Chapter 1362: Chapter 663: Laboratory 2 People
On the highway from Wan City to Provincial City, a black Mercedes Benz S600 sped along like a fish swimming through the traffic.
The national highway, just after the New Year’s celebration, was still quite busy. However, Yan Fei, driving the Mercedes, relied on his sharp eyes and quick reactions to overtake other cars effortlessly.
In the back seat of the car sat three top students from the Old Xu’s Family in Sancha River Township. Riding shotgun was a reluctant Liu JinXue—who believed that his trip to the Provincial City served only to aid and abet Yan Sanfen’s ambitions to break into the academic community.
Xu Xiaoyan looked at Yan Fei driving carelessly and couldn’t help but mutter softly, "Focus on driving, don’t look around. Everyone’s safety depends on you!"
The others in the car laughed quietly, and Yan Fei just grinned, keeping his eyes straight and bragging to his wife, "There’s no restaurant like this back in our town, I definitely played a part in this."
Although the weather had warmed up after the New Year, the temperature was still not high. Yet on both sides of the road, some waitresses in the restaurants looked completely unafraid of the cold, either standing or sitting by the restaurant doors or behind the glass doors, right by the roadside.
Naturally, these waitresses who had come out to work were from families in difficult circumstances. And, the restaurant owners were probably stingy, letting them wear summer-like clothes in such weather without bothering to provide them with thicker clothing.
Of course, everyone in the car understood the situation, which was why Xu Xiaoyan hadn’t uttered a word about Yan Fei’s overtaking all this time but spoke up as soon as he glanced at the roadside.
With the economy improving, such sights had become increasingly common. Even some small towns and counties were starting to set up karaoke rooms—essentially installing a set of karaoke equipment in a few concealed rooms within a restaurant. Of course, there had to be hostesses, and whether or not singing happened inside was something both the diners and the restaurant owners were well aware of.
The economy in Sancha River Township was relatively good in the area, and some people had thought about getting into similar ventures. However, they eventually dropped the idea.
What Yan Fei said was true, those who thought about getting into it eventually decided against it, and it really did have a lot to do with him.
Originally, Zhou Dalian wanted to set up such operations in a roadside restaurant and, fearing Yan Fei’s disapproval, came to feel him out. As expected, he received nothing but contempt from Yan Fei, who argued that relying on legitimate, quality, and affordable products had been hard to establish and asked if it made sense to throw that away for some dubious dealings. Besides, Zhou was currently serving as a consultant in a township office and might move up the ranks in the system; engaging in such activities would only tarnish his name.
Since Zhou Dalian had come to ask, he had already felt that Yan Fei would disapprove. Thus, he cleverly proposed an alternative plan—he wanted to set up a new restaurant by the road leading to Tanghe County.
It was a legitimate business, and Yan Fei had no objections. As for potential competition with Fifth Brother’s business, Fifth Brother didn’t mind. Recently, Dapanji had become popular, and Fifth Brother had already leased a new restaurant to sell it—these local trends came and went, and riding the wave wouldn’t last too long, but making quick money for two or three years was feasible.
This itself wasn’t much of an issue, but Zhou Dalian’s gang, upset over missing out on "benefits," used Zhou’s name to announce that, in order to maintain the town’s atmosphere, no one should indulge in messy ventures.
When Zhou Dalian spoke up, everyone knew who backed him, so those who still wanted to fool around thought it over and had to give up the idea.
Yan Fei spoke casually, seeing that no one else responded, he added, "It’ll probably be noon by the time we get there. There’s still time. If you’re tired, rest up for a bit."
Xu Xing didn’t respond, but Xu Yue chimed in, "Didn’t you say Bai Xiaobin is going to meet you? Should you call him?"
The first girl of Xu family said, "It’s fine, we can talk about it when we’re close. We have plenty of time!"
Leaving from Sancha River, they had to pass through two counties to reach this national highway. Along the way, they passed through village after village and even a county town. Although the distance wasn’t too far, they couldn’t drive very fast.
After the lively conversation in the car died down, everyone lost the mood to talk.
Just then, Yan Fei’s phone rang, and Xu Xiaoyan quickly answered it. Before she could speak, she heard Lin Xiu Mei’s complaints, "Xiao Fei, you rascal, can’t you teach your brother something good..."
Xu Xiaoyan was a bit embarrassed, "Yan Xiaofei is driving. I’ll pass the phone to him later!"
"Oh!" Lin Xiu Mei felt a bit awkward upon hearing it was her prospective daughter-in-law answering. "Never mind, don’t bother him. I just wanted to talk to Xiao Fei about something. Xiaochao got into some trouble at school."
"What happened?" Xu Xiaoyan was quite concerned when she heard Xiaochao had issues at school. "Is Xiaochao alright?"
"He wishes it was nothing, but that’s not up to him. His father gave him a beating, and he’s reflecting on his mistakes now," Lin Xiu Mei said irritably.
"What could Xiaochao have possibly done wrong?" Xu Xiaoyan was immediately reassured when she heard this—it was just a primary school student, how serious could his mistakes be?
Lin Xiu Mei got even more annoyed when she heard this, "You don’t understand, this kid is infuriating. A few days ago, he came home saying he became the class monitor. Uncle Hai and I were quite happy. But today when we met his teacher, we found out the kid had distributed beef jerky packets among his classmates asking them to support him as class monitor. I can’t understand where such a small child learned these tricks!"
