Chapter 1598: Chapter 764: Don’t Be Modest
One can only say that the world changes rapidly, which can be somewhat bittersweet.
Not long ago, Yan Fei was worrying about how to get his beef on the table at the exchange meeting, only to find out in the blink of an eye that he could actually attend the exchange meeting himself.
Yan Fei didn’t pay much attention to the myriad of precautions he was briefed on; he was just there to scope things out. He didn’t come alone either; he brought his wife along, hoping to give her some practice with her spoken English.
Appearance matters a great deal, or to put it bluntly, some people complain that it’s an era where looks are everything.
Mr. Madan was able to find Yan Fei for a chat, undoubtedly because of Boss Yan’s presence and the beautiful girl by his side. The two young people were a striking pair: the man tall, strong and quite handsome, and importantly, the woman tall with long legs and a graceful demeanor.
At this exchange meeting, which was mainly attended by middle-aged uncles and aunties, this pair was quite attractive—not that there were no other young people at the meeting, but most of them were service personnel or legwork staff sent by the government. Even if some of them could communicate well with the guests in foreign languages, most of them could hardly let loose.
What was originally just a casual chat turned into interest when Mr. Madan heard Yan Fei speaking fluent English.
Yan Fei’s thoughts were not mistaken; Mr. Madan, although somewhat older, was indeed the son of an official.
Don’t think it’s only the domestic inspection groups that include people who take advantage of the trip for a bit of travel; foreign ones are no different. Mr. Madan, for instance, held an official position in his city. However, it was his identity as an heir to the family business that allowed him here.
Yan Fei was actually not keen on talking with Mr. Madan, as Madan’s family was in the manufacturing industry, which was not his target clientele. Moreover, Yan Fei’s goal wasn’t countries like France—his beef did not have the Western grading, and this was a shortcoming that could not be quickly overcome.
His targeted markets were less advanced regions with more lenient grading requirements, or neighboring Russia. Being close by, there might be an opportunity to export ordinary beef as well.
Ma Dan was not a fool, noticing Yan Fei chatting while clearly distracted, looking around for potential deals; he could not help but ask, "Yan Fei, are you preoccupied with something? Are you completely uninterested in our conversation topic?"
Mr. Madan had been discussing travel destinations around the world, something Yan Fei could hardly focus on. But hearing Madan’s straightforward question, he felt a bit embarrassed, "Sorry, Madan, maybe after the event I could accompany you for a travel around the nearby cities. But right now, I want to see if I can pull in some business for my enterprise."
"Alright!" Madan was a bit disappointed. "We’re all young. I think you shouldn’t be so utilitarian. Life is so beautiful, we should enjoy it to the fullest."
"I’m truly sorry!" Yan Fei apologized again. "Opportunities like this are rare in our city, and for a small rancher like me, this is a great chance to reach out to the wider world. It’s truly a rare opportunity that I don’t want to miss."
Despite the air of a rich second generation about him, he was quite warm-hearted. Yan Fei felt quite guilty about walking away from him.
"Then I wish you success," Madan said. "I suggest you contact Mr. Polar Bear. Besides him, I don’t have much hope for other countries."
"Why?" Yan Fei wasn’t offended, but rather curious.
Through their conversation, Yan Fei had figured out that Madan was quite direct and straightforward. His saying that he wasn’t optimistic about Yan pulling in any business wasn’t meant in a bad way—if it had been, he wouldn’t have offered any suggestions after being told that Yan did not want to chat with him.
Since he had some ideas, it wouldn’t hurt to listen. Though Yan himself had been abroad many times, this was by flying out, and compared to Mr. Madan, who traveled frequently, their experiences were bound to differ.
"The problem with beef transportation," Madan said candidly. "From what I know, most wealthy people are unwilling to purchase beef that has been transported over long distances. If the beef is intended for the middle class, then shipping costs become a big issue."
"So there’s no solution?" Yan Fei asked.
"At least I can’t think of any," Madan shook his head. "Unless your beef is of remarkably high quality, classed as premium beef. But as far as I know, there aren’t any highly graded brands where you are."
"Is it impossible without a grading?" Yan Fei inquired. "My beef sells very well in Hong Kong. You know Hong Kong, right? It sells for a high price and is very popular. Although it’s not graded, in fact, we always sell it as the highest quality beef."
"Really?" Madan was now curious. "Didn’t you say your ranch is just a small countryside operation? From what I know, it’s hard to believe that a small ranch could produce high-quality beef..."
"..." Faced with Madan’s preconceptions, Yan Fei felt helpless. But he couldn’t blame the man; it was his own fault for telling Madan at the beginning of their chat that he ran a small ranch in the countryside.
Cultural differences really can lead to misunderstandings. When chatting with these foreigners, one really can’t be too modest.
"In our culture, modesty is highly valued," Yan Fei explained. "Actually, my ranch is the largest both in terms of area and breeding quantity in our province. And even nationally, it’s among the top in terms of quantity. The size of our province is roughly a third less than the land area of your country but certainly much more than a quarter."
