Chapter 1596: Chapter 763: The Symposium on the Front Page Headline

A public bus stopped in front of the Technology Market, and among the disembarking passengers, two uniformed officers passed through the market, taking a shortcut to the corner of Yan Fei’s backyard.

As they walked along the wall to the other side, the younger officer slowed his pace: "Brother Tao, are we really going to ask them?"

"Hurry up, it’s almost noon if you keep dawdling," the older officer, Brother Tao, urged discontentedly. "They asked us to investigate the situation, and you start to drag your feet. Instead of riding a bike, you want to take the bus, and you hesitate to board when there are no seats. Do you think if you drag this out till the afternoon, you’ll have completed your duty when we get back to the station?"

"Well, isn’t that distressing?" the younger officer complained with full resentment. "That Young Master didn’t commit any serious matter, I reckon a warning to behave will be enough for him. Yet a case has to be filed, making us take this trip; isn’t this making trouble out of nothing?"

"Investigating cases is our duty. If you take this bowl of rice, you have to work for it," Brother Tao said with an expressionless face.

"You don’t need to tell me that, I know," the younger officer replied reluctantly. "But there’s no evidence for this matter. Didn’t we both check it out? The window was shut, and there’s no sign of anyone entering the room. Without any evidence, how can we just investigate them? Besides, if we often disturb them, what if I also end up bitten by an insect in bed? Who am I going to turn to then?"

"If you’re not doing anything wrong, what are you afraid of?" Brother Tao stopped. "Xiao Liang, this attitude towards work won’t do. In our profession, we can encounter anything. If you’re afraid of this and that, how will you carry on with your work in the future? As a young man without any spirit, are you planning to be a legwork for the rest of your life?"

"If every day brings issues like this, I’d rather be a legwork all my life." While Xiao Liang said so, his feet kept moving. "You know, Boss Yan too, he’s been granted the license, yet he’s still not content..."

"Shut it." Brother Tao’s expression darkened, interrupting Xiao Liang’s complaint. "There’s not a shred of evidence for this matter, we’re just making inquiries, not arbitrarily accusing people. Don’t say anything recklessly until we have evidence."

"I know, I know," Xiao Liang replied impatiently, continuing to walk with his head down.

As they talked, they reached the next corner and soon after that, would be the main entrance to the yard. Upon reaching this spot, Xiao Liang hesitated again: "Brother Tao, I really don’t want to go. If it were ordinary citizens who came to report the matter, I would certainly go. But that Guo family is not made of good people either, do we really need to go to such lengths for them?"

"Moreover, don’t you feel that the higher-ups don’t want us to waste our time on this either? If they really wanted to treat this as a serious case, they wouldn’t have just sent the two of us to do the legwork."

Brother Tao paused in his steps: "Now that we’re here, are you planning to go back without doing anything?"

As a veteran officer, Brother Tao actually knew better than anyone else. The son of the Guo family from Construction Bank was bitten by an insect at night the day before yesterday. According to the hospital, the toxicity was easy to control, but they arrived a bit late, and there would likely be some trouble.

It was rather strange, the previous bite victims suffered both pain and itchiness, but this Young Master experienced neither pain nor itchiness, completely unaware. It wasn’t until nearly noon when the woman who had been up to no good with him got up and found that his leg was swollen to nearly the thickness of a waist.

This woman was only after the Young Master for a bit of money, and when she saw trouble, she became completely panicked. After calling Young Master a couple of times and failing to wake him, she got scared, grabbed her things, and disappeared without a trace, abandoning Young Master where he lay.

Thankfully, it was the Young Master’s mother who later called to ask if he was coming home for lunch. After several unanswered phone calls, she came looking in annoyance and found her son in trouble!

Having been taken to the hospital and treated, he had recovered, but the Young Master’s mother inadvertently heard rumors suggesting that this kind of poisoning had a precedent, that her son had offended someone—Usually, father and son wouldn’t share such matters with her; if not for overhearing from others, she would have thought her son had an acute illness.

In the end, the case fell on Brother Tao and Xiao Liang once again. They had been the two who previously went to Yan Fei to gather information, and now, without bothering others too much, they had been dispatched again.

Brother Tao was very clear in his heart, what Xiao Liang said was not wrong. The department really didn’t want to waste everyone’s working time on such matters—the Guo family leader was not the one who came forward, it was just the woman making a fuss. Those in the know understood that the people in charge had not spoken up, and it was likely they preferred not to make a big deal of the incident.

After all, while the circumstances were relatively common, what the Young Master had done was slightly over the line, and exposing it wouldn’t be too presentable.

Such incidents were indeed numerous, like the village head’s family running a distribution point, teachers’ relatives opening a small stationery store, and doctors establishing a pharmacy...

While commonplace, if the villagers are denied their share of land for not buying from the local distribution point, if students are made to stand as punishment for not buying notebooks from the teacher’s store, if patients are not properly treated for not purchasing medicines from the doctor’s pharmacy... that is crossing the line.

Logically, with Leader Guo around, and his Young Master running a company, as long as the prices are fair and salespeople visit, everyone tends to give some face.
