Chapter 1371: Chapter 667 Treating Illness Chairman Dong

After An Changhe quietly explained a few problems to Yan Fei, Yan Fei didn’t know what to say to his desk mate. For every problem, An Changhe could come up with several solutions and extend them—if one method for a similar problem didn’t work, another would, and so on.

Such foundational skills were solid to the point of leaving one speechless, yet somehow, when it came to exams, he never hit the mark, and there was no... no, that wasn’t quite true...

"Alright, alright, I got this problem," Yan Fei interrupted An Changhe’s explanation. "I want to ask you something. Why do you do so poorly on tests?"

"Don’t even mention it," An Changhe was full of melancholy. "As soon as it’s exam time, my heart starts racing. Standing outside the examination room before even entering, I start sweating. Once inside, I can’t wipe the sweat off my palms, even with a towel. What can I do?"

"Is it because you put too much pressure on yourself?" Yan Fei asked bluntly. "Are you worried about not getting in, letting your family down, being unable to face people back home, thinking you can’t do anything other than study, and if you don’t do well, you’re done for?"

An Changhe hung his head in hesitation before responding, "Yeah! What else can I do in my current situation besides getting into a good school? Some of my classmates who took the college entrance exam for the first time are now teaching at other high schools. Those who didn’t go to school have kids old enough to run errands. If I don’t get in..."

"Not getting in is no big deal," Yan Fei cut him off. "At least you have the strength for labor. Are you afraid of getting dirty or tired? Would you do a job that can support your parents and, later on, a wife and kids?"

"Are you saying?" An Changhe lifted his head, puzzled and somewhat hopeful.

"Come work at my farm!" Yan Fei said cheerfully. "You’ve heard about the pay and treatment for my workers, right? As long as you’re willing, you can work as hard as you’re able. I won’t let you struggle in life. We have so many classmates, and although I can’t help them all, we’re desk mates. I only have one or two desk mates a year, and even if they all came, I could make arrangements."

"Really?" Although he had already guessed, when Yan Fei confirmed it, An Changhe couldn’t help but ask again.

"Truer than gold," Yan Fei looked up to see the teacher walking toward the podium and quickly lowered his voice. "After the college entrance exam, we’ll check our scores together. If you don’t get in, then you come work on my farm."

"You’ve been studying for years now, retaking exams is pointless. Working at the farm and studying might be better than just memorizing books in school. We even have college graduates at the farm now. Just yesterday, another recent grad joined us!"

"But if you get into a good university, your future is bright! If that happens, just forget what I said, okay?"

"Deal!" An Changhe banged his head on the desk in agreement with Yan Fei, nodding so vigorously he accidentally thudded his chin on the table.

Classmates nearby, drawn by the noise and looking their way, noticed something different about An Changhe, who was sitting up straight. It was hard for the young students to pinpoint, but they felt it—An Changhe seemed different, somehow. Specifically, the usual stoop of his back was gone, and there was something... lively about his face!?

If someone feels trapped with no way out, they may muster 200% energy in desperation. But those with weaker mental strength might crumble under such pressure. However, given an alternative, even they can become exceptionally strong.

An Changhe felt like he only had one path and was crushed by the reality of failing the university entrance exams year after year. Now, it wasn’t just standing outside the exam hall that made him sweat; even thinking about the exams kept him from eating and sleeping well.

Helping others is truly a source of joy. Seeing An Changhe revitalized like a youth reborn brought joy to Yan Fei’s heart. He thought that if An Changhe could let go of his mental burdens and perform as he usually did on exams, then attending an average university was totally feasible—at least, if it were his own goal, getting into a school like Agricultural University was almost a sure thing.

And even if there were surprises, there was no need to worry. With his solid exam experience, he could always take the exam again, or perhaps tutor others at the farm, help them attend adult education correspondence courses, and get a diploma, which would sound more impressive when mentioned.

He had intended to diligently attend all four classes, but right after the first class ended, a call came from the farm: Chairman Dong, from the Yellow Cattle Association, had arrived.

Yan Fei had to pack up his things and head back to the farm.

Upon seeing Yan Fei, Chairman Dong apologized profusely: "I was planning to check on the Yellow Cattle festival preparations at West Hillock, and since it wasn’t far, I thought I’d stop by to see you and discuss some things. I told them not to disturb your classes, but they insisted on calling you back here..."

Yan Fei replied with a gracious smile, "I’m so sorry, going to school can happen anytime, but a visit from Chairman Dong is rare. What’s the matter? Is there a new plan?"

"Didn’t we agree not to let the judges participate in the selection before? After discussing it, we felt that wasn’t quite right. If we kept our best hidden, outsiders might think that’s all Wan City’s Yellow Cattle had to offer! We talked it over again and agreed it’s best if everyone participates. We need to promote Wan City’s Yellow Cattle well and not miss out on the bigger picture for some minor benefits."
