Chapter 625: Chapter 286: Six Six is Safe_1
Yan Fei preferred to venture into the woods looking for trees, not because he was reluctant to spend money.
The reason was these mountains, although not big, lacked proper roads. It would be troublesome to transport out the trees even with enough money under everyone’s gaze. Despite the tree’s small appearance, its thick trunk, along with the roots and some soil, would require several dozen people to carry. And even if there were people capable of carrying the trees, the surroundings were all woods - there was no way to transport them down the mountain.
Trees of such size were still rather plentiful in this large mountain. As he ventured further in, he indeed found quite a few more trees like this.
He started digging with a large iron shovel, and the process was simple. Experience was gradually accumulated—the more he dug, the more experienced he became. He dug a large circle around the base of the tree, then hollowed out the bottom, and easily transferred it to the dinosaur world with his hand.
Even with these efforts, by the time he dug up three trees, the sun was already leaning towards the west. There was originally another exceptionally large tree that he planned to dig last, but considering the late hour and the somewhat hollow trunk, he decided to abandon it.
Before he left, he flew around the area, making a note of the landscape—in case he needed trees like these in the future, it would save him time if he remembered the location.
He didn’t need to return in a circle like when he arrived. When he flew straight back towards his home, not long after, at the edge of a city, he discovered that the trees he had dug up were surprisingly abundant in the city.
If they were just planted that would have been fine, but the key point was that the trees there were just like the ones he had dug up, but obviously pruned. No matter how you looked at it, they were more attractive than the ones he had dug up. Driven by curiosity, he landed nearby and began to wander around.
Just as he started wandering, he saw a middle-aged man and shouted, "Uncle, can I come in to see the trees in your place?"
"Come and see! We plant these trees by the roadside for people to see, don’t we?" The middle-aged man replied in heavy-accented Mandarin with a big grin, "There’s a small path over there to enter... Ah... The young people are sharp..."
Before the man had finished, Yan Fei had jumped across the ditch and entered, "Hello, Uncle! Did you plant these trees? They look pretty good, and I have never seen them before. I was just passing by and thought they were quite interesting."
The middle-aged man didn’t take it to heart, probably because there were quite a few people like Yan Fei. He grinned, "Yes, I planted them, but they’re not mine - they are for the big boss. Feel free to go up there and see. The ones we plant near the road are neither big nor small. Inside here we have hundreds of years old trees, including small potted ones, which look definitely better than the ones you were looking at."
Yan Fei didn’t want to seem ungrateful before the enthusiastic man, so he pulled out a cigarette and handed it over. The middle-aged man looked around before accepting the cigarette with a smile, "We’re not supposed to smoke here, but it’s quiet in the afternoon, so a sneaky puff wouldn’t hurt..."
"Could I ask what the name of this tree is? I’ve never seen this kind of tree before. Today is the first time, so I couldn’t resist coming in for a look." Yan Fei asked while walking with the middle-aged man.
"From your accent, I can tell you’re not from around here. It’s not surprising that you’ve never seen it before, as this tree is only found in our region." The middle-aged man tried to speak slower, probably because he feared Yan Fei wouldn’t understand his strong accent. "We call it the Duijie Tree. See? Doesn’t it look like it grows upwards segment by segment? These older trees over here, you see, are also used as bonsai. A casual prune makes them look nice, don’t they?"
Surprisingly, although the trees looked a bit strange at first glance, they were calming once you inspect them more closely. Yan Fei, who didn’t particularly understand this aspect, found them comfortable to look at.
Seeing Yan Fei nod, the middle-aged man became more enthusiastic, "Each of these bonsai pots would cost dozens to hundreds. Though they don’t produce anything edible or drinkable, they are sold at ridiculous prices. The older trees are even more expensive, good ones can sell for thousands or tens of thousands. Mostly, only the government departments can afford them. Things that people didn’t want before have now become treasures. These small bonsais are treated like treasures by the big bosses who display them in their offices and homes. In the past, these trees in our mountains were used as firewood...."
Just as he was getting into the swing of his story, a young man with glasses suddenly appeared from the distance. Seeing the middle-aged man smoking, he scolded him, "We’ve told you not to smoke, yet you still do it. Do you not want your salary this month?"
The middle-aged man hurriedly stamped out the cigarette with an apologetic smile, "Manager Li, this man is here to buy trees..."
"He’s buying trees? Does he look like he can afford it? You lording around and bringing your relatives to play at the company is one thing, making excuses another. I noted your smoking - your next month’s wage will be docked twenty yuan. Remember, you’re here to plant trees. It’s not your concern to sell trees." Manager Li scolded ruthlessly. "Some trees have just been delivered that way. Make sure to take a few people and get them planted as soon as you can. Stop idly loitering here, go and work!"
Having reprimanded the middle-aged man, he turned to Yan Fei and said, "You better leave quickly, this is a company, not an amusement park. Stop coming here for fun when you’ve got nothing better to do!"
"My apologies, I will see him out now," the middle-aged man quickly apologized, then turned to Yan Fei and said, "Young fella, I’m sorry about this. You should leave through this side. There’s a small path that leads to the main road. In the future, if you want to watch, just go to the mountain top. There are plenty of trees there."
He then nodded and bowed to the young man with a smile. Grabbing Yan Fei, he started walking towards the other side.
"Hurry up and send him out. Then get back to work, and stop loitering around here. I will only deduct ten dollars from your pay this time. Remember not to randomly bring people around next time," the young man added from behind.
Yan Fei was really irritated. If he weren’t afraid of causing trouble for the middle-aged man, he would’ve punched that guy a couple of times before leaving.
After walking a few steps and seeing the small path, Yan Fei took out a pack of cigarettes and said to the middle-aged man, "I’m sorry, Uncle. I won’t cause you any more trouble. You can keep these offending cigarettes for yourself!"
The middle-aged man hastily declined, "No, no. That guy is the sibling of our boss, really powerful. He will deduct our wages at the smallest mistake. We’re used to it. Don’t blame yourself for this."
But Yan Fei’s strength overwhelmed him, and Yan forcibly stuffed the cigarettes into his pocket, "You better get back to work! The boss is watching you! Don’t give him any more reason to dock your wages."
The middle-aged man refused a couple more times, then with awkward laughter, pointed out the way for Yan, and quickly jogged back to call his team back to work.
When Yan Fei reached the intersection of the small path, he suddenly laughed. Glancing around to check nobody was looking, he chuckled coldly, "Humph... Duijie Trees... Well, I guess it’s time for some old-fashioned good luck charm."
Not long after, the middle-aged man, who was just deducted ten dollars, rushed out with a few others. After fruitlessly searching nearby, puzzled, he went to find Manager Li, "Manager Li, you said that some trees were coming. They haven’t arrived yet?"
Manager Li was instantly unhappy, "The trees were unloaded and put by the roadside. Can’t you see for yourselves? Do I need to babysit you for every little thing?"
The workers replied in unison, "There’s nothing there! We’ve looked around, there’s nothing near the path!"
Hearing this, Manager Li got furious and stomped out, "Are you guys blind? You can’t even see big trees right in front of you? All you know is to shirk work."
The woods were vast. As Manager Li walked and scolded, it took him about ten minutes to lead the workers to where the trees had been unloaded. He carelessly pointed ahead without looking, "Do you see it now? If you make any more excuses to slack off, forget about this month’s wage."
"Manager Li, there’s nothing...", a worker murmured.
"Nothing? Why’d I give you eyes? To eat with?" Manager Li retorted, taking a couple more steps to point again, but before he raised his hand, he was dumbstruck.
A moment later, he emitted a ghastly wail, "Where are the trees? The three trees that were just delivered? Three ancient trees! Could they have flown away?"
The irate wail echoed through the entire woods, startling a crow in a nearby tree. It squawked strangely and took flight. As the crow flew by, a dark object fell with a plop, landing on Manager Li’s head, interrupting his yelling.
He wiped his head with his hand, then shrieked once again, "Who? Who was it? Who threw dog shit at me? Show yourself!"
