Chapter 1495: Chapter 719: Not Afraid of Stirring Trouble
To rural folks, the Provincial City, with its forest of towering skyscrapers, seems immense.
But once you get used to everything here, you’ll find that the Provincial City isn’t as big as imagined.
Socializing is just about running in circles with similar groups of people, there’s always a lot of mingling in your daily life.
Take, for example, the hotel where Yan Fei and his friends are currently at. As a newly opened high-class restaurant, even the patrons who don’t know each other, after sitting together and having a few drinks, can easily strike up conversations and find common topics to connect over.
It’s probably because there are few wealthy people, which makes the circle smaller. Take for instance the tallest building in the Provincial City where everyone is now located; a 200-meter high-rise that cost over two hundred million to build, but in the future, two hundred million won’t be considered much.
Since there were few guests, the spot Wang Yongcheng booked was a small table situated closer to a corner. When they first arrived, they were quite unobtrusive, not catching many people’s attention. After all, those who come here for a meal are either here to host guests or to sightsee. No one bothers to scan the entire restaurant for acquaintances.
Now, as their voices grew a bit louder, the people nearby began to take notice. At a table not too far from theirs, a fat man spotted Wang Yongcheng and blurted out, "Isn’t that Boss Wang? I heard some idiot took over that land parcel from you. Now you’ve got money to dine out?"
Wang Yongcheng glanced over irritably at the remark but quickly composed himself and explained to Yan Fei, "Brother Yan, pay him no mind. That’s Boss Song from Siming; we had a minor grudge over a land dispute before. It’s directed at me, don’t be upset, don’t be upset..."
Yan Fei was clear on the situation, figuring it must be more than a ’minor grudge’. Business rivals often become adversaries, and since Siming is another real estate company, it was normal to have a conflict with Wang Yongcheng, given the size of Provincial City.
But to reach the point where disparaging remarks are made upon seeing each other, the dispute must’ve been significant.
However, it really wasn’t Yan Fei’s concern. As for the unsolicited jab, Boss Yan, who’s always held himself with dignity, simply chuckled and responded, "It’s fine, a trivial matter. Let’s just ignore it."
Chen He broke into laughter, "Boss Yan is truly magnanimous. I really admire that."
Young folks tend to be hotheaded, and those with some success are even more so. To achieve a bit of success and still remain composed—that’s being truly open-minded—of course, if someone without achievement doesn’t mind these matters, that’s just grinning and bearing it.
The group didn’t take it seriously, and seeing this, the fat man also lost interest. After all, this was a high-class establishment, and with only a handful of rich patrons, the clientele had some influence and he couldn’t go too overboard.
However, what happened next was beyond words. Once all the dishes were served and they were halfway through the meal, the fat man, now emboldened by the alcohol, started yapping again, "You all don’t know yet? Boss Wang here can sure endure. He snatched a piece of land from me once. He grabbed another plot last time and ended up with a useless piece of land, nearly too broke to eat. Now he’s somehow found a fool to take that land off his hands and can afford to dine out... Ah sh*t, who the hell just threw something at me..."
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a big-time boss like himself would swear. The term "nouveau riche" became popular because many of the entrepreneurs from this era were not very cultured.
So no surprises when he cursed out loud in shock; it was pretty typical.
Boss Song, after his outburst, stood up and clumsily reached behind his neck, but due to his size, he struggled in vain. Fortunately, he sensed something was wrong and quickly sent both hands to the back to yank his shirt out from his pants.
But this move only made things worse.
It was hot, and Boss Song was wearing a white shirt. Unbeknownst to him, but quite obvious to others seated behind him, there was a round object rolling inside his shirt!
Initially lodged at the back of his neck, as he leaned back in an attempt to extract it, the swift motion made the object slide down to the bottom. When he pulled his shirt out, the force sent the object falling into his pants.
A young man from the same table, sensing something amiss, quickly came over to check on the situation.
But the youth couldn’t help either. As Boss Song hopped around, the round object tumbled out of his pant leg, rolling quite a distance on the floor, and left a trail in its wake.
Those nearby couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight, with some taking pleasure in his misfortune. Normally, it was common to laugh and joke loudly at other restaurants, but at this establishment, everyone was intentionally quiet.
When Wang Yongcheng spoke too loudly earlier, he was called out by Boss Song and promptly lowered his voice, and everyone else simply overlooked it. But Boss Song, who was yelling without restraint after a few drinks, drew much disapproval.
There’s an expression, "shame by association", and with Boss Song hollering away, others felt this: Think you’re a big shot? While few here might be wealthier than you, it wouldn’t be hard to find several with more clout than you, right? You don’t see them behaving like that, do you?
