Chapter 375: Chapter 86: More Cows Means More Greatness_1
Well, the yard was spacious enough since it was a family members’ yard, but it seemed quite difficult to find a decent spot to tie down the cows.
Luckily, these three men didn’t care much for rules. Having no appropriate place to tether the cows, they simply picked any spot and did so haphazardly.
Originally, their commotion attracted quite a crowd from both the upstairs and the downstairs. But now as the crowd watched them recklessly tie their cows, no one dared to rebuke them — such was the effect of Heizi’s previous boast.
Nowadays, it’s considered prudent to keep wealth discreet. If someone was ascribed a wealth of hundreds of thousands, they would be considered nouveau riche. But if it was in the millions, they wouldn’t be just a nouveau riche, but a major tycoon!
After finishing with the cows, Yan Fei and his compatriots saw Yanfei’s parents watching them from upstairs. Yanfei’s mom called out, "Come on up! We’ve finished eating. I’ll prepare your meals now. Did you really buy all these cows in one purchase?"
Heizi kept boasting, "Yes! Brother Fei wanted to buy even more, but there weren’t many good ones left at the Cattle Market, and we three couldn’t lead that many. I persuaded him to buy fewer cows first, but he wasn’t happy with that!"
Yan Chao had already started to shout from upstairs, "I want to ride the cows, I want to ride the cows!"
Heizi didn’t miss any opportunity to show off, "Xiaochao, come and play! I’ll let you ride the cows. Let’s head over to our cattle ranch later. There are far more cows there which are much bigger and impressive! You can ride whichever cow you like."
Yanfei’s mom shouted from above, pulling back Yan Chao, "Come on up! You’ve all been working all morning, let your brothers eat first."
Unable to bear it any longer, Yan Fei urged Heizi, "Just get on with it! Have you had enough with all that boasting?"
It was only then that Heizi chuckled and went upstairs.
When the three had gone upstairs and entered their rooms, the courtyard of the community got lively again.
Mostly, it was various comments of envy, jealousy, and resentment, "The Yan family’s boy really struck it rich! Hundreds of thousands! Who knows if we’ll ever see this much money in our lifetimes?"
Someone grumbled sarcastically, "Why couldn’t we? We make several hundred a month, that’s a few thousand a year. If we tighten our belts and save every penny for several decades, as long as we don’t drop dead from exhaustion, we will definitely save up a few hundred thousand..."
Those who heard just laughed. The idea of not eating or drinking for the sake of money was ridiculous. If you were set on that, you’d have to go to Yama to make those hundreds of thousands.
Others had doubt, "Didn’t they say that their youngest son was stupid? That the big city hospital had diagnosed him, and they even had to have a second child."
Another person added sarcastically, "Who knows if he’s really foolish or pretending to be? Maybe they just wanted a second child?"
"That’s not necessarily true!" Without Yan Fei in the conversation to defend himself, someone spoke up for him. "Haven’t you read those stories where foreigners were seen as dumb when they were kids, but turned out to be geniuses? They’re so intelligent that common people don’t understand them and mistake them for fools."
"Exactly." The facts spoke for themselves and the point of view was accepted by everyone. "The thoughts of a genius are nothing like ours. We see them as fools, but in reality, they see us as the fools!"
Finally, someone brought up the matter of Yanfei’s dad embezzling his wages, "Their family is so rich now, so why is his dad embezzling?"
Someone in the know laughed derisively, "Who said they were embezzling? They said it was an advance of wages for two months. It’s just that some people are jealous that he is getting promoted and are purposely spreading rumors. There are all types of people these days. Is Old Yan the kind of man who would embezzle?"
"Two months of wages, how much could that be? Does their family fall short of that amount?"
"Even if they have abundant money, it’s still their son’s earnings. Old Yan is a father who wants to rely on his own abilities to provide for his son’s marriage. What’s wrong with advancing a bit of wage? Many factory workers have done so, yet now everyone is making a fuss over this. How are people supposed to get their income advanced after this ordeal?"
Immediately, those who were still skeptical fell silent.
"Exactly. Didn’t you just hear what that guy said? Their cows are so expensive, they won’t even sell for 10,000 each. Do they care about the measly salary from our factory? Old Yan doesn’t know what he’s doing, though. His son’s money is still money! They’re all family, what’s the point in keeping things so separate?"
"Yeah, right! They’re all family, why separate everything so distinctly? If I had a son like that, why would I even go to work? I’d just take over as security, counting cows every day would be so much fun!"
The crowd laughed, "Keep dreaming! You wouldn’t be counting cows, you’d be counting money! Aren’t you afraid your hand would cramp from all that counting?"
"What’s there to be afraid of?" The man retorted. "Even if my fingers cramp up, I still have my toes! Anyway, the more cows we have, the richer we are. Whose business is it if I want to count my money?"
The crowd burst into laughter.
It’s evident that money has always been a temptation. Even though people despise the nouveau riche, when the wealth reaches a certain amount, the despise would eventually turn into a big, uppercase word of RESPECT.
"Yan Fei, Yan Fei, why are you daydreaming? I’m asking you a question. Won’t you eat? Your noodles are getting cold. What are you so engrossed in thinking about?" Yanfei’s mom’s annoyed voice rang in his ears and brought him back to reality.
"Oh, it’s nothing! Mom, your cooking skills are improving every day, these noodles are absolutely delicious!" Yan Fei had been intently listening to the people in the courtyard and was brought back by Yanfei’s mom’s voice. He quickly gave her a compliment.
"You naughty boy, since getting a wife you’ve become different, your words are getting sweeter by the day!" Yanfei’s mom, apparently delighted by the compliment, appeared to scold him but couldn’t hide her radiant smile.
Watching the three young men eat, Yanfei’s mom was joyful for quite some time before remembering to ask Yan Fei, "Yan Fei, I heard you guys shouting earlier about a cow costing 10,000, is that true?"
Yan Fei laughed, "Don’t listen to Heizi’s nonsense. The breeding bulls we have here don’t really cost 10,000."
After saying this, he thought for a while and came up with a new idea, "However, I do consider my breeding bulls to be worth that much. If someone offers me 10,000, I wouldn’t sell it. Later on, I should go and check out the Cattle Markets in other places to get an idea about the price of good breeding bulls. Who knows, it might really sell for over 10,000!"
Yanfei’s mom was astonished, "So, what they said about you having hundreds of thousands is true?"
"Where are there so many?" Yan Fei was quite clear about his cattle ranch. "Good breeding bulls only account for about ten, the rest are all young calves! What they said earlier was all boasting. The regular fattened cows aren’t worth much, even when they’re fully grown, they only fetch four to five thousand."
"That’s still quite a lot! How many cows do you have now?" Yanfei’s mom continued to ask in excitement. "Every day you have something new, we have no idea how many cows you have anymore. It seems when a son grows up, he no longer listens to his mother, your skills are certainly improving!"
