Chapter 678: Chapter 326: The Storm Begins_1

"Don’t worry! Uncle Ming has done all the work for me. I don’t believe my building will collapse within two years!" Yan Fei casually remarked.

The girl didn’t say anything in response; they both began eating. After a while, they suddenly heard a burst of laughter behind them.

Then a woman’s angry voice came: "You guys are taking it too far with bullying..."

Immediately after, a young man’s playful voice floated over: "Look at what you’re saying, we’re just goofing around, having a little fun. Is that considered bullying? Come on, lad, say ’yellow weasel’ again for us..."

The girl turned around and saw on the stand where they served Hot and Spicy Soup - the place Yan Fei had just mentioned - a few young men were chuckling up a storm. Beside them, the soup stand owner’s son, who was clearing up dishes, had a vacant look on his face, clearly bewildered - his previous silly grin had vanished.

The woman who had yelled just now was the lady selling Hot and Spicy Soup, and she was glaring furiously at these young men and shouting, "It’s too much! You come to eat every day and say you’ll pay later, and we’ve never asked you for money. You refuse to pay for your meals, and you still torment us, is that fair?"

Saying this, she stepped forward, intending to pull aside her son who looked a bit flustered because she was so angry.

However, upon hearing her remark about not paying for meals, the young men got spiteful, and somebody immediately protested, "What do you mean we don’t pay for meals? We said we’d pay later, is that bullying?"

The other young men chimed in and accused the woman, claiming they had paid.

The woman protested loudly, "Apart from the five dollars you paid last year, who else has seen your money? Are you telling me you’ve only consumed five dollars worth of food these past few years? It’s been more than a year now, have you ever settled your accounts? Is there anyone as bad at repaying debts as you? Everyone’s watching, can you seriously say this isn’t bullying?"

A young man casually responded, "There’s nothing we’re afraid to say. If anyone says we’re bullying people, bring them forward."

Many of the people at the stand remained silent, a few older people tried to mediate, but their words were barely heard amidst the noise.

Meanwhile, beside the Hot and Spicy Soup pot, a middle-aged man who’d been squatting down washing dishes, kept his head down and scrubbed the dishes industriously without uttering a word.

Xu Xiaoyan glanced over, turned back to Yan Fei, who was eating Fried Dough Sticks, and said, "They are being really harsh, why doesn’t anyone intervene?"

"Who would intervene?" Yan Fei slurped the soup after a bite of the Fried Dough Stick and continued speaking while chewing. "They’re not even making a fuss, what can others do?"

Dissatisfied, Xu Xiaoyan looked at the middle-aged man who just finished washing the dishes, indignantly shook her head and said, "What a hopeless man, not uttering a word while his son is being mocked and his wife is arguing."

"His son is silly, and his wife is a woman. They’re just arguing, no one would actually throw a punch." Yan Fei saw it for what it was. "If he joined in, he’d have to face a beating!"

Before Xu Xiaoyan had even turned around, he had already seen the young men teasing the slow-witted man to say ’yellow weasel,’ his lisp, however, turned it into ’yellow weasel mother.’ The young men, not knowing how to hold themselves back, kept poking fun at him. This led to the woman selling food starting the heated argument.

Upon hearing what Yan Fei said, Miss Xu Xiaoyan was still upset, "Living so spinelessly, he might as well die. He’s targeted by others and doesn’t dare to say a word. Can you still call him a man? There are so many people just gawping, not a single one of them stands up to say something, why are people like this today?"

"Like what?" Yan Fei drank a mouthful of the Hot and Spicy Soup and continued, "Nobody speaks up for good reason. Some fear conflict, others resent their ability to make good money! Don’t get it, do you? It’s called ’Innocence has its harm’ . They don’t have any man in their house in charge of matters and still make so much money. Who wouldn’t be jealous? They don’t understand the principle of making money in proportion to one’s abilities. Isn’t it asking for trouble?"

Xu Xiaoyan grumbled, "Ah Yan Xiaofei, I didn’t realize you’re quite insightful? According to you, isn’t it good for them to make money? So making a lot of money is also a bad thing?"

Yan Fei wasn’t bothered by the girl’s sarcasm, "It is wrong to have the ability to make money but not the defense to protect your wealth! Take me for instance, if I didn’t know Kung Fu, do you think our cattle farming business would have prospered this much? Let’s put it this way, back then the Second Man of Si Family could have easily ruined my business! It’s like a child displaying gold in a crowded market, asking to be robbed, isn’t it?"

The girl felt sorry but decided to goad him, "Aren’t you just making snide comments? You know so much, but when you saw someone being bullied, why didn’t you say anything to help?"

"If it were someone else, I would have said something; but when it comes to them, I won’t," Yan Fei refuted. "They flaunt their lack of abilities, if they really have the means, why not find a wife for their son instead of offending others and pretending not to know. Do they think I’m a fool?"

Truth be told, Yan Fei understood more about the situation in the town than the girl. When he was a child, everyone thought he was foolish, and the adults never avoided him when speaking. He would squat on the street all day, listening to many things.

The man in that house selling Hot and Spicy Soup was a weakling; his son wasn’t any better. The whole family relied on the woman. The crux of the matter was they didn’t have any close relatives who could step forward in a crisis. If they didn’t have money, it would have been fine, but now that they had money, attracting people’s envy was inevitable.

Moreover, given their situation, they even spread rumors that they were willing to spend a lot of money to find a wife for their son, fueling further jealousy.

For Yan Fei, it was indeed a simple matter of just a sentence. But why should he interfere? Sure, that Granny Dazui had set things in motion, but this family definitely crossed a line too. They offended him and treated it like it was nothing. Even if Yan Fei were a forgiving person, he certainly wouldn’t go out of his way to mediate!

Upon seeing Yan Fei’s reaction, the girl had no solution. She wanted to intervene but was afraid that Yan Fei would be upset, so she ignored the fuss and silently continued eating.

Noticing the girl’s discomfort, Yan Fei laughed, "Those guys just verbally harass others to get free meals. They won’t escalate the situation to a point where their business will be affected. A few words of argument, and it’s over."

Indeed, Yan Fei was right. Those young men were merely ruffians, looking for free breakfast and a cheap thrill. They wouldn’t destroy someone’s business outright because then, who would provide them with free breakfast in the future?

Therefore, after a heated argument cooled down a bit and a few words of encouragement from the sideline, both parties agreed to a truce for the sake of their business.
