Chapter 331: Chapter 51 Money Really Does Fall from the Sky_1
Seeing the young man’s sudden change in face, Yan Fei wasn’t bothered, but Xu Xiaoyan started to feel nervous, gently gripping Yan Fei’s arm, afraid that the young man would cause trouble.
Fortunately, the young man was just regretful and continued to look down. After finishing, he picked up the knife coins he mentioned, completely disregarding their rusty condition, and began to sort and select.
Every once in a while, he picked up one that looked less rusty, looked at it closely, and his regret deepened.
Actually, Yan Fei wanted to wipe these coins clean when he was on Vegetable Garden Island last night. After all, he was selling them for money, and even he wasn’t too dim to know that making them look better could fetch a higher price. But when he didn’t clean nearly ten of them, two were accidentally broken by him - not from being too forceful, but because they were too rusty.
Xu Xiaoyan saw him going through the coins and couldn’t help asking him: "They are all rusty, does it still matter to separate them?"
The young man gritted his teeth: "Don’t ask, you will know after I sell these. If I hadn’t given you extra glances, I wouldn’t have taken only a dollar off the price. Even if I would ask for half of it as a fee from others, I would have earned double my salary this month."
He then turned to Yan Fei and said, "Bro, remember to come back to me once you get rich! I’m damned near bankruptcy today, why are you selling things with such a beautiful girlfriend? It’s like you’re setting a trap for me! If you had come alone, I’d have charged you three dollars just because I was in a good mood! Now, I’m at a total loss!"
He was rude when chatting with the girl just now, which annoyed Yan Fei. However, hearing his words now, and seeing the girl bursting into laughter, he decided not to fuss about it.
By the time the young man had separated the coins into piles, there were fewer people in the market.
However, while he’d been sorting, a few people had gathered around to watch him. Once he was done, an old man asked, "Xiao Wu, did you land another business? How are you selling these silver coins?"
The young man was obviously in a bad mood at this point, answering irritably, "You’ll know once you see. Look first, think about the price, and wait for my call!"
Hearing that he was going to call out, a middle-aged man chimed in: "We’ve been waiting here for a long time, and now you’re calling out? Isn’t that against the rules? At least let us take a look first!"
The young man dismissed him: "Just take a look at the goods. Do you think you guys can buy all of these?"
The old man was displeased: "Xiao Wu, you’ve got a bee in your bonnet today. Who are you trying to bite?"
The young man, looking annoyed, said, "if you’d lost a month’s salary just because you glanced at a girl more than you should, you’d be even worse!"
The old man took a look at Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan who were squatting down and seemed to understand something, murmuring: "Serves you right!"
The young man’s face darkened even more at this comment: "Hurry up, decide on whatever you like, I’m going to shout out prices in one minute!"
Despite his bad attitude, the others didn’t mind, they just bent over to look at a few silver coins, discussing quietly amongst themselves before someone handed one to the young man and offered a price.
When Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan heard this price, they were very pleased.
But the young man was still unhappy: "Whether it’s real or not, that’s not the point! It can’t be fake. Although these are not treasures, look at their condition. Don’t you think you should add ten or twenty dollars as a thank you for someone preserving these for so many years?"
Hearing this, the man hesitated, then said, "Fine, if you say add ten dollars, then add ten dollars."
Without forgetting the rules, the young man then turned to Yan Fei and asked, "Do you think this price is fair?"
The couple were satisfied with the offer and the extra ten dollars, so Yan Fei nodded affirmatively.
The young man took the money and handed it to Yan Fei, saying, "Keep this for the account, don’t shortchange me later!"
Yan Fei nodded and replied, "Don’t worry, my bag is empty. I’ll put it in it and we’ll count it all together later."
Xu Xiaoyan nodded in agreement.
Even though they had only competed one transaction, they both were really satisfied. Thinking about just that single transaction alone, if they had set the price themselves, the price would certainly be similar to the worn and tattered ones others were selling. They’d unquestionably make a loss then, not to mention taking into account the one dollar commission.
Afterwards, there were people who bought and some who didn’t, some people who set their own price and the young man did haggle a bit, but most of them agreed.
Originally, the young man said he would call out once they finished purchasing, but he never had the chance.
By this point, it was nearly the end of breakfast time, and the entire Antique City was gradually filling with people coming to open their shops. Most of those who passed by the young man knew him, and some came over to see what he was helping to sell this time.
Those silver coins were very well preserved. In the words of the young man, the quality of these items was such that if you spent ten dollars to take it, even if you sold it for twenty, no one would say you overpriced it.
There were people who wanted to buy it all, but the young man refused.
Yan Fei understood, those who wanted all of those were shop resellers, and they set the price at the point. The young man was selling them in retail, and those who buy are usually hobbyists, wanting to buy one or two for their own collection. The price is relatively higher, and sometimes even though they felt that the price was painful, they couldn’t bear to leave and ended up buying after hesitating a while.
Watching the young man and the crowd ’fight’ with their quick words, was really interesting! Anyway, Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan watched with great interest. Yan Fei sort of understood, this must be what they mean when they say ’different strokes for different folks’! As long as people liked it they would buy it, no reason needed.
The young man’s attitude was not very good, talking harshly as if everyone owed him money, yet these people liked that, each of them arguing and complaining while picking out items with smiles on their faces.
Someone said that the knife coin was rusted and broken, and the young man pursed his lips, "If these were in the same condition as the silver coins, I wouldn’t be selling this big pile here. If I just spread the news, there would be people lined up to take them!"
The most interesting part was when these people were looking at the knife coins, their cautious looks were as if they were holding a treasure. A few old men even looked at the broken fragments with regret—when Yan Fei received these things from the old vagrant, they were treated as scrap, non-recyclable stuff, who would care for them? Tossed around in a sack, it would be strange if they were in good condition!
By the time Yan Fei’s head was dizzy from nodding in agreement, all those garbage scraps had been sold, even the broken fragments that sold for a few cents each had buyers, really bizarre! Apparently, there were people who specialized in restoring these things, and even these could be repaired after taken home.
Finally, what left in the snake skin bag were just a bunch of copper rust, and a few items that were rusted to the point of basically being rubbish.
At this moment, Xu Xiaoyan was dumbfounded and muttered to herself, "So not only does it rain money from the sky, but it actually snows it too!"
Wasn’t this just like money falling from the sky?
Yan Fei and the young man were counting the money together, and before they were finished, Yan Fei directly handed three banknotes to the young man, "Xiao Wu, right? No need to give change. Consider this management fees. Next time I come over, I’ll bring you a jar of my homemade medicinal wine. No need for more thank yous."
The young man, Xiao Wu, didn’t stand on ceremony, and although he still regretted not asking for a higher commission at the beginning, he took the money and nodded, "Alright bro, I’ll take your word for it. I’m looking forward to drinking your wine!"
As Yan Fei began to leave with Xu Xiaoyan, Xiao Wu advised them, "Once you leave here, keep an eye on your bag with the money. Across the road is a bank. Don’t rush, deposit the money first before you do anything else, remember. If anything happens at the entrance, just shout for help. There are patrols around and a police station nearby too!"
Although Yan Fei didn’t intend to deposit his money in a bank, and he didn’t need to worry about theft or robbery, he still nodded in thanks before he left with Xu Xiaoyan.
