Chapter 1416: Chapter 687 Unless I Can Fly_2

Boss Zeng’s older brother lived in the family members’ yard, not in some remote area. The assault took place at an intersection and was witnessed by quite a few people, although it was at night and most people coming and going from work were afraid of getting involved. Only some people secretly called the police from a distance, and later someone helped by calling an ambulance.

These bystanders didn’t know the identity of the parties involved in the fight, nor did they hear what the assailant said—they all watched from afar. There were three individuals involved, and Boss Zeng and his bodyguard appeared to have the physical advantage, so even though they were constantly getting beaten, others still perceived it as a fight, not an assault as Boss Zeng had claimed.

Baoguo was furious when he found out, but he still stifled his anger, took the task, and drove a van from the station out of the city area before calling Yan Fei on the phone, "Yan Fei, you think you’re all grown-up now, huh? Going to Provincial City to beat people up, are you? There are people coming down from the city now to investigate your assault, so you better think about what you’re going to say!"

Yan Fei replied softly on the other end, "Uncle Baoguo, what’s going on? When did I go to Provincial City to beat someone up? Speak quietly, I’m in class at school right now!"

"You’re still playing dumb?" Baoguo was fuming. "I’m already breaking the rules by calling you, and here you are arguing back! You know very well whether it was you; just think carefully about what to say!"

Baoguo was very sure; after all, naming yourself while masked was very much in Yan Fei’s style—he had done similar things before, and even glamorized them as revenge that isn’t satisfying unless the victim knows who’s behind it.

As for why breaking the rules to make a call, it wasn’t really a big deal. The assignment to cooperate with officials from the provincial government on this case obviously meant they knew about his familial relation with Yan Fei. Even if they had forgotten that, they should have known he was from Sancha River. Thus, sending him was clearly meant to give him a heads-up so that Boss Yan wouldn’t be caught unprepared.

In the end, everyone has their own sense of justice, and it’s normal for people to lean a bit towards those who try to do good over those who don’t.

But what Baoguo hadn’t expected was that after he spoke so directly, Yan Fei still continued to protest his innocence, "Uncle Baoguo, don’t wrongly accuse me; what exactly happened? Explain it to me!"

Although Baoguo was angry, hearing Yan Fei speak this way, he couldn’t help but start to doubt his own judgment: "Last night, Zeng Zhaokun got beaten up in Provincial City. The assailant claimed to be Yan Fei, and threatened more beatings if the money wasn’t returned—wasn’t that you?"

"He got beaten up?" Yan Fei sounded almost delighted. "Isn’t that a good thing? I wish it were me, but it truly wasn’t. I was in the lab all last night, keeping Liu JinXue and Yang Hongqi company pulling an all-nighter, and wrote several thousand words for an article—Professor Qi can vouch for me on that. How could I have run off to Provincial City to beat him?"

Baoguo was troubled. "Really? But it all seems so much like your doing!"

"It really wasn’t me!" Yan Fei denied vehemently, returning to his prior glee. "Uncle Baoguo, you’ve got to tell me how badly did he get beaten? Any broken arms or legs, or did he end up paralyzed?"

Baoguo pondered for a moment, thinking he might have indeed unjustly accused his nephew, so he explained, "I haven’t found out the specifics. People from Provincial City will probably be here before noon. Let’s talk when they arrive! As long as it wasn’t you, that’s a relief. Focus on your studies and don’t worry about other things; we won’t let anyone falsely accuse you."

After hanging up the phone, Yan Fei chuckled and moved the textbook that was covering his face aside, listened to the bell ring changing the period, and grabbed another textbook to continue his class.

Unexpectedly, the phone rang again. This call was somewhat baffling: "Boss Yan, right? Someone from Provincial City will come to see you in a while to investigate last night’s assault on Zeng Zhaokun."

The caller hung up after just one sentence, without leaving a name.

Yan Fei was lucky to have a good memory, he recognized the voice on the phone as familiar, reminiscent of the night his van was smashed.

It’s the same old adage: everyone has their own measure of right and wrong. The person tipping him off didn’t even leave a name, nor did they expect any reward from Yan Fei—they simply thought that someone like Boss Zeng deserved a beating, whether or not it was Boss Yan who did it. A tip was better than no tip.

After hanging up the phone, Yan Fei took out the draft he had written last night, ready to polish it further.

That morning, Professor Qi had really praised him, saying that although the beginning of his story was a bit bizarre, the environmental descriptions and the flora and fauna all seemed quite convincing. The plot was also engaging enough to keep readers going, suggesting that with some serious revisions, it could be published in some magazines.

Due to Professor Qi’s praise, Liu JinXue and Yang Hongqi, who had stayed up all night, came over to read what he had written. Liu JinXue was not as accepting of such unorthodox stories as Professor Qi and held his tongue only because the professor was present. However, Yang Hongqi blew more praise towards his idol, suggesting that the article could definitely be published in a magazine called Science Fiction World.

Yan Fei corrected some typos and then continued writing, adding another thousand words or so before he received a call from the lab saying someone was looking for him.

Packing up his things, Yan Fei quietly signaled his teacher and sneaked out the back door.

Back at the lab, he met Lin Baoguo and two others. After Lin Baoguo had introduced everyone and urged Yan Fei to cooperate, Comrade Xiao Hu began, "Comrade Yan Fei, we’re here because there’s a situation we need to understand. Last night in Provincial City, there was an assault involving Zeng Zhaokun and his driver—you know them, right?"

Yan Fei nodded, "I know them, that guy owes me money and won’t pay up. I’ve been wanting to settle scores with him myself! What about him, he got beaten up?"

His way of speaking wasn’t great, and his feigned ignorance wasn’t convincing, making even Old Hu—who’d come to smooth things over—frown. Can’t the young people of today hide it better?

Xiao Hu didn’t think much of it and answered, "Yes, last night around one in the morning, while Zeng’s driver was taking him home, a masked man stopped them at Qingfeng Intersection and beat them up, resulting in multiple bruises and two fractures. You said he owes you money—that’s admitting you two have a grievance, right?"

Yan Fei nodded again, "Of course there’s a grievance. He owes me so much money and doesn’t pay—I’ve felt like beating him up myself. Now someone has done it for me, saving me the trouble! Beaten around one in the morning, heh, wandering around instead of sleeping soundly at home—it’s his own fault!"

Xiao Hu frowned at Yan Fei’s delight in others’ misfortune, "Boss Yan, here’s the thing. During the assault, the perpetrator confessed to being Yan Fei, a point both Zeng Zhaokun and his driver confirmed..."

"This is framing me!" Yan Fei immediately looked wronged as he interrupted, "Officer Hu, let me make it clear, I only thought about beating him, I haven’t laid a hand on him yet! Not to hide it from you, my wife is at the Provincial University Law School, she’s a junior. Influenced by her, I know a bit about the law... Just thinking about it isn’t illegal, right?"

Both Xiao Hu and Old Hu were between laughter and tears, Xiao Hu clarified, "That’s not what I meant, Boss Yan. I just want to ask, where were you around one o’clock this morning?"

Yan Fei suddenly realized, "Oh, that’s it! At one o’clock this morning, I was in the lab, with two other staff members. If you need to ask, I can have them come over. Also, Professor Qi can vouch for me. He came in quite early today, and if I had been in Provincial City assaulting someone at one in the morning, it wouldn’t be possible for me to get back here by then...unless I could fly!"
