Chapter 1447: Chapter 700 This Ship is Huge

The countdown to the college entrance examination posted in the high school classrooms dwindled, with each passing day. Non-graduating students walked with a spring in their heels, their faces full of smiles even with final exams looming; after all, the long-awaited and all-too-brief summer vacation was just around the corner — a dream come true that was almost laugh out loud joyous.

But for the seniors, those dwindling numbers were like a death knell, involuntarily tightening the grip of anxiety around their hearts. Even in a high school in a small town like Sancha River, where the prospects of university acceptance were bleak, who could help but try their luck at this critical juncture?

Yan Fei began to sweat bullets too, not over the college entrance exam but because the summer holiday at university started earlier, and Xu Xiaoyan’s vacation was just around the corner.

Once his wife returned, finding the time for a long-haul flight would be tricky — he hadn’t forgotten his initial plan, to travel far by air. But one postponement led to another, turning this man of action into a severe procrastinator.

Thankfully, just as Yan Fei was scratching his head for an excuse to sneak away for a few days, Chen Yingjun presented the perfect alibi: He was getting hitched.

The timing of Chen Yingjun and Du Minghui’s wedding didn’t align with their original plan. They’d planned to tie the knot after Du Minghui successfully passed her thesis defense and obtained her diploma.

But marriage is sometimes an unstoppable force, regardless of personal intentions, just as Heizi had impulsively tied the knot. When the bride-to-be suddenly becomes ’for two,’ a wedding becomes a must-do.

Despites shouts of modern thinking, if the bride couldn’t fit into her wedding dress, it would stir discomfort, particularly at a time when not everyone’s views were so progressive.

Upon receiving the news, Yan Fei refrained from ridiculing Chen Yingjun, instead promptly promising him, "I’ll prepare a generous gift for you, something to deeply move little Chen, who kept insisting my presence was gift enough."

Once the call ended, however, Yan Fei was utterly lost. Gift-giving was not his forte!

Worse still, he didn’t even have time to ponder over a suitable present. He had other plans to tackle during this period!

Luckily, he was eating in the cafeteria right at that moment and blurted out, "Old Chen is getting married. What do you guys think I should give him?"

A group of people chowing down around him burst into a heated discussion. Heizi piped up first, "The guy didn’t even call me, can you believe it? Just shove a red envelope with two hundred and fifty in his hand, that’s fine."

The entire room burst into laughter but then got down to business, throwing out suggestions to Yan Fei. Despite Chen Yingjun’s many quirks, he was well liked, and everyone approached the matter with great enthusiasm.

Yet, after much back and forth, they couldn’t settle on anything particularly good.

Listening to their advice, Yan Fei turned to Heizi, "Is there anything suitable in your collection room?"

"Pots, pans, and the like definitely won’t cut it. Something nice... Ah, there’s a Guanyin of Child-Giving, how about that?" Heizi frowned, pondering. "It does seem a bit tacky though. I bet it’s valuable, but it’s not exactly celebratory. Plus, he’s not into that stuff. His wife’s already expecting, so isn’t that a bit redundant? Why don’t you take a look yourself, Brother Fei? If it looks good to you, then go ahead and gift that."

Yan Fei set down his bowl and followed Heizi for a look. The item was indeed a fine piece, but its religious overtones were heavy. Imagining the ostentatious Chen Yingjun, he doubted that he would appreciate it.

As time slipped away without any progress, Yan Fei grew impatient, "Forget it, I’ll figure something out myself! Old Chen even mentioned you should come too, but since we’re so busy these days, I’ll go alone. I’ll take care of the gift; you stay and keep an eye on things!"

What could Heizi say but nod in agreement?

"I’m heading out then. I’ll think of a gift on the way, or if all else fails, I’ll go with a hefty red envelope. I’ll try to make it quick, exams are around the corner and time is tight..." Yan Fei packed a small travel bag, slinging his magical small backpack over his shoulder, and got into his car to leave.

Heizi shouted after him, "Why don’t you wait for Old Chen’s truck to come pick up the goods before you leave?"

Yan Fei waved him off, "His truck is like a torture chamber; I’m not sitting in that!"

But as he reached the gate, he changed his mind. He turned the car around, parked it at the gate, and strode toward the station with his luggage, "Driving is tiring too. I’ll see if taking a train or plane is better..."

In absence of a direct highway, driving was indeed not a pleasant task. This excuse seemed plausible to others, but to Heizi... a doubting look crept across his face.

Yan Fei didn’t pay any mind to Heizi’s muttering. He got off at the intersection leading to the city, disappeared with a turn, and was gone without a trace.
