Chapter 234: Chapter 94 Running A Mad Dash (Peaceful Christmas Eve!)"_1

"Yan Xiaofei, are you out of your mind..." Xu Xiaoyan glanced at the time before angrily shouting at Yan Fei.

"What’s wrong?" Yan Fei was puzzled.

"You had me get up early to eat, but it’s still dark now after we’ve eaten! I thought it was cloudy today. How can we find a vehicle for the zoo at this hour?"

"Oh, if we don’t have a vehicle, just don’t ride! Weren’t you complaining that taking the bus costs money? Let’s take a shortcut and deliver the ’notice’ to my grandfather on the way!" Yan Fei defended with a topoleon of course face.

"Are you used to taking shortcuts? To the city center? By foot? Do you know how far that is? Over sixty miles, how much can a shortcut shorten?" The girl now felt confused by him.

"Don’t worry about it, hurry up and see if anything needs packing." Yan Fei grabbed the ’envelope’ he prepared earlier, along with some firecrackers left from a festive banquet, and prepared to hit the road.

The girl casually straightened her clothes, thought for a moment, and changed into a pair of flat shoes. As she changed, she muttered to herself, glad that she didn’t wear a skirt in the morning. Once she had changed, she told Yan Fei, "Hmph, I’m ready."

"Why did you change into these shoes? Those sandals look so much better!" Yan Fei was confused.

"Duh, aren’t you asking me to walk? Walking in sandals for too long will hurt. Even with these on, I’m not sure if I can make it. And if I get tired, don’t complain that I’m heavy, you’ll have to carry me either way!"

"I said I’ll walk, I didn’t say you have to. Hurry up and change shoes! I’ll carry you." Yan Fei urged the girl. He murmured after finishing, "I just like looking at those sandals, otherwise I wouldn’t have seen your toenails that were dyed with henna!"

The girl blushes a little and mutters after changing into her sandals, "It’s really far away! Aren’t you afraid of getting tired?"

Yan Fei turns his back to the girl, "Don’t tell me you think I’ve never been to the city like you? You forgot where your big color TV you watch every day was bought."

"Hmm!" The girl nodded, extended her arms softly around his neck, and slowly rested on his back.

Yan Fei closed the door and kicked at the wagging dogs, "Get out of the way, don’t complicate things..."

The dogs were too servile. The more Yan Fei treated them this way, the more they clung to him. They took it as a game with Yan Fei, immediately retreating and huddling ready to pounce, eagerly barking at him.

"Don’t you want to leave a message to Aunt Yu Mei to take care of the liquor store this morning?" Xu Xiaoyan asked.

"No need. If they come by and don’t see us, they’ll take care of it themselves." Yan Fei replied as he shrugged, "Hold on tight!"

Without going through the main door, he headed straight towards the wall beside the road.

"Ah..." The girl didn’t manage to finish her sentence when she suddenly felt the guy carrying her take flight, quickly landing on top of the wall, then just as swiftly firmly landing at the side of the road.

Depressed barks came from behind the wall. The moment Yan Fei started running, the dogs joined in, but seeing Yan Fei leap over the wall, they could only protest from within the wall, lacking such ability.

The moment Yan Fei hit the ground, he began to sprint, the sound of his footfalls particularly far-reaching in the tranquil road of the early morning.

The girl on his back felt the bridges rapidly receding from their sides, followed by the trees along the road. Despite their extreme speed, she could hardly feel any bumpiness, just like when he jumped over the wall earlier.

She was already aware that this man carrying her couldn’t be judged by common sense, but the novelty and thrill of being carried while sprinting was surprising and exciting to the girl.

However, after a while, she started to wonder. It didn’t seem like he was exerting much effort, did it?

She couldn’t help but look back and saw dust rising behind them in the dim morning light. Despite the darkness, she wondered if he was leaving a trail of small holes in the highway.

With him really sprinting all the way, it was as if he was a mad bull or wild horse running across the open wilderness.

After the initial waves of emotions, the girl began reciting poetry. Resting on Yan Fei’s back she softly recited, "Galloping with the horsewhip in hand, in the mighty wind, I hear the sound of horse hooves. Traveling through the scenic views, neighing towards the sunset on the horizon, roaring with the majesty of history. This running wanderer, chasing after a lifetime of happiness and suffering, charging into the battle, stride confidently... Ah, why have we stopped?"

"We’re here!" Yan Fei put down the suddenly poetic girl and retorted grumpily, "I’m not a horse, neither am I a wanderer. I’m a man carrying his wife to visit a grave!"

"Ah..." The girl, who was still standing on the ground, was trying to regain feeling in her numb legs. She hadn’t quite caught on from her poetic imagination. When she heard him, she looked around and under the dim sky, weren’t those small hills all graves?

A gust of cold wind made the girl shivers uncontrollably, all her poetic feelings scattered to the winds.

Remembering Yan Fei’s talk about ghosts festival, the girl’s fertile imagination took off once again, Ghost Festival, the King of Hell opening the Ghost Gate, the Hundred Ghosts Parade at Night...

The girl abruptly darted to Yan Fei’s side, grabbing his arm indignantly. "Yan Xiaofei, couldn’t you have told me we were nearing?"

Yan Fei pulled out a match—yes, he still held the belief that all factory-made things were no good and was determined to stick to using traditional matches. As he was lighting the match and bringing it near the envelope, he casually replied, "Couldn’t you see it yourself?"

"Hmph!" The girl stomped her foot in irritation. Seeing that he was about to light the firecrackers, she quickly stopped him: "Wait, let me stand back first."

In saying so, she pushed aside her fear of ghosts, for compared to the imaginary specter, the power of the firecrackers was a more tangible threat.

With the crack of the firecrackers, Yan Fei walked back to her, bent down, and said, "Let’s go!"

"Aren’t you going to say something?" Xu Xiaoyan asked while obediently climbing onto his back.

"What is there to say? The sound of the firecracker speaks enough. Besides, I’ve heard that if a person is full of vitality, ghosts won’t even dare to approach. Standing here by the graves like this, I bet they wouldn’t even dare to approach for their letter!" Yan Fei responded while carrying the girl, then stepping forward.

Arriving at the rice paddy, he began to run at an accelerated pace.

It was only after they had run from the rice paddies to a small path that Xu Xiaoyan murmured, "Yan Xiaofei, who would’ve thought you’ve started considering others now!"

"I was considering the ghosts!" Yan Fei was clearly still hung up on the fact that the girl had treated him like a horse.

"Haha..." The girl laughed at his slightly bitter tone.

The reckless running continued, with the man carrying the girl, going through the fields and villages, on to the main roads—running nonstop.

The eastern horizon was becoming brighter, with a faint hint of red.

On this day, the odd sight of a man carrying a girl and running like the wind was witnessed by the early risers on the shortest route from Sancha River town to the city—an uncommon spectacle in their lives.

Some, thinking this could be a case of a girl being abducted, became alarmed until they noticed the giggling girl on the man’s back. With that, they merely exchanged knowing smiles and didn’t intervene.

As they passed through each village, startled dogs would try to chase after them with growls. But those dogs quickly realized that two legs could sometimes outpace four, or perhaps they were frightened off by the loud shouts of the man carrying the frantic girl.

By the time they reached the next village, and dogs attempted to chase them again, the girl was no longer afraid. Giggling while watching the dogs chase them, waiting for Yan Fei to shout at them again, causing the dogs to slow their pace from fright.

Throughout the wild chase, the girl initially worried that Yan Fei might tire. Still, she found that he was only slightly sweaty and didn’t appear to have run hundreds of miles while carrying a person on his back.

With more and more pedestrians on the road, the pair’s speed surpassed those leisurely riding bicycles and those walking.

They even overtook several hand-tractors, which could only saunter along the rural roads. Unsurprisingly, they were left behind by the duo, eliciting astonishment from the drivers watching their retreating figures.

This was indeed a shocking sight: a man carrying another person, running faster than bicycles and tractors, early in the morning. If it weren’t for the joyous expressions on their faces, some might have mistaken them for ghosts—last night was the Ghost Festival. Could this be a pair of ghost lovers who had ventured out for a nocturnal rendezvous and had missed their time to return to the Ghost Gate?

By the time they reached the suburban city, Yan Fei, who knew the path like the back of his hand, found a spot and let the girl down.

"Oh... It’s so numb! My legs and feet don’t want to move..." The girl said the moment she got down, finding her legs and feet numb. While trying to condition her numb limbs with the support of Yan Fei’s arm, she asked, "Where are we now?"

The girl didn’t know what was in store for her. When they made the brief stop by the grave earlier, it hadn’t been long enough for her limbs to go numb. This time over, it clearly wasn’t quite the same. She had been so engrossed in the fun that she didn’t notice until she had to walk on her own again that it felt like her limbs were no longer hers.

Yan Fei held the girl as she stretched her muscles, and pointed ahead, "You see that turning at the junction? There’s a bus stop there. The bus will take us straight to the train station. There are many people around, and you might feel embarrassed if I continued carrying you. Let’s take a bus instead. We just happen to ask how to get to the zoo."

The girl glanced in the direction he pointed, but she could not see the bus stop. Now the sky was fully lit, and there were many pedestrians on the road. The sight of two people standing at the roadside, supporting each other, certainly drew attention. The girl was embarrassed to be the subject of people’s stares.

Still stretching, she grumbled, "It’s because of you. You insisted on carrying me, making my legs so limp now that I can’t even walk."

Yan Fei just chuckled, obviously pleased with himself, "I wanted to show you that even while carrying you, I could still run so far. Without you, I could have run even further."

"Now you know, even if you go to the Provincial University, I can still run all the way there just to see you. So you don’t need to always fret about not being able to see me because you’re studying far from here."

And so, the girl, as she kept flexing and stretching, was once again moved by the thoughtful words of this silly lad.
