Chapter 1559: Chapter 749: The First Day of School

Yan Fei felt that the role of the Youth League Secretary seemed to involve fewer responsibilities, mainly managing students’ records—which could be quite beneficial for him when looking for talent in the future. Plus, the workload wasn’t heavy, so it seemed like a good fit.

Therefore, he didn’t consider that being the Youth League Secretary was typically a role filled by female students and confidently announced his ambition to take on the position.

In reality, as a student who worked by fits and starts, he was unaware that the position of the Youth League Secretary was predominantly held by girls. From elementary school to junior high, he remembered clearly that Yang Yang, a girl who had always looked out for him, had been the class president for several years, and continued to be so into junior high. During high school, he was only aware of who the class president and youth league secretary were but never really interacted with them much.

So, in his mind, everything in a class was overseen by the class president, and the youth league secretary had nothing much to do—just tagging along like adding soy sauce to a dish. Considering this, he thought, why not join in on adding soy sauce, which could also provide a convenient way to get to know students from other grades and departments.

Lu Bin continued to encourage students to nominate their class president, and finally, He Miao was elected. Having a good image as a female student was a significant advantage, especially in a class where the male-to-female student ratio was three to one.

Fu Lulu successfully became the organization committee member, and another girl named Huang Xuan was elected as the propaganda committee member.

Wang Xiangsheng became the study committee member, as there was no other position that suited him. This guy was incredibly shy—an even more introverted character than Yan Fei’s old deskmate An Changhe.

Hu Yidao, or rather Hu Jianshe, was uncontestably elected as the deputy class president and sports committee member. This guy was quite outspoken, saying that his academic performance might be lacking and his personality a bit careless, but he could cooperate well with others. He claimed that if he were to be the class president, he might lead the whole class astray—his academic grades weren’t exactly stellar, but his physical education scores were perfect, and with the twenty extra points he gained from long-distance running competitions, he barely made the cutoff for Agricultural University.

Nonetheless, it was still an impressive feat to get into Agricultural University, and no one really minded the details. Even though his score was just on the cutoff, with such marks, he could’ve gone to Capital and attended Renmin University if not Shuimu or Yanjing, couldn’t he?

Hu Jianshe’s carefree nature made him quite popular. Many people had started to call him Hu Yidao, and he responded with laughter, likely accustomed to the nickname from high school.

Another scrawny male student named Mao Jie was elected as the life committee member, and a guy named Han Ming became the discipline committee member—there were already quite a few positions for a class of just forty students; any more and everyone would end up being a class officer, which would seem absurd.

The election of class officers took up two class periods, and after a short break, Lu Bin stepped back, allowing everyone to get to know each other, familiarize themselves with the textbooks, and record their course schedules.

The first afternoon had no classes, and before leaving, Lu Bin mentioned the ongoing commodity trade fair in Provincial City. He felt it was a good opportunity for everyone to visit and explore—since everyone was new, getting out and learning more about the surroundings wouldn’t hurt.

Once Lu Bin left, Yan Fei diligently started to jot down the weekly class schedule. At that moment, he was still intent on genuinely embracing the university life.

Before he had finished recording, he felt someone approaching him. "Hero Yan, I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Hu Yidao. Can you tell me about that second-level warrior exam you passed?"

Yan Fei smiled and said to Hu Jianshe, "Actually, it’s just a type of physical education, not as mysterious as it sounds."

After a brief explanation of what it meant to be a second-level warrior, Hu Jianshe was pretty excited: "This sounds like a good opportunity. I should note it down and share it with the juniors back home..."

In many areas of Yuzhou Province, martial arts culture was quite strong, and Yan Fei guessed that Hu Jianshe came from such a place. He was asking for details to share his experiences with the kids back home—after all, an extra twenty points on the college entrance examination was quite tempting.

The two chatted for a while, and then Hu Jianshe began to reveal his true nature: "I thought university was like what they show on TV, where beautiful girls were everywhere, young and radiant. I thought getting into university meant I wouldn’t have to worry about the big issues in life... But I didn’t expect our major to be like this, with not enough girls to go around. Had I known earlier, I would have chosen a different major."

Yan Fei knew more about the situation at Agricultural University than he did and replied with a chuckle, "If that’s what you’re thinking, you should have applied for the Chinese Medicine Academy."

"Why?" Hu Jianshe was puzzled.

"The Chinese Medicine Academy has nursing classes!" Yan Fei explained.

Xu Xiaoyan’s classmate, Zhou Peipei, was at the Chinese Medicine Academy. Yan Fei had also been there to copy prescriptions and knew a bit about the academy. At the very least, he knew that the nursing classes were filled with female students, a sea of blooming flowers without a single green leaf in sight.

Hu Jianshe immediately understood and gave Yan Fei a thumbs-up: "You really are enlightened. Why didn’t I meet you earlier? If only for that piece of advice, I wouldn’t have ended up at Agricultural University!"

In those days, information wasn’t as readily available. Many high school students from counties and below made their choices based on a general direction, with little understanding of the specifics.

Studying law to become a lawyer, studying medicine to become a doctor. But what exactly one could do after attending Agricultural University wasn’t very clear to many students. A lot of them, similar to Yang Hongqi, thought like this—I come from a rural background, so by attending Agricultural University, I should be able to contribute to my hometown in the future.
