Chapter 1427: Chapter 691 Wild Boar_2
Yan Fei at this moment couldn’t possibly admit he was planning to go in. Both Old Niu and Secretary Qu were following him, especially Secretary Qu who seemed to have something to say the whole way, probably thinking about some concerns. Yan Fei could guess what this was about: under these circumstances, they definitely wouldn’t let him "venture into danger."
At this point, he was regretting not having come here to let Old Niu take him for an excursion. It was an area frequently visited by people, just a small patch of mountain forest, hardly suited for his "big discovery"!
Having no other choice, he accompanied them for a while at the mountain peak, called back Tiger Da and Bear Da Er to continue accompanying the group, and then they all began heading down the mountain.
Walking back the way they came was much more relaxed for everyone.
When the sky became dark, Old Niu’s son took out a few flashlights. It turned out that some of the hastily gathered flashlights hadn’t been used for a while, and two out of the four didn’t work, which pissed Old Niu off so much that he cussed at his son.
Fortunately, they had already reached a part of the path that was in better condition, and everyone was indifferent about the flashlight situation.
However, they hadn’t gone far before Yan Fei suddenly stopped in his tracks. "There really are wild boars here, you guys wait up, I’m going to check it out..."
With those words, he leaped onto a nearby large rock. After a few quick movements, his figure vanished.
Old Niu and Secretary Qu hastily called after him, but it was Old Niu’s son who was the most shocked. He grabbed Old Niu, who was about to rush after Yan Fei, and said, "Dad, slow down! It’s fine if we just wait here..."
Old Niu turned around and scolded, "What are you blabbering about, you little brat? If something happens to Younger Brother Yan, do you think you can handle it?"
Xu Xiaoyan was also somewhat worried. After all, wild boars were rumored to be very dangerous. However, she still tried to reassure him, "Brother Niu, it’s okay. Yan Fei knows what he’s doing. Besides, Tiger Da is with him, there’s definitely no problem."
Her words seemed to remind Old Niu of something critical: it would be troublesome if something happened to Boss Yan for sure, but it would be even more of a headache if something were to happen to this girl beside him...
His son, well accustomed to being scolded, didn’t get angry but simply walked over to where Yan Fei had been standing, "Boss Yan’s kung fu is truly impressive, I’m in awe every time I see it. Amazing, huh? Look how far he leaped straight onto that rock."
Boss Niu was still doing okay, but when Secretary Qu followed his son’s pointing hand and saw the distance, he was so astounded he nearly forgot about the danger, walking over beside the rock and marveled, "Darn, it’s so high even standing next to it I doubt I could jump on top..."
Old Niu followed up with a comment, "Yeah, now I certainly couldn’t make it, but back when I was young, I could have done it easily."
The young man with Secretary Qu and Old Niu’s son also came over to size up the rock. The young man said nothing, but Old Niu’s son smirked, "Dad, you’re quite the storyteller. Could you really jump up there when you were young?"
"Smack!"
Old Niu’s hand flew out in a slap, "You cheeky rascal, you think I was like you when I was young? Back then, we didn’t eat much and often ran around in the mountains. Our bodies were much stronger than a hothouse flower like you."
Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t help but chuckle to herself; this father and son were actually quite amusing.
After this little interlude, the group’s tension eased somewhat. Still, Secretary Qu suggested, "We should still follow slowly and see if there’s any situation, right?"
The area inside the mountain without a path was particularly difficult to traverse, especially as it was growing darker. Relying on the two functioning flashlights, they stepped gingerly forward, their concern growing with every step.
Old Niu was becoming increasingly anxious, raising his voice and calling out, "Younger Brother Yan, Younger Brother Yan..."
After calling out twice, Yan Fei’s voice came from a distance, "Brother Niu, don’t come over here, the path is rough. I’m heading back."
His voice provided relief and both Secretary Qu and Old Niu let out a long breath.
Old Niu shouted, "Younger Brother Yan, take your time, we’re okay over here."
Yan Fei shouted back from the other side, "I’m fine too..."
But after he shouted, it took a while before a silhouette staggered up from the other side. Old Niu hurried over to greet him, taking a few steps before realizing something was amiss, "Is this Bear Da? Bear Er?"
Xu Xiaoyan crisply cried out, "Bear Da Bear Er?"
Hearing the noise, the dark figure immediately let out a shout and then crouched down, sprinting over in bursts just like the other figure behind him.
Next, they saw Tiger Da’s figure slowly coming over. Old Niu, who had originally intended to walk forward a bit to meet Yan Fei, settled down completely and stood still honestly.
Yan Fei’s figure was the last to appear. As he drew closer, everyone saw he was dragging a sizeable, dark object on the ground, which looked quite hefty.
Before Old Niu could shine his flashlight over, Yan Fei smiled and said, "There was indeed a wild boar over there—Tiger Da and the others killed a young one. I figured since it was already dead, it’d be a waste not to bring it back."
"Wow, it’s really not small," Old Niu commented as he illuminated the boar’s neck with his flashlight, revealing a bloody wound. "In the past two years without guns, even if we saw such a big one, there was nothing we could do. I didn’t expect to luck out and get to indulge in some wild boar meat tonight thanks to Tiger Da."
Yan Fei almost despised the man internally. It would have been fine just to say it once, but he kept repeating it—as if others might not have guns, but I don’t believe you truly couldn’t get your hands on an old hunting shotgun.
Secretary Qu was more straightforward, "Old Niu, I’ve been here for more than just a year or two. Today that Boss Yan came, and you invited me, I can’t be unappreciative... If you have anything good, bring it out quickly, don’t hide it."
In the darkness, no one could see if Old Niu’s face turned red, but they heard him say, "I don’t have much good stuff, let’s ask back in the village, I reckon we could still get some wild chickens or something."
It’s traditional to ’live off the mountain,’ and even with bans, unless forest rangers patrol the mountains every day, it’s hard to prevent the people living near the mountains from secretly catching some game.
Moreover, animals like common wild boars, chickens, and rabbits do need to be hunted. If not hunted for a long time, in these small forests with no natural predators, their populations could explode into a pestilence before long.
The two young assistants took the hint and rushed forward to take the wild boar from Yan Fei’s hands. However, as soon as Yan Fei released it, Secretary Qu’s assistant failed to catch it firmly, and it fell to the ground again.
Old Niu’s son stepped forward to lift a leg, "Whoa, it’s really heavy, must be about two hundred catties, right?"
Old Niu came over and slapped him, "Get out of the way, this thing is at most one hundred catties. I told you that you’re not up to it, didn’t I?"
Seeing that he wanted to lift it, Yan Fei quickly reached out and picked it up again, "Alright, alright, let me carry it! We still have a way to go!"
Old Niu and Secretary Qu didn’t find it appropriate to let a guest do the work, so Secretary Qu suggested, "Get a stick and tie it up, carry it that way."
Old Niu’s experience was even richer, "Don’t carry it, Da Xiong, you find some rope, and I’ll do the tying."
As he spoke, he shone his flashlight around until he found a branch with three or four offshoots, laughing, "Alright, that’s it. Chop it down, tie the wild boar to it, and it’ll be easier to drag."
It sounded simple, but once he got to the branch, he realized it was a bit too high to reach from the ground.
After a couple of tries, he turned around and called, "Old Qu, come and hold the flashlight for me, I’m going up to chop it..."
Normally, this would be a task for the younger men, but considering the young these days weren’t quite up to scratch, he gave up on expecting much from them.
It was Yan Fei who extended his hand to pick up the Mountain Opening Knife Old Niu’s son had set aside and stepped forward, "Here, let me try."
With that, he leapt up. Secretary Qu hadn’t even managed to shine the flashlight his way before he landed again, and then he caught the large branch that had just been chopped down with a raised hand.
"Damn!" Old Niu couldn’t help but swear as he looked at the thick branch. "Younger Brother Yan, that’s some real Kung Fu you’ve got there!"
Yan Fei laughed heartily, "I’m not boasting, but this really is ’very simple.’"
With that, he wielded the knife and quickly trimmed the branch: "Look, this should work better, right?"
Once the wild boar was tied up, the task of dragging it naturally fell to the two somewhat disheartened ’greenhouse flowers’—they were too struck by the fact that a big boss like Yan Fei had such great physical skills. Truly, comparing goods makes one throw them away, and comparing people makes one despair!
They arrived back in the village much later than Old Niu had estimated. However, someone was there waiting to arrange dinner, and it was deep into the night by the time they ate. Even Secretary Qu didn’t leave, deciding to stay overnight and continue accompanying Boss Yan the next day.
