to do right now, I can cook for myself, and all my neighbors are familiar faces. So I let her go back first, she’ll come over again when it gets busy after school starts."
"Then I’ll cook in a bit. You don’t have a problem with eating a little beef, do you? We’ll go to the wet market later and buy some vegetables." Yan Fei had already noticed the lack of vegetables in the kitchen. It seemed that even with his academician title, Professor Qi hadn’t planned on improving his living conditions, still living in the same old way. Even his clothes looked like they had been worn for years, similar to those he wore when Yan Fei, as a student, first brought a girl to school.
"No need, no need, please have a seat! Just now, a neighbor went to buy vegetables, and I had them bring back some for me." Professor Qi suddenly remembered to offer seats.
Miss Xu Xiaoyan didn’t bother sitting down; as soon as she arrived, she took over like a waitress, picking up the kettle to pour water. But finding the kettle too light, she was about to open it when Professor Qi seemed a tad embarrassed, "I don’t drink much water, and I haven’t gotten around to boiling any today."
The girl was brisk and efficient, setting down the kettle and heading to the kitchen, "I’ll go boil some water."
Yan Fei smiled, "It’s fine, we’re not thirsty. We just had a meal on the way here. You know, our house has been vacant all summer, and now it’s ready for people to move in. Why don’t you just move over, Professor Qi?"
Though Professor Qi looked to be in good health, he was, after all, someone who had been through tough times. Who knew when his health might fail? Living alone as an elderly man, already devoid of energy, without someone to look after him, would certainly be inconvenient—Yan Fei felt in his heart that it was still better to have a familiar person around than a housekeeper who came and went as she pleased.
Plus, Yan Fei had his own little selfish motive. After all, living with an academician, which sounded even more prestigious than a professor, could attract more people to visit his house and add a bit more liveliness.
Of course, he also felt more at ease with the girl staying there.
Liveliness might seem like some abstruse concept, but in practice, it’s pretty straightforward. Some things wear out faster the more they are used, but a house that’s lived in and tended to daily is likely to deteriorate more slowly than one that’s uninhabited.
"No need, no need, I’m quite comfortable here," Professor Qi declined."If it had been before, it might have been fine, but now with this title, it’s actually less convenient. I like your house; I’ll just stay for a few days when you’re there. By the way, how’s your own business doing? I heard your venture is growing bigger and bigger."
Yan Fei thought of what he had seen and heard in Hong Kong and felt that his little business was hardly worth bragging about, "It’s so-so. It does alright locally, but anywhere else, it’s just a small cattle farm."
"The size of the business doesn’t matter, as long as it benefits the local community, it’s a good thing. You shouldn’t forget about your studies now that you have money, you’re still young, and it’s always good to learn more," Professor Qi almost instinctively ’reminded’ him.
"I’ve learned. I even picked up Japanese this summer. Considering that Japanese beef is famous, maybe I’ll go learn some of their techniques someday and expand my little cattle farm a bit," Yan Fei quickly boasted about his ’achievement’ this summer.
"You learned it in just one summer?" Professor Qi was somewhat surprised.
Yan Fei immediately showed off a few sentences in Japanese, leaving Professor Qi somewhat dumbstruck, "Although I’m not proficient in Japanese, I can tell that your pronunciation is very standard. You must have put in some serious effort."
Miss Xu Xiaoyan came out and saw Yan Fei looking rather smug and spilled the beans, "Professor Qi, don’t praise him too much. He neglects all his other classes and only studies something when he needs it. God knows what got into him this summer to suddenly learn a foreign language. After finishing his Japanese studies, he doesn’t want to study anymore, and now he’s even neglecting his English classes that he needs for school..."
Professor Qi was quite indulgent towards Yan Fei, "Being able to learn something when needed, and learning it well, that’s also learning. Plus, it shows his strong learning ability! Purpose-driven learning might be a bit utilitarian, but as long as it leads to actual learning, that’s good."
Yan Fei immediately beamed with vanity and was about to speak when he suddenly laughed, "Professor He and Grandma He are coming over..."
With that, he went to open the door and stood waiting for a moment, soon seeing Professor He arriving with Grandma He, carrying quite a few vegetables. Professor He challenged him as soon as he saw him, "I figured there wouldn’t even be any vegetables here since you two haven’t shown up for so long. I thought you wouldn’t even get a meal here. That’d be embarrassing for us teachers from the Agricultural University..."
Yan Fei laughed heartily, "I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come! Come in, Grandma He, have a seat!"
When he and Xu Xiaoyan had arrived earlier, they’d first stopped by Professor He’s house. At that time, he discussed coming over together with Professor He, who insisted he had suggested to Professor Qi several times that Professor Qi should come to his place for a meal, but Professor Qi never did, so he firmly refused to come over—Yan Fei didn’t believe himself that important; Professor He was just acting like a petulant child, seemingly puffing up in anger at the time, but ultimately worried about his old friend and looking for an excuse to show up.
