Chapter 613: Chapter 275: Tracking Turmoil_1
After comforting the young woman, Yan Fei stepped out and looked out from the stair landing. There he saw the man leisurely smoking a cigarette. But his conversation was far from leisurely; Yan Fei overheard him asking the elder who ran the local store, "Are you sure that woman is a student from a nearby university?"
"Absolutely. The young woman is amiable typically, she doesn’t reside here at night, but instead rents a place here to cook and eat." The storekeeper, who spent his time inside every day within the small community, recognized the faces that came and went. He spoke with certainty, "Although, she did seem to take a break for some time, didn’t see her for a few days, she only came back yesterday."
After a moment’s thought, Yan Fei decided to stop listening and headed upstairs to inform the young woman, "Stay inside, I’ll go down and ask him what his deal is!"
"Just be calm, don’t start a fight! Report to the police once you’ve caught him..." she responded, her anxiety heightening.
"Rest assured! I know my limits!" Yan Fei responded as he grabbed his worn-out bag and headed out, deliberately locking the door behind him.
He hopped over the railing down to the floor below. A few jumps and he was down. Once outside, he headed straight towards the man who was still putting up a relaxed facade.
The man, spotting Yan Fei approaching, feigned ignorance and turned to the shopkeeper, saying with a smile, "This cigarette is good, get me another two packs! I am afraid of getting fakes..."
Before he could finish, Yan Fei had already approached him. Yan Fei kicked him into the wall, "You’re pretty bold, huh? Stalking us right up to our doorstep, and still in the mood to smoke!"
With that one leg against him, even a sea-god needle couldn’t compare. The man had no chance to fight back and kept spluttering out, "What are you doing? In broad daylight, you dare to hit people. Who’s stalking you? I live in this community too, just returned recently..."
While he was trying to escape, his stomach was pressed against the wall and, no matter how much he flailed, his arms could not reach Yan Fei.
Yan Fei picked up his phone and dialed, juggling between the call and addressing the stunned shopkeeper, "This guy isn’t good news, don’t let him fool you. My wife and I just withdrew some money from the bank, and this guy has been tailing us ever since. I’m going to call the police - that’s 110, right?"
As he was speaking, a police car raced in through the community entrance. One of the officers jumped out and drew his gun, bellowing, "Nobody moves!"
As the call connected, and the operator started asking him what was wrong, Yan Fei shouted into the phone, "I am at the Happy Road Community. Some guy was following us, I wanted to report, but the police are already here!"
Finishing his call, Yan Fei laughed and reassured the officer, "No need to be alarmed, I’ve already subdued the offender..."
Then he realized something was wrong - the gun was pointing at him. Incredulous, Yan Fei questioned, "I’m the one who reported, this is the stalker. Why are you pointing your gun at me?"
The officer, still keeping his gun trained on Yan Fei, retorted, "You’re the one we’re talking about. Let him go, put your hands up or I’ll shoot!"
"Are you out of your mind?" Having dealt with the police before and confident that he had done nothing wrong, Yan Fei didn’t get flustered. "This guy was stalking me. Didn’t you see that I was just calling the police..."
At this, the man pinned against the wall started regaining his senses and quickly interjected, "Hang on, everyone’s a bit on edge here. Buddy, you both don’t need to get heated up, seems like there might be a misunderstanding. Young man, could you let me go..."
This was when the shopkeeper also realized something, "This man you’re dealing with, he’s also a cop. A special armed one. He showed me his credential earlier."
"Also a cop?" Yan Fei was puzzled. "Why are you tailing us if you’re a cop?"
By now, the second cop, who was driving the car, had parked and rushed over, weapon drawn. He barked out the same warning, "Don’t move..."
Under the gaze of the two cops, both with their guns trained on him, Yan Fei was frustrated, "Are you really cops or are you pretending to be?"
Though he had already believed that they were indeed cops, he nonetheless released the one he was pinning as he asked, "Show me your credentials!"
The two cops kept their guns raised. In contrast, the cop that was previously pinned moved quickly to fish out his ID, holding it out to Yan Fei, "Look carefully, we are police!"
"Are these two your colleagues? Why were you tailing me?" Yan Fei asked and then impatiently addressed the other two officers. "Can both of you stop flashing your guns already? This is inside a community. You could just answer my questions, waving guns around isn’t necessary. Isn’t it annoying?"
One cop indignantly retorted, "We were about to question you! Now, hands on your head..."
Yan Fei couldn’t be bothered to deal with him anymore, so he turned to the cop who had just retreated backward and asked, "What are you tailing me for? Speak up quickly. Otherwise, I’m suspecting all three of you are fakes. Look, I am still on the line with the emergency service! I am reporting a case here!"
The undercover cop retreated beside the two armed cops, obviously more confident with a gun at each side, and responded, "Now, I’m the one asking the questions. You answer first. Is the money you just carried from the bank?"
"Yes! How do you know I was carrying money? What’s the problem? Is withdrawing money now illegal?"
"Your bag has a small rip. I saw it! Are you sure the money inside was legally withdrawn from your account? Do you have any proof?" The cop further questioned.
"Oh..." Yan Fei finally understood. "You saw me carrying money and suspected we were involved in some illegal activities, right? Ok, first you have to prove that you’re a genuine cop, and I’ll show you proof..."
The cop seems willing to cooperate, raising his ID again and asking, "Isn’t this proof enough?"
Then he turned to his colleagues, "Show him your badges, too!"
Yan Fei, sharp-eyed, glanced at the ID, sidled to the phone and shouted: "I’m the one who reported the case, I want to check if Chen Wudong with the badge number XXXXXX is indeed a police officer in our provincial city, thank you!"
The other end of the phone complied before he could finish, and whirring came another police car with another round of armed cops treating the situation as a battleground.
Understandably, they heard the chaos over the phone, so it would be strange if the operator didn’t react.
Seeing that the arriving cops were all taking the other side’s side, shouting at him, Yan Fei bluntly said to Officer Chen, "Alright, alright, order your men to holster their weapons! Come upstairs with me, I’ll show you..."
Ignoring the rushing cops completely, he turned to the old grocer and asked, "I don’t have to pay for the police call, right?"
The old man, his whole head shrunken upon seeing the police with guns drawn outside, only stuck his head out when he heard Yan Fei’s question: "No need for money, no need for money, if you haven’t done anything wrong, go prove it to them as soon as possible..."
There were still several cops trying to chase after and arrest him, but Officer Chen stopped them, and they all followed Yan Fei upstairs.
On the way up, Yan Fei grumbled: "You all came rushing here before you even knew what happened, it stirs up suspicion. How are we supposed to live here in the future?"
The rest was simple. The frightened Miss Xu Xiaoyan dug up her bankbook upon Yan Fei’s request, fumbled with her hands and feet to let them inspect it, and showed them the cash in the bag. With that, the matter was resolved.
The cops that followed were relieved, and Officer Chen waved the others downstairs first, leaving himself to formally apologize to Yan Fei. He was the most embarrassed one. Although it was his duty, he did cause significant trouble for them, so he left his pager number for the couple to contact him in case of trouble.
As soon as the cops left, Yan Fei looked at Xu Xiaoyan, who was still in shock, and suddenly burst into laughter: "I told you your sneaky demeanor when walking invited suspicion that we were up to no good. You really managed to summon the police..."
"Pfft! It’s your fault, okay? Couldn’t you find a decent bag to hold the money? If it weren’t for the small hole in it, would anyone have followed us?" Xu Xiaoyan pointed out and gradually couldn’t help but laugh. "You big fool, can’t you be more reliable? If there was a bigger hole in the bag, it would be hilarious if we left a trail of money on our way!"
Speechless, Yan Fei rummaged through and found a small tear at the bottom of the bag. It was really small; only someone who is normally vigilant, like a cop, would notice what was inside. Most people wouldn’t think it contained a bag of money by looking at his outfit and this bag.
The two of them laughed for quite a while before they started cooking dinner again.
After dinner, they rode the motorcycle to the Agricultural University while it was still dark, telling Professor Qi that all the procedures had been completed in the morning and the construction had started. Then, he sent her back to her dormitory and prepared to return to Sancha River.
Regardless of when he left the provincial city, the people in Sancha River would have no clue of it. He found a road that led to North Ring Road, saw no one in front or behind, and made a beeline with his motorbike for Dinosaur World.
When he came out, Xiaohei tweeted a couple of times and headed straight home.
About half an hour later, he nonchalantly emerged from a little path not far from the bamboo forest on his motorbike.
As soon as the motorbike reached the bamboo forest, Yan Fei saw Heizi running towards him with a cigarette in his mouth from a distance. His good eyes glimpsed a black and blue face and disheveled clothes on Heizi as he rode by, and he erupted, "Did you get into a fight? Did you lose?"
