Chapter 1355: Chapter 660 Instant Messaging Detective Story
"Come on, Brother Niu, let’s have another round!" Heizi enthusiastically called out to Old Niu.
Old Niu wasn’t shy about it, "Let’s drink. Just don’t let Shuangxi drink anymore; he’s still got to drive me."
Everyone at the table nodded in agreement, "No problem, as long as Shuangxi brother doesn’t mind."
The reason everyone was so understanding was because just before eating, they heard some not-so-good news. In Tanghe County, a big boss of a pesticide and seed wholesale business, on his way home after visiting relatives, had gotten into a car accident because he was driving drunk, and had gone off to join Yama to continue the New Year celebrations.
The incident had just happened that morning, and Yan Fei had just stood up with Old Niu, ready to eat, when he received a phone call from Laowu, who repeatedly insisted you can’t drink and drive.
And before they started eating at the dinner table, Old Niu’s wife also called, talking about the same incident for quite some time, also to tell him not to drive after drinking.
Isn’t it said that people sometimes have to learn their lessons the hard way?
Everyone knows that drinking and driving is bad, but it always takes an accident for people to really take it seriously. This wasn’t the first time; however, when an accident happens, it always leaves a lasting impression for a while. But after some time passes, people forget again.
But Old Niu was rather cautious. Now, during the New Year, he always had a driver with him—although whether the driver is there for driving or for blocking drinks, that depends on the situation. At least hearing about someone else’s accident reminded him not to let the driver drink.
While their group was lively and noisy, Yan Fei was focused on eating. Halfway through his meal, he stood up: "Brother Niu, keep drinking, I’m going to check on Liu, that guy. We have to call him even for eating; he has no initiative at all."
"What are you saying about me?" Liu JinXue just happened to walk in.
"Talking about you not coming to eat without someone fetching you, no initiative at all. Did I say something wrong?" Yan Fei didn’t even glance at him and just sat back down. Whoever he’s talking about shows up—he’s not surprised at all. I’m saying it for you to hear, if you didn’t come I wouldn’t even mention it!
Liu JinXue, feeling guilty, played the silent part, grabbed a pair of unused chopsticks from the table, and started eating. After a few bites, he remembered something important, "That magazine I was going to select for you, I’ve already started choosing. After we eat, I’ll pick a few more, then my task will be complete."
"That quick?" Old Niu’s hand holding his drink paused. "But that’s five hundred yuan! What magazines have you chosen?"
Liu JinXue smiled proudly, "The internet’s too slow, so for now, I’ve chosen a few that are considered top international journals. I asked around, we can subscribe to them here."
"How much does each cost?" Old Niu was curious.
"They’re not expensive, none over twenty yuan each." Liu JinXue took a deep breath and added, "It’s just that some of them are priced in pounds or dollars."
Old Niu paused, possibly recalling the disagreement between Liu JinXue and Yan Fei from earlier and threw him a line, "That’s ruthless!"
Indeed, it was ruthless. If a magazine cost ten pounds, that would equate to around one hundred and thirty or forty yuan in China’s currency. By that calculation, Boss Yan’s few thousand yuan wouldn’t last long.
Yan Fei was also stunned for a moment: "If it’s ordered, so be it! If the money’s not enough, ask me for more."
Knowing some cutting-edge technology always has its benefits, even if it’s not immediately useful, at least you can get an idea of the direction of future developments—even if unwillingly, you have to admit that there is indeed a gap in the field of scientific research.
Seeing Yan Fei so magnanimous, Liu JinXue felt somewhat embarrassed and explained, "Some of them are indeed a bit more advanced. When the magazines arrive, you’ll see—there are two with the same name, one is our own, and one is from Britain..."
"Just eat your food," Yan Fei said with a smile. "As long as you think it’s useful, go ahead and subscribe. Even a little bit of information could help us make back the money."
Liu JinXue was rarely so brazen, and now that Yan Fei was being so easygoing, he began to regret it even more, adding, "How about I first try to borrow a few and check them out..."
"It’s fine to borrow them for a look," Yan Fei said. "But this afternoon, go ahead and subscribe first. The sooner we subscribe, the sooner we get the journals. We can’t access the past issues, so if we can borrow them, that’s good too. Easy to borrow?"
"I’ll try!" Even though Boss Yan was generous, at this moment Liu JinXue dared not promise anything. Those journals, if available, are usually in major laboratories and are mostly owned by public institutions; borrowing them is quite difficult.
"Don’t worry about it. If you can borrow them, great, if not, forget it," Yan Fei said with a smile. "In a few days, when I take Xiao Xing to school, I’ll ask around at the Agricultural University. Now hurry up and eat!"
Observing Old Niu and Heizi still waiting to drink, Yan Fei finished his meal in a few bites, put down his bowl, and stood up: "You guys drink up, I’m off to the office."
Wine drinking didn’t usually involve Boss Yan. As long as the guests knew him well, they’d just toast to him courteously every now and then; no one wanted to keep him drinking. So him sitting at the table was truly boring—experts are all as lonely as snow!
Upon reaching the office, he didn’t feel like continuing his writing—there wasn’t much left to write. So many were busy in the world of dinosaurs, and for him, it was a matter of a few moments.
He turned on the computer, ready to browse the news. Out of habit, he opened a string of web pages and sorted through his own articles once more, before beginning to browse properly.
