Chapter 619: Chapter 280: Cattle Farm for the Old, Weak, Sick, Disabled, and Pregnant_1
"Are you interested in the job or not? When it comes to selling wine, there’re just a few types. All you need to do is remember the prices. You can just sit in that room without having to run around. Can you handle this sort of work?" Yan Fei ignored Heizi and asked the girl directly.
"Sure! Even though I’m high school educated, I’m still capable of doing the math. But..."
"That’s settled then. From now on, you’ll be selling the wine. You just said you’re a high school student, so you can help Aunt Yu Mei with anything that involves writing or calculations on the farm. You’ll be paid the same as your brother Heizi and the others. That’s settled," Yan Fei said definitively.
Yan Fei felt a bit frustrated as he said this. He thought about how even a high school student was rare among those who work seriously at the cow farm. Zhang Hui’s two interns are technical secondary school students, but unfortunately, they only work part-time. As for the rest of them...
He was on the cusp of earning one and a half million a month from his business. Well, no—now it was a company... His company was generating over a million a month, and all he had to show for it was a motley crew of misfits, whipper snappers, and ex-convicts. Now that a high school student had finally arrived—and not just one at that—it was not only a bunch of misfits at the farm, but a bunch of weak, sick, disabled, pregnant... He got depressed just thinking about it!
"I don’t need that much pay, just selling wine. You can give me whatever you think is fair." The girl looked a bit embarrassed after hearing what Yan Fei had said.
"Alright, we’ve settled it then. By the way, I still need to head over to the cattle farm and discuss something. Come with me and meet everyone on the way!" Yan Fei said, heading off to move his motorcycle.
Heizi always listened to Yan Fei. He knew that Yan Fei was impatient with chitchat. Seeing this, Heizi quietly pulled the girl who was still trying to speak, stopping her from babbling on.
Before leaving, Yan Fei called over to the workers, "Da Song, don’t work anymore. Can you cook? If not, see if any of you can. Make your own meals today! Just use whatever you want, don’t hold back. If you don’t eat those eggs, they’ll go bad. Feel free to eat. I need to go somewhere..."
"Don’t worry, Boss Yan. With your assurance, we won’t starve. You go on with your business..."
Back at the cow farm, Yan Fei gathered everyone and introduced the new girl to them. Actually, they all knew her -- the sister-in-law of the mute Heizi! Who didn’t know her?
It was just that the uncle who had just beaten his sister’s husband was still not in a good mood. The mute, who was incapable of hiding his emotions, stared at Heizi with eyes as large as a copper bell, bristling with anger. If it weren’t for Yan Fei being there, the mute would probably want to give him another beating.
Unfazed by the glare, Heizi approached with a thick face, ’explaining’ that he and the girl had agreed on everything. After using sign language for a while and with Xiao Rui also interpreting, the mute finally stopped glaring at him.
Yan Fei didn’t care about their affairs. Once he saw that everyone was present, he started speaking, "I’ve found a big transaction selling beef and so we need to buy more Fattened Cows for the farm. Three months from now, we should be able to slaughter three or four cows a day. Going by our current production rate, we’ll need around three to four hundred cows on the farm in the future. I reckon we’ll need to hire a few more people..."
"I think there’s no need to hire more people!" Old Ou interrupted just as Yan Fei was still speaking. "The amount of work on the farm at present is barely enough for us to handle. Even if there are more cows, it’s no big deal..."
"Yes!" Lin Yumei also joined in. "Initially, we had too many people and too few doing any actual strenuous work. Now that these new guys have joined, we can handle any type of work. Increasing the number of cows wouldn’t be an issue."
"It’s not just about rearing animals. When the time comes, and we’re slaughtering more cows, I reckon Old Gao and the mute would have their hands full just killing cows and portioning the beef all day. They basically will not have any time to do much else. But let’s not fuss about this for now. I am just planning ahead to avoid a chaotic situation when we are too busy. Let’s talk about the immediate issue!" Yan Fei stopped them from continuing. "Once the greenhouses are completed in the next two days, I plan to grow mushrooms. Once you finish your work here, you can go have a look and learn how to grow these things. I reckon this skill could be useful in the future."
"By the way, Brother Chao, where’s your wife? Haven’t asked what your sister-in-law does yet? If she’s free and wants to work here, it’s okay. She can help with anything." Yan Fei looked at Xiao Rui who was standing beside Heizi, and remembered Ma Chao’s wife.
"She’s not well-educated. She didn’t even finish junior high, let alone do any hard labour. What can she do here?" Ma Chao said with some embarrassment.
"She doesn’t need to do any heavy lifting here, having her help you with the winemaking is fine!" Yan Fei said indifferently. "If you worry about her and don’t want her to work, that’s fine. But if you think she has too much free time, you can have her come over. On ordinary days, she can help Aunt Yu Mei in the kitchen or help you monitor the winemaking process. That’s still work."
"I don’t... mind..." Ma Chao said embarrassedly.
"Ha Ha... When your sister-in-law comes, I will... Ouch! Why did you pinch me?" Heizi had barely laughed when the girl standing next to him pinched him.
He turned his head to complain, but quieted down when he saw the mute Uncle’s furious gaze. "Can’t I stop laughing?"
When Heizi stopped laughing, the rest of them burst into laughter. Lin Yumei said with a smile, "You’re about to be a father, and you are still so immature. You just wait and see if your child doesn’t turn out like you..."
At these words, Heizi’s face turned a shade darker. He probably envisioned what it would be like if he had a son who was as rowdy as he was.
After laughing at Heizi, Lin Yumei turned to Ma Chao and advised, "Ma, why are you being so courteous? You work at the farm every day and can’t see her. If she comes here, won’t the two of you be together all day? It’s been almost a year since your father died. You two should get on with your lives. Look at how proactive Heizi is..."
"What’s that got to do with him? What’s wrong with me being proactive..." Heizi grumbled from the side.
"I’ll go home and discuss it with her and see if she wants to come," Ma Chao said, slightly embarrassed.
"Okay, you can take your time discussing it at home," Yan Fei continued. "The same goes for all of you. If any of you gets a wife, she can also join us. Even if she can’t do hard work, she can do some light work. Either way, once she’s here, she’ll be paid."
It wasn’t that Yan Fei wanted to hire more women, but now that he was earning more, and the workload would be piling up, he thought these people who had been working with him deserved a pay raise. However, raising the wages too much might not be appropriate either. In a small, broken-down town like Sancha River, offering too high a salary would just be asking for trouble.
He might as well change the name of the game: whoever had a wife could bring her in to do some work and earn another salary. This way, even though they would be working less and earning less, they would certainly be better off than earning a single salary. And since he didn’t want some farm issues spreading outside, the young men, once they had a wife, would find it hard to keep secrets. So might as well let their wives come work. They’d be so busy every day, they wouldn’t have time to go around blurting things out.
Upon hearing of this benefit, Old Ou stayed calm while the younger guys became restless. Looking at their distracted expressions, it was apparent they were already thinking about getting a wife.
