Chapter 125: Chapter 2 Bought for 100_1
As soon as the wheat busy holiday was over and only two days of school had resumed, Yan Fei happened to have a biology lesson one afternoon. He usually paid serious attention to biology courses. After all, he had first learned about dinosaurs from his primary school natural science textbooks.
The content the teacher covered was a standard lecture from the textbook, so Yan Fei grew impatient after a while and idly flipped through his biology textbook. Suddenly, as he was flipping, something caught his eye.
It was a section about the history of biological evolution, and there were some illustrations, enumerating some plants and animals known as the "living fossils" on Earth.
He was familiar with the ginkgo tree described, in fact, there was a centuries-old ginkgo tree not far from the Sancha River town, requiring four or five students holding hands to circle it fully, everyone in town was aware of it.
What Yan Fei was looking at was another species.
In the picture was clear stream water, and lying upon the river pebbles under the stream was something with black chubby body, short limbs, with hands-like claws, a tail resembling a magnified tadpole. It seemed like a fish but not quite, even its name was fish-related.
Indeed, it was named ’giant salamander’ because its cry sounded like a baby’s cry.
Yan Fei stared at it because the more he looked at it, the more familiar it seemed. However, where he saw it was different from the environment described in the book. The book noted that this creature loved to inhabit streams, but he saw it in lake water.
That’s right, it was the small lake on Toad Island.
Because of the sarcosuchus in the big lake on Cow Breeding Island, Yan Fei was cautious about the small lake on Toad Island and had only observed it from the side. Back then, he saw dark shadows lying in the shallow water near the lake. If he wasn’t mistaken, they looked similar to this ’giant salamander’.
However, those on Toad Island were bigger, even though Yan Fei didn’t get a detailed look at them, he was sure they were not as small as those described in the book.
As for the rest, Yan Fei didn’t bother to check; he was fixed on those with extremely high medicinal and nutritional value. He hardly cared for the descriptions of their aggressive behaviour—could they be more ferocious than the sarcosuchus?
With this new discovery, Yan Fei felt restless. As soon as school was over, he ran home.
Even though his home had been cleaned in the past two days, an unoccupied house had begun to show clear signs of decay.
Yan Fei didn’t mind. He closed the door and headed straight to Toad Island. Then, he lay on a tree branch hanging over the lake, staring at a shadow beneath. The more he watched, the more convinced he was that the creature in the lake resembled the giant salamander.
Of course, there would still be differences, but they didn’t seem significant. Apart from the size, observing from the appearance, it was pretty much the same.
He’d just have to wait for a spare moment to catch one and study it properly. He was busy now, so it’d have to wait.
Since he’d returned to school, he had forgotten something—he needed to pay the salaries of the workers at the cattle farm. He needed to return home early.
"Here’s a hundred yuan, your salary!" When Yan Fei was finished giving out the money, he thought for a moment and gave another note to Heizi.
"Do I also have one?" Heizi was obviously surprised, but quickly changed his tune. "Why only one hundred yuan?"
Wasn’t that right? Even Old Cheng who Yan Fei gave fifty yuan, Lin Yumei who received more than two hundred yuan, and Ma Chao who got four hundred yuan. Heizi had been drooling when he saw others get their money earlier.
"Didn’t you hear earlier? Besides, you haven’t worked for a full month. How much work do you do every day?" Yan Fei gave him a stern look, this guy wouldn’t be grateful no matter how much you gave him.
Actually, Yan Fei was wrong. Heizi was not only grateful, he was so excited that he didn’t know what to do, only that he wouldn’t admit his defeat. He needed to say something to hide his excitement.
This guy didn’t have a proper job in life; it was false to say he had never seen money before. He usually squeezed a bit from his brother and parents, especially when he gambled, he would steal money from home.
But he had never earned money through his own efforts. This was the first time he had received money earned through his own hard work. His heart was pounding, he had never held such solid money before!
Ordinarily, he would ask people for money with a thick face, with no justified cause and even flattering them, only getting five or ten yuan at most each time which made him happy for a long time when receiving twenty. It was needless to say that he would steal money from his house, thinking that he could secretly return it after winning a gamble. But then, when he began to lose, he simply gave up.
That money didn’t feel real at all. Even though he wasn’t well educated and had quite a few twisted and evil ideas, he couldn’t express the complexity of his feelings at the moment.
Observing Lin Yumei, who silently fed chickens and pigs, cooked food, checked feed every day, and Ma Chao who did everything and even helped with brewing, they earned several hundred yuan a month. Even Old Lin who roamed around the farm all day, planting vegetables and flowers, and still made money. He certainly envied them. It’s simply that he was forced to stay there and deep down, he hated working, so it was only normal for him to slack off and cheat.
Now that he benefited from it, he began to harbour his own thoughts.
Yan Fei didn’t know what he was thinking. Anyway, once the money was distributed, it was out of his hands. He decided to take out his brewed alcohol, intending to share with everyone but Ma Chao refused it outright. After much persuasion, he agreed to store it at the cattle farm, but he would only have a small drink each day.
After distributing the alcohol, he returned to his room to weigh if he could catch a super giant salamander in the evening.
Since this species still exists today, catching one for everyone to taste wouldn’t be bad. As for animal conservation, could they conserve animals in his dinosaur world?
Everyone in the farm was familiar now. They could just eat it quietly and there was no need to discuss where it came from. No one in the farm would ask him where the occasional stew came from, and he wouldn’t bother to explain anyway.
As he was ruminating, he heard sound from outside the door. He opened the door to see Heizi sneaking in.
Yan Fei kicked off the dogs following behind and turned to ask him, "What are you doing?"
Heizi wasn’t bothered by his stern face and grinned, "Well, Brother Fei, if I worked diligently, how much would you pay me a month? I’m not asking for as much as Brother Chao, just as much as that woman who cooks, what do you think?"
Yan Fei didn’t want to argue, this guy was summed up in one word: cheap. He skived off work all the time, but didn’t do much less work compared to if he worked honestly and earnestly without being scolded or beaten. He referred to Lin Yumei, the woman who cooked everyday, without even giving her an appropriate title, just ’Hey, hey, hey’.
"The farm can’t employ so many people. In a few days, your family will let you get lost. Why should I pay you a salary?" Yan Fei replied irritably.
"No!" If Heizi wasn’t cheap, Yan Fei wouldn’t have been rude to him. Ignoring Yan Fei’s stern face, he urged on, "I won’t go back, I’m prepared to shovel cattle dung here. As long as you pay me the same as that woman, I’d do any work."
Actually, now the farm indeed couldn’t use so many people. The task of brewing wine didn’t take much time, only requiring some occasional supervision. With only a dozen cows, a few pigs, and a bunch of chicks, what work could there be? This guy was probably making this offer because he saw there wasn’t much work there. If it were actually tiring, he would probably run away!
So Yan Fei didn’t bother to give this guy a chance to reply, drove him out of the house immediately.
