Chapter 682: Chapter 330 Our Secret Weapon_1
In the morning, Yan Fei had finished his meeting with the ranch, and in the afternoon he had a whispered discussion with Xu Xiaoyan and Xiang Rui. After that, he discussed reception work with the locals who had come to check out the situation.
Regardless, even if he was reluctant, after all, among the visitors were representatives from the investment department of the city, along with some from the county. It was just a meal, and they were all local people. Without any conflicts of interest, it wasn’t worth offending them over small issues.
Yan Fei had agreed to hand over the reception duties to the local village folks. He now understood that this was a win-win situation. The locals were also keen to take this opportunity to build good relationships with the city and county representatives, especially those from the Investment Promotion Office who were welcomed everywhere. After all, normally, it would be difficult to get them to visit a place like Sancha River!
This time, the city didn’t just send two cars. A line of cars arrived, making passersby gape at the sight. The sound of firecrackers, which were the only thing Yan Fei had spent money on, rang out for a while. He didn’t have to arrange anything else, so he bought a little extra firecrackers.
Yan Fei couldn’t be bothered to remember the name of the representative from the island country who had come for investment. Anyway, the representative had a grand air, bringing along a translator secretary, bodyguards, and a few people who looked like professionals. With the people from the Investment Promotion Office, more than a dozen people arrived all at once, and the county certainly sent some accompanying personnel as well. This was quite a crowd.
Although the ranch had handed over the reception work to the locals, it couldn’t possibly do nothing. This left Heizi, Yan Fei, and Zhang Hui as the only three on their side. Yan Fei had told the rest of them to go to the construction team, to avoid a repeat of last time when people had come to ask them for information. Experience is gradually accumulated, and this time they simply didn’t give the other party an opportunity to probe, which made things easier.
Heizi was responsible for explaining, while other guests were accompanied by all sorts of officers from the village.
Apart from Mayor Chen, the people in Sancha River didn’t know the situation, and they didn’t know that Yan Fei had no intention of accepting this investment which was fraught with ulterior motives. But this was just fine, as their enthusiastic attitudes couldn’t be faulted, leaving the visitors with nothing to say.
As Yan Fei walked around, he was thankful that they didn’t know. If they were all like the ranch people, it would be a disaster. The ranch workers who were working at the construction site in the distance occasionally glanced over, their eyes full of disdain. This made Yan Fei resolved not to tell these guys anything next time. They couldn’t even handle the surface work properly, knowing more would only expose them.
The scene was quite lively. After Yan Fei had figured out the identities of the visitors, he kept silent and never initiated conversation unless someone asked him something directly. Meanwhile, Heizi was rambling on about how the ranch was researching on feed combination and how they were self-learning to make silage feed based on scientific books.
Zhang Hui was also one of the ignorant ones. He was responsible for highly praising the disease prevention work at the ranch, different measures taken at different seasons, as well as the readiness of seasonal measures - such as a good supply of crushed tea leaves. He also took this opportunity to brag about the new cold-mating technology that had been introduced, even though the equipment had not yet been installed.
The people from the Investment Promotion Office were nodding their heads as they listened. Neither the locals nor the county office staff had much research on professional cattle feeding, and there were always more people who didn’t understand than those who did. Therefore, they all thought the ranch was good, as there was a lot they had never heard before.
Even those who knew something about it were impressed by the equipment at the ranch in terms of their small-town experience.
As for those who had come to invest, a few of them were probably professionals. They listened to the translator jabbering on, and their expressions showed a hint of uncontrollable embarrassment.
What Zhang Hui said was relatively restrained, but Heizi just ran his mouth off. Seeing people nodding in agreement, he spoke more and more passionately.
Of course, no one would let Heizi have a one-man show. Taking advantage of the break while Heizi was talking, someone from the Investment Promotion Office asked, "Now that you have more and more cattle here, you have to be careful with the manure disposal. Isn’t it pollution if there’s too much of it? And you’re right next to the river; I saw some pollution when I came."
Upon hearing this, Heizi perked up. Isn’t it boring to boast without any audience? You need someone to play along even in a comedy!
"The river is not polluted by us, but by a paper factory upstream in the county. Fortunately, I heard that the factory is shut down. The water used to be black, but now it’s much better. Considering our ranch’s location, even if we pollute, we can’t possibly pollute upstream, can we?"
Heizi’s words were rather direct, leaving the young man who thought he knew what he was talking about looking quite embarrassed. After all, the ranch was downstream of the river, and even if there was pollution, it couldn’t possibly flow upstream, right?
Before he could finish his sentence about how they shouldn’t pollute downstream either, Heizi had already started talking again, "Speaking of manure treatment, our ranch is definitely the best in the county. I tell you, this is our ranch’s secret weapon."
As soon as the word ’secret’ was mentioned, the crowd perked up, each with their own thoughts, all ears.
Heizi continued, "Our Boss Yan went to the provincial city specifically to learn a new technology for manure treatment. Do you know what it is?"
Japan, though small, is extremely conscientious about environmental protection, so they were all ears, eager to hear what this secret weapon was.
Once Heizi had everyone on edge, he began boasting triumphantly: "This secret weapon is nothing other than common earthworms. Our Boss Yan has specifically gone to the Provincial City to learn this technology of breeding them using cow dung. These earthworms can not only be used as feed but as medicinal ingredients also. Very useful indeed!"
A few people from the City Investment Promotion Office had never heard of earthworm cultivation and immediately started asking about the details. Seeing Yan Fei nodding his encouragement, Heizi started bragging.
The way he went on, others were left in startled awe. According to him, these earthworms were divine creatures. Once bred, getting rich was the least of it; they were great for the environment and for the people. With these, he claimed, surpassing England and even America was a sure thing.
In summary, the earthworm breeding technology at the ranch was apparently the most advanced in the county, even across the whole region.
Listening to Heizi going on about how advanced his earthworm technology was made everyone nod in agreement, except for the Japanese who looked quite uncomfortable.
Such a secret weapon left them lost for words, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
What most people didn’t know was that the Japanese had been breeding earthworms on a large scale since the 1970s. More importantly, the variety of earthworms being bred in China, which is the most widely promoted at the moment, was actually introduced from Japan.
You had to admit, at this moment, the proverb "in ignorance lies fearlessness" seemed distinctly tailored for Heizi.
The so-called advanced techniques he was boasting about were full of holes and couldn’t stand scrutiny in the eyes of those Japanese experts. Yet he was totally oblivious, with a few non-experts fanning his flames, making it look like his earthworm breeding technique was the best in the world.
The truth was, not just earthworm cultivation but even when it came to breeding cattle, Japanese beef has a world-renowned reputation. Here was Heizi, knowingly bragging about his ’advanced techniques’ for fattening beef cattle in front of these Japanese experts, which was undoubtedly why those experts seemed embarrassed, and some of them had even dozed off.
It was like a veteran driver watching a novice who’d just passed his test bragging about managing to hit a speed of sixty––all while trying to hide their disdain. It was quite an awkward situation.
Even Yan Fei, who was relatively familiar with the situation, was feeling a bit awkward. After all, on his ranch, aside from his ’secret formula feed’, by any other standard they were pretty much amateurs.
But he would certainly not stop Heizi from bragging. It was his idea in the first place, otherwise it would’ve been such a damp squib!
So sometimes being a bit ignorant wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Heizi spent the entire morning showing off, using all his skills gathered from brag sessions with his friends, filling the air with an extravagant array of his achievements.
Heizi always took his cues from Yan Fei. If Yan Fei thought he should brag, he would brag with enthusiasm, getting backup from the local county folks. As for the Japanese, knowing Yan Fei’s attitude, he didn’t pay any attention to their reactions.
When the tour reached the breeding bulls, the Japanese finally started taking things seriously. However, Heizi didn’t care whether they took him seriously or not. He started talking up how the ranch took great care of the cattle, and how they had bred them to become breeding bulls. He went into detail about Yan Fei’s technical skills, and how he was self-taught, and learned the art of evaluating cattle, and so on.
In the end, he even started showing off the cow-related proverbs he had learned, which left the translator uncomfortable––how was he supposed to translate these colloquial rural sayings!
Is it any wonder they say that spectators are always curious! The tour guests who weren’t experts paid keen attention to Heizi’s explanation, thinking the situation was excellent. No wonder there were overseas investments! They were genuinely advanced. How many enterprises actually actively address environmental pollution? They were clearly ahead of the curve, which was why they were attracting investments.
In any case, if you were to consider only the surface, everyone was quite satisfied with the tour.
It wasn’t until after the visit, when everyone returned to the township government and a dedicated office was assigned to the Japanese for a long discussion, that a so-called collaborative plan was presented.
The moment Yan Fei saw the proposal, he breathed a sigh of relief.
