Chapter 193: Chapter 62: Delivering Wine, Venting Anger, Taking Advantage_2
Well, even such a simple little thing can reveal a lot about people’s attitudes. No one was at Yan Fei’s house, the vegetable stalls on both sides stayed the same as before, just taking up a bit more space in the middle, but still leaving room for passage. Yet at Old Xu’s Family, despite the house being full of people, they had set up their stall as usual.
Old Ding, that old geezer, was quite the gossip on the town! Seeing Yan Fei coming, he didn’t make it to his own doorstep before he stopped. Then, taking one look at that big wine jar, he made a good guess and called out to Yan Fei with a chuckle: "What’s up, Xiao Fei? Can’t tell me that’s some wine you’re taking to your father-in-law’s house?"
Xu Xiaoyan hadn’t returned, and she felt too embarrassed to accompany Yan Fei delivering the wine. The rest of the family members were waiting inside the house! Seeing Yan Fei arrive, all three women, apart from Old Xu, stood up and prepared to walk out from behind the counter to greet him.
Since Yan Fei was here to ’teach the Xu Family a lesson’, he didn’t bother to engage in small talk and didn’t even bother to respond to Old Ding’s greeting. But to Old Ding, Yan Fei’s indifference was normal. He was used to this kid behaving this way when he didn’t want to deal with people.
With Ma Chao and Heizi having prepared the wooden cart, Yan Fei simply picked up the wine jar and placed it on the cart with ease. Then, he walked straight inside.
Old Man Xu was still in a daze, not knowing what he was planning to do until he saw him walk straight to the cart. Then, with one foot, he stepped on one of the cart’s shafts. With a snap, the bowls thick cart shaft broke off.
With another step forward, the second cart shaft also broke.
The cart’s shafts were typically the most stressed parts of the cart so they were made of good wood. It surprised people when he managed to snap them so easily, causing some immediate hushed relays.
Thankfully, the old man had propped up both cart shafts with a long bench. Otherwise, if someone had only propped up one, Yan Fei’s first step would have destroyed the cart.
The old man was still stunned. By the time he reacted, Yan Fei had already entered the house. As he jumped up, preparing to shout something, Heizi stepped forward and muttered some words that were most likely not pleasantries, causing the old man to fall silent.
At this point, Heizi had fully embodied the essence of being a ’yes-man’. Whatever Yan Fei said, he would absolutely carry it out, even though he might murmur a few words of discomfort. Even if Yan Fei didn’t say anything, he would find opportunities to demonstrate his industriousness.
Especially after carrying large stones, aside from frequently stealing glances at Yan Fei with an odd look, Heizi’s attitude towards Yan Fei was almost...to the point where other people thought he was acting abnormally.
Perhaps the old man hadn’t yet heard about Yan Fei carrying the large stones, but he must’ve heard about what happened in his own village - two village miscreants who ended up being thrown into a bridge hole overnight, narrowly escaping with their lives.
In fact, not only did the old man remain unresponsive initially, but even Old Ding, who had greeted Yan Fei, was completely unresponsive as well. Plenty of people noticed Yan Fei carrying such a huge jar. Regardless of its contents, it was quite eye-catching, and all eyes were on him.
But seeing him nonchalantly walk past with an air of indifference, deftly breaking the cart shafts without even a pause, and continuing into the house lead to all sorts of murmurs and gossip once he was out of sight.
Yan Fei didn’t really care about the Xu Family’s reactions, but after entering the house and being watched by Xu Xiaoyan’s four family members, he felt a bit uncomfortable. He gave a forced smile, finding it difficult to speak. Just as he was wondering how to address them, Xu Xiaoyan’s mother enthusiastically greeted him, "Xiao Fei came, just put it behind the door. Take it easy, you’re so strong..."
The reason Xu Xiaoyan’s mother was a bit late to react was simple; she had been used to being meek and submissive her entire life. Seeing Yan Fei’s indifferent attitude was somewhat shocking to her.
She wasn’t too slow, though. It saved Yan Fei from having to speak. While he carefully placed the wine jar under Xu Xiaoyan’s mother’s guidance, he thought about what to say next. But by the time he had put the jar in place, he still hadn’t figured out anything good to say, so he finally murmured, "Well, Aunt Xu, I... I think I need to go..."
He didn’t wait for Xu Xiaoyan’s mother to respond, or to see their reactions, and just turned around and walked out.
Xu Xiaoyan’s mother called after him, "Don’t rush, Xiao Fei, I haven’t given you the money yet? Ah... this kid..."
Unsurprisingly, as soon as he stepped outside, there were all sorts looking on. There were those who had watched the entire event unfold, and more who were attracted by the spectacle.
As long as there were people gathered, there’d be something interesting to see. Those who were in the market didn’t have much to do, so they had the time to watch someone’s stall get upset - two cart shafts being snapped counted as a stall being upset.
Gathering a crowd was normal, the people who passed by without a second glance were the strange ones – unless they had some extremely urgent matter at home, they would certainly come over to take a look and gather some news, to use as conversation fodder later.
Seeing Yan Fei come out, someone in the know immediately laughed, "This is the hen-pecked son-in-law coming to take revenge for his father-in-law..."
With that sentence, everyone understood. The remaining discussions revolved around the finer details, after all, how could they go home and tell the story without knowing the particulars?
After stepping out, Yan Fei maintained a stoic expression, and the spectators naturally made way for him. Ma Chao and Heizi didn’t need any summoning from him, they simply followed him out. As Heizi left, he didn’t forget to strike a pose, making a point of winking and grinning at the vegetable seller.
