Chapter 1397: Chapter 679: Encounter in the Provincial City

In the season when flowers bloomed in the warmth of spring, it was the perfect time for a spring outing.

On Sunday, after spending a week at school, students flocked to the riverside in groups, enjoying the beautiful sunny day. Basking in the warm breeze, they admired the blooming willows and the sparkling river.

Moreover, some naughty children sneakily took branches from willow trees to craft whistles and joyfully ran around, forcing numerous couples who wanted to get closer to maintain their distance to suppress the tickling in their hearts.

At the riverbank, there was a row of anglers ranging from naughty children to the elderly. For the children, it was more about playing than fishing, but the elders were undisturbed by the commotion, quietly enjoying the spring sunlight.

Further away were the more professional anglers, quite unlike the children using simple bamboo poles with lines.

However, there were exceptions. Even further away was someone using a rudimentary fishing tool, even simpler than those of the children. Yet, beside him sat a girl, catching the eye of many passersby.

A group of boys walked by on a nearby path, laughing heartily, and several couldn’t help but look back in this direction. Of course, they were not watching the man fishing with a tiny wooden stick, but rather the girl softly reading the newspaper beside him.

What a beautiful girl!

Many passing boys, after seeing the newspaper-reading girl’s face, would look at the man with the wooden stick and could not help but mutter a few words to themselves—either "Good cabbage being gnawed by a pig," or "A fresh flower planted in cow dung."

This distinctive pair was Yan Fei and his wife, who had come out to enjoy themselves. After strolling along the riverbank and finding nothing else to do, seeing others fishing, Yan Fei squatted down to join in. Though he could pull out fishing line and hooks from his amazing bag, he couldn’t pull out a fishing rod—this wasn’t a magic show, after all. Pulling out a four- or five-meter-long bamboo pole from a bag merely a foot long would surely scare people!

Luckily, the couple was just playing. Miss Xu Xiaoyan didn’t mind the attention of others, and brought some newspapers from a newsstand nearby to sit and play with him.

After reading for a while, Yan Fei said, "Stop reading, there’s nothing but war news anyway. Are you thirsty? Should I go buy some water?"

The war was the biggest news these days, with America leading NATO in a joint attack on the South Alliance, directly conducting a massive airstrike.

"It’s fine!" Xu Xiaoyan put down the newspaper. "Just sitting in the sun makes me sleepy."

"Shall we get up and walk around?" Yan Fei suggested.

"Mm, that sounds good." The girl nodded, then suddenly got excited. "Look, look, the float is moving, a fish is biting!"

Despite setting up to fish for quite a while and not even seeing a scale, the rarity of actually having a fish bite was exciting for the girl.

Yan Fei shook his head, "So close to the shore, it would be only a small fish. Let’s not fish anymore. If I want to catch fish, I’ll go downstream where there are no people to catch some."

After saying that, he reeled in the line. The girl, seeing the hook, her eyes lit up in crescents: "Haha, this fish really can’t resist, even if you don’t really want to fish."

Yan Fei also laughed, "Actually caught a silly fish, eh, but it’s a bit small."

It was indeed small, just barely big enough to bite the hook.

The girl smiled as she watched him take the thumb-sized fish off the hook and throw it back into the river, teasing, "Not bad, not bad, after half a day you finally caught a fish. At least you got a bit of fishy smell on your hands to show you weren’t just messing around."

Yan Fei expressionlessly removed the fishing line from the stick, coiled it up, and stuffed it back into his bag, fiddling with the wooden stick as he led the way. "Let’s go, let’s go. We’ll find a restaurant that serves fish to make up for it."

"Our Laoda mentioned a place with great fish head soup, do you want to try it?" Xu Xiaoyan asked. "If you want, I’ll call Laoda to ask which restaurant it is."

"Who wants fish head? It’s hardly meaty. Could it be better than a whole big fish? We should get one that has everything... Hey, why do I see someone familiar in the distance? Strange, what’s that guy doing here?" Yan Fei glanced towards the distance, then began staring intently.

The girl followed his gaze, squinting into the distance, but couldn’t make out anything, "Who is it? Should we go say hello?"

Though there were quite a few people fishing, compared to the bustling area further away where mobile street vendors sold their wares, it was relatively quiet. It wasn’t easy to clearly see someone from such a distance.

Yan Fei began to laugh, "It’s Chen Yingjun, that guy, out with his girlfriend! No wonder weren’t coming to our place, he’s here! They’re coming this way. Come here quickly, let’s hide behind this tree and scare him for not saying hello when coming to our turf."

The girl laughed and let him pull her behind the tree, whispering, "Why scare them? He’s here with his girlfriend; does he really need to report to you?"

Most of the major construction on River Heart Island was completed last year, so Professor Shu wasn’t going this year, naturally meaning the students couldn’t go either. If Chen Yingjun wanted to find the student he talked to last year, he had to come to Provincial City.
