Chapter 1717: Chapter 815 Mom Picks a Car, Surprise_2
Society is truly pragmatic, and there are plenty of things that seem unfair. So most of the time, all we can do is strive, regarding ourselves as the small soldier on the chessboard of life. Even if our movements are slow, we must work hard to move forward, striving to stand in a higher position.
After hanging up the phone, Yan Fei regretted not making the call earlier. If he had, his wife might have heard the news that his mom now drives a big Jeep. Maybe it would have convinced his wife to buy a car for herself too.
It seems his mom has always had a dream of being a heroine!
Reflecting on this, Yan Fei hadn’t realized that in the future there would be a special term to describe people like his mom—"strong woman." Although Lin Xiumei had been a housewife for over twenty years and seemed indistinguishable from all the factory workers and homemakers, her secret little preferences were immediately exposed when it came to choosing a car...
Yan Fei hadn’t finished pondering when Wang Lei arrived.
No one moves faster than Wang Lei when it comes to handling Boss Yan Fei’s projects—he came to pick up some blueprints.
Then the two of them went to check out the location for the planned laboratory. Honestly, there wasn’t much to see; building it next to the original lab would suffice. Four hundred acres was still a significantly large piece of land, and constructing such small labs—ten or even eight more—wouldn’t be an issue.
Accustomed to being a hands-off manager, Yan Fei left the matter to Wang Lei after a quick look, asking no further questions, not even caring about construction costs.
Having dealt with him several times, Yan Fei understood Wang Lei well enough to trust him to know the limits. From Wang Lei’s perspective, conducting engineering projects was about profit, but how much profit depended on his skills!
Sometimes raking in hefty earnings speaks to one’s capability; other times, it could be sheer stupidity. For instance, there were still over three hundred acres of unused land at Boss Yan Fei’s place, which couldn’t realistically remain just a vegetable garden or flower patch forever. There would be plenty of collaboration in the future. If Wang Lei tried to profit too much at once and left Boss Yan Fei dissatisfied, he could lose a major client—anyone could do the math on whether that was worth it.
While Wang Lei was calculating how much material to procure, Boss Yan Fei opened up the trunk of his car and began moving items into the house one by one.
A big pile of books, along with various other small gifts.
Before long, he had filled the study upstairs entirely, and the bedroom was decorated quite nicely too—it had to be said, Boss Yan Fei had made a certain unspeakable goal his recent focus for hard work. He poured himself into this pursuit every day with unflagging enthusiasm.
Undoubtedly, the harder he worked, the more it proved that in some areas he was still a fledgling. But precisely because he was a fledgling, he had the patience to enjoy it every single day.
After finishing up, he added a touch of romance with some roses, scattering them across the room for decoration.
Since no one was monitoring him, who’d know where the roses came from anyway? In fact, those items in the study had already exceeded the capacity of his trunk space, but Miss Xu Xiaoyan had now developed the habit of not asking questions. As long as his wife didn’t ask, Yan Fei feared nothing.
Next, he started prepping food downstairs, pretending as if nothing were out of the ordinary, waiting to surprise his wife. Based on Boss Yan Fei’s limited experience, surprises tended to work better.
Then... he got a phone call from his wife: "Xiao Fei, we’re rehearsing tonight, so I won’t be home for dinner!"
"Rehearsing?" Yan Fei asked, puzzled. "What are you rehearsing now?"
"The New Year’s Day performance!" Xu Xiaoyan replied cheerily. "How about that? Surprise, huh? It’s our final year, so our dorm decided to shine at the New Year’s Eve gala and set an example for the younger students."
"Alright..." Yan Fei reluctantly muttered these two words. "But couldn’t you come home for dinner first, then go?"
"You’ve already cooked?" Xu Xiaoyan asked. "We’re really pressed for time."
"Yeah, but if you want to bring them over instead, that’s fine too. I’ve made plenty of food." Yan Fei glanced at the dog lying by the door and felt a pang of regret. Someone had to eat the food—he’d sneak the dog a midnight snack later.
Boss Yan Fei followed the old family habits; he never worried about cooking too much. Back home, there were always poultry and livestock to feed—and sometimes you had to intentionally cook extra for them.
Of course, another reason was that he had grown accustomed to relying on labor. Cooking required no effort on his part; he didn’t need to pick or clean the ingredients—he only had to choose whatever dish he felt like cooking.
Soon enough, a swarm of lively, chattering girls arrived, two of whom had clearly applied light makeup.
They each examined the prepared dishes, greeting Boss Yan Fei with lively enthusiasm. The camaraderie would’ve made anyone envious, but deep down, Yan Fei’s mood was less than thrilled—perhaps even a little crestfallen.
No wonder the girls were so excited; just one look at the gleaming bowl of braised fish chunks in the middle was enough to make anyone salivate. More importantly, those who had tasted it knew that the food at Boss Yan Fei’s place was undoubtedly top-notch. Besides the well-known premium beef, even the ordinary fish wasn’t the usual varieties people commonly ate, something that even those indifferent to fish could detect.
Actually, that bowl of fish had been an afterthought—the spot was originally reserved for a vase. Boss Yan Fei rarely indulged in acts of romance, and now that bouquet had been discarded who-knows-where.
Miss Xu Xiaoyan was highly attuned to Yan Fei’s emotions and effortlessly picked up on the trace of hidden disappointment he tried to conceal. During dinner, she gently held his hand under the table and asked, "What’s got you looking so down?"
