Chapter 1590: Chapter 760: Slow Down on the Road_3
Seeing that it was almost time, I called my wife and told her to get the food ready and bring the guests back for dinner. Then, I put rice into the rice cooker, leisurely turned on the gas, lit it, and started to stir-fry...
As I was preparing the hot dishes and arranging a few cold ones, before Xu Xiaoyan got home, someone knocked on the door.
Upon opening the door, Yan Fei was perplexed: "Comrades, what can I do for you?"
"You’re Yan Fei, right?" A middle-aged man in uniform spoke. "There’s a situation we need to talk to you about."
"Oh, then please come in, come in," Yan Fei immediately warmed up, welcoming them in while talking. "I’m actually cooking right now! I’ve left the stove on, give me a sec to turn it off."
"No, it’s no trouble, go ahead with what you’re doing." The two uniformed officers followed him to the kitchen door and peeked inside. Then they quietly exchanged glances, seemingly signaling something to each other.
"Whatever you need to know, just ask," Yan Fei said calmly, pouring tea for everybody as they sat down in the living room.
"It’s like this. A moment ago, did two officers from the Construction Bureau come by, saying you have unauthorized construction here?" The younger officer in uniform asked.
"Yeah!" Yan Fei sighed. "You all know what I do, don’t you? Being from the countryside and in Provincial City, I face discrimination! Things that are fine for others don’t work out when it comes to me, isn’t that infuriating? I know why; it’s all because of that Golden Eagle landscaping company’s meddling. But I’ve got a short fuse..."
"Boss Yan, let’s stick to today’s events." Interrupting Yan Fei’s rant, the middle-aged officer in uniform swiftly cut him off. "We are here to ask what you’ve been up to since those two left?"
"Cooking! What’s up?" Yan Fei asked confusedly. "I had guests over today, so as soon as they left, I’ve been busy in the kitchen and haven’t done anything else. Has something happened? Did those two do something wrong, and on their way back faced divine retribution and got struck by lightning?"
"..."
The two officers were speechless for a while before the middle-aged one coughed, saying, "Boss Yan, well, they weren’t struck by lightning, but they did get bitten by some unknown insects. It’s quite serious; they’ve been taken to the hospital. They mentioned that when they were leaving..."
"Hold on," Yan Fei interrupted him. "Bitten by insects, and it’s serious? They can still speak?"
"..." The middle-aged officer, stopping the younger one who was about to jump up, took a moment to choose his words before replying. "It was quite severe at first, but fortunately, the situation is under control now that they’re at the hospital."
"Oh, why didn’t the insects just finish them?" Yan Fei sounded disappointed. "It seems there is indeed divine justice, but it’s a tad too lenient. Still, it proves you really can’t do bad deeds... Anyway, go on, please continue."
"They said that when they were leaving, you told them to be careful on their way and not to blame you if anything happened. Did that happen?"
"Of course! I was even being polite when I said that. Think about it, I was managing my business properly, had submitted all required applications, and because I didn’t play by their under-the-table rules or buy stuff from them, they gave me trouble. Wouldn’t you be angry in my place? Isn’t it normal to say a few words to vent?"
"This..."
"And as you just mentioned, they were bitten by insects. If they’d been bitten by dogs, I’ve got some here in my yard, and there would be cause to come to me with questions. Not to boast, even if it were tigers, bears, or Golden Eagles, I’ve got them all. You could then suspect me. But insects... Look, comrades, I’m a bona fide Wan City local, many generations back. I have absolutely no knowledge of Chuan Province’s mysterious bug-rearing techniques. Imagine if I really did; who would dare bother me, right?"
"But still..."
"I think those two are just causing unnecessary work for you. Driving without closing the windows, they were probably planning to litter. Getting bitten by mosquitoes and then blaming others, if everyone were like them... imagine if people getting mosquito bites at night would call you up to investigate, suspecting someone had set the mosquitoes on them, could you handle that?"
The two uniformed officers were in quite a difficult position; the two who were bitten looked miserable, one had a swollen leg, nearly as thick as a thigh—it was rather frightening. The key thing was that they also worked for the department, and they insisted that Yan Fei threatened them earlier, implying he was responsible, and demanded an investigation.
Interdepartmental matters have to be handled with a certain amount of diplomacy. But upon reviewing Yan Fei’s record, they were faced with a big headache — ordinarily, if someone is suspected, they would be taken to the station for questioning. But this is a well-known entrepreneur, a famous author, a university student... To top it off, the allegation was insect bites, something rather dubious. What were they supposed to do with that?
Knowing full well that they were now caught between a rock and a hard place, they still had no choice but to make the trip.
The situation, upon scrutiny, did not exclude the possibility of it being a setup. After all, those two were driving with the windows down, and someone could have thrown an insect in through an open window.
The problem remained that despite the bite marks on their legs, no insects were found in the car upon inspection. And now, after seeing the food prepared in the kitchen, one could affirm that Yan Fei had been busy all along.
