Chapter 1489: 716_2
An Changhe was just calling to remind Yan Fei about the time to estimate his scores and fill out college preferences, telling him not to forget to go early. He also rambled on about his own feelings—despite being in his early twenties and quite popular at school, he always felt everyone else was younger, feeling too embarrassed to talk about it. Only Yan Fei, though the youngest, was already considered a successful person, so age wasn’t an issue for him.
When his desk mate hung up the phone, Yan Fei’s mobile phone started to get busy. Everyone who knew he’d taken the college entrance exam was timing it to find out how he did as soon as possible. They had refrained from disturbing him the past couple of days, but now, calls had piled up. From the moment he stepped into his house to after dinner, his phone hadn’t stopped ringing.
Neighbors from the housing complex also came to inquire how Yan Fei did on his exam. Yan Fei could only manage to say "not bad," which he said so many times he was left feeling thirsty and hoarse. Seizing the chance when there were fewer people around, he quickly drove home with his wife.
Halfway home, the girl finally said from the back seat, "If I hadn’t come today, you wouldn’t have to go home now, right?"
Yan Fei almost slammed on the brakes out of frustration, "There’s nothing to it, can you please not overthink?"
"I didn’t say anything, did I?" the girl said with a sly smile. "It seems like you’re still a bit regretful, aren’t you? You’re still thinking about her!"
"I..." Yan Fei was lost for words again.
"Okay, okay, I won’t tease you anymore," the girl said in a magnanimous tone. "Considering it’s your first offense, I’ll let it slide. Hurry up and go home. Try to write out the answers from memory when you get there; it’ll be helpful for estimating your score."
"No need." Yan Fei was very calm about his exam. "Really, no big deal. Getting into Agricultural University is as easy as picking snails with three fingers, almost a sure thing! Don’t worry, by the end of August, we can go to school together."
"Mmm!" As soon as she thought about the future of them always being together, the girl’s mood immediately felt lighter.
"So, uh, the exams are over... can we maybe tonight..." Yan Fei, seeing the girl silent, couldn’t help but whisper tentatively.
"I plan to go home tonight to share the good news with them." The girl felt it would be rather dangerous to stay tonight, so she quickly found an excuse. "I haven’t stayed at home since I came back all these days. Now that your exams are over, let me spend a couple of days with my mom, okay?"
Yan Fei’s face immediately showed his disappointment, "Can’t you go back tomorrow?"
"No," the girl flatly refused and then softened her tone. "I know what you’re thinking. You’re still young; we can talk about it later, okay? Good Yan Xiaofei, you’re the best, right?"
Yan Fei immediately surrendered, "Then, shall I pick you up after two days?"
"Mhm!" The girl lightly bit her lip, mustered her courage, and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. "Don’t worry, I’m already yours, so no need to rush... By the way, aren’t you in a hurry to translate your novel? You’ve got to start today, finish the translation as soon as possible, and then ask Will to help get a publisher to send it out..."
How could I not be impatient!
I’ve already learned so many moves!
Yan Fei had many grievances in his heart, but seeing the girl’s tender and sweet expression, he just couldn’t bring himself to firmly say he wanted her to stay.
After sending his wife home, Boss Yan switched back to his no-one-allowed-near mode, squatting alone at his office desk, beginning to translate his novel. Distractedly translating for a while, he then started aimlessly browsing on his computer.
While looking, he found something to busy himself with.
A lot happened on the last day of the college entrance exams, but the biggest event was on the other side of the strait, where someone had made an outrageous remark that sparked a clamor of comments online, calling for a fight against them.
At that moment, Boss Yan was so idle he was getting restless, and upon seeing this, he immediately got excited: Well, let me go over and take a look...
Isn’t it said that idleness leads to mischief!
What could you possibly see flying over there now, in the middle of the night, not to mention how tiring that would be?
But in his current state of wanting to stir up trouble even when there was none, Boss Yan was anxious to find something to do!
After flying for a few hours and regaining his senses, he looked down at the brightly lit city on the small island below and was bewildered: What am I doing here?
In Boss Yan’s view, the island right beneath him was different from that other island nation. The small island was like his own rebellious child; it’s okay to hit or beat when disobedient, but there’s no need to cripple it, right?
But since he had come, it would be uncomfortable not to do something, so after thinking it over, he flew towards the island nation.
The word on the street was clear: This July was when the great devil descends from the sky. Now was the perfect time to cause some mischief!
He had already scoped out the place long ago. The only reason he hadn’t done anything was that he wasn’t in the mood, but now that he felt like it, he did it.
He actually thought that after doing well in the college entrance exams something exciting would happen tonight, but didn’t expect his wife to leave so decisively... At this moment, as a young man stood up by his wife, whatever he did next could only be seen as understandable.
He set his sights on toys that could fly!
This was what Yan Fei had been planning all along. Ever since he saw Chief Pi and his group ecstatic over the airplane under the tarpaulin, Yan Fei felt that it was necessary to stock up—why not learn how to fly one, and perhaps sell it as scrap when bored?
Causing trouble for the enemy is helping oneself. After all, it’s not painful when it’s someone else’s stuff. Why not take if it’s free? Could he come out with nothing to show for his efforts? Was Boss Yan’s time so worthless?
With a whole bunch of excuses for himself, Boss Yan arrived at the air force base on a certain island, completely at ease.
Half an hour later, when Xiaohei took to the skies again, the ground below had turned to a white patch, devoid of almost everything except for not having been dug three feet deep.
This was also like catching hares by spreading out a net—although no hares were caught, at least a rabbit was bagged.
Returning contented, he sat in front of his computer, refreshing news web pages over and over, waiting to see the headlines.
But after a long wait, there was still no news, so he began to pick up pen and paper, preparing to draft a new novel, titled "Survival Diary on a Deserted Island"—the unfortunate troops stationed by Boss Yan were now divided into several groups on various islands, never lacking material for a novel.
He indulged in his antics all night, and by dawn, the internet exploded.
It was impossible not to explode. An entire air force base, several thousand personnel, along with many planes and military facilities, all disappeared without a trace. It was impossible to hide this from the islanders living nearby. Moreover, an air force base couldn’t possibly have no communication with the outside world, and the sudden loss of contact surely meant that communication officers would report it to their superiors.
I forgot to mention, this air force base wasn’t Japanese. It was American.
American soldiers had always been arrogant in Japan. Even though they were on someone else’s land, they acted more like the local lords, domineering and out of control.
If that had been all, it might have been overlooked. After all, it’s a society governed by the rule of law nowadays. Even if arrogant, they still had to follow some protocol—nothing more than messing with a few local women—a common occurrence, with such news not being rare. A few years ago, some soldiers had abused a little girl, and the commander stationed here stubbornly refused to extradite the three men to Japan.
But such incidents were few. More often than not, the relationships were consensual. Japan was quite liberal in that matter, and it was common for high school students to earn some extra cash. Additionally, a deep-seated servility in Japanese culture meant that many were proud to be associated with these soldiers, even taking pride in serving them in bed.
But all things have their limits. People can’t always be pushed around, not to mention that the air force base was built not far from a residential area. Imagine how the locals felt when the soldiers conducted exercises day and night, with fighter jets flying overhead with a deafening roar—suffering in silence, with nowhere to turn for recourse.
Unexpectedly, they found unusual tranquility in the middle of the night and were relieved at the prospect of finally getting some sleep. But when some noticed not even a speck of light at the base, things became quite... peculiar.
Curious, some residents approached and saw that the once awesome base now had nothing left but foundations.
Once the news spread, everyone’s emotions were mixed: Surely the soldiers were a nuisance, but their presence represented the support of their mighty American leaders. Now that the entire base had vanished mysteriously, what would their leaders’ reaction be? Would they become angry and send a couple of enhanced missiles in retaliation?
