Chapter 1212: Chapter 605 205_2

After another round at the construction site with Lin Haihu, Zhang Kun looked over a few nearly completed projects and got his hands on fresh material. Satisfied, he made his way back to the cattle farm.

Yan Fei had just finished up his work when he saw Zhang Kun approaching and greeted him with a smile, "What happened? I saw you earlier but you didn’t say a word. Is there something the matter?"

Zhang Kun, having run all over the place and not the least bit embarrassed about sneaking in earlier, explained, "Well, there was a leader present, right? This leader today doesn’t like to make a fuss and didn’t even want us reporters following. If I’d let him know I was there, and if he got displeased, that would be too much for me to handle."

Yan Fei smiled, opened a drawer, and took out two hundred and fifty bucks. "My cousin is a bit of a loose cannon; don’t follow his silly antics. Take this money. You coming over to get us a news spot is already promoting our business. It wouldn’t be right to have you exert effort and pay out of your own pocket; I’d feel too embarrassed to ask for your help in the future!"

Zhang Kun wasn’t aware Yan Fei had leaders to entertain today and worried that something unpredictable might happen. He’d been keeping an eye on everything around the farm. With his keen ears, it was hard for anything to escape his notice.

But at that moment, Zhang Kun wasn’t concerned about how Yan Fei knew what had happened; he kept declining, "No, no, no, I think he is quite interesting. Besides, I get a subsidy for this trip, and it’s only right that I pay for the information fee. Please don’t insist, or I’ll be too embarrassed to come back next time!"

Yan Fei, who never liked to dither, promptly pocketed the money, smiling, "Alright, then how about you take two bottles of liquor with you when you leave, as a little gesture from me."

Not bad at all.

Zhang Kun readily accepted with a smile. As a reporter often visiting places for interviews, getting a couple of bottles of liquor was nothing; some even got red envelopes when covering businesses!

After some small talk, Zhang Kun brought up an idea, "Have you ever considered advertising? The rates are quite affordable these days. It could be good PR for your farm too, right?"

"You journalists now have to moonlight as ad salespeople too?" Yan Fei quipped, but pondered for a moment. "What on my farm could I possibly advertise? Other than beef jerky, there’s nothing else, right?"

"Beef jerky is great!" Zhang Kun encouraged him. "These days everything is advertised. With enough exposure, anything can become a brand name. Jerky is no exception. As long as you’re willing, there’s nothing that can’t be advertised."

Yan Fei became contemplative. "That’s not an impossibility..."

In three months, he would need to provide for three additional restaurants, which meant slaughtering more cattle and thus increasing the production of beef jerky. It might indeed be worthwhile to run a small ad now.

Seeing Yan Fei nod, Zhang Kun immediately took out some papers and started to explain, "Each page has a different price, as you can see. I’ve quoted the lowest prices here. As journalists, we’re not really in the ad department, and we don’t rely on commissions to make a living. It’s just about leveraging connections—you know what I mean, no need to harp on that, haha..."

"Mm-hmm," Yan nodded, examining the papers for a bit and then decided, "Alright, this will do! I don’t need the very best option, nor do I want the cheapest one that wouldn’t make a difference. This is good enough—at twenty thousand a week, it’s affordable."

Zhang Kun acted swiftly, "Okay, we can start next week. You check out the results then. If it works, give me a call. If not... Well, I don’t need to say more. I’ll just make more trips this way in the future, see if I can dig up more news."

Yan Fei burst into laughter, "Okay! You can just take the money back with you when you go; that’ll save us the trouble. As for how to advertise, that’s your department’s issue; I’ll stay out of it!"

Zhang Kun also laughed, "That’s for the ad department to worry about. If they don’t do it right, we can scold them together later!"

This trip was indeed worthwhile.

Zhang Kun was still beaming by the time he returned to the city newspaper office.

With the article he had hastily prepared on the way, he handed it over to one of the more familiar editors. The editor found it quite extraordinary, "Is this for real? Our local cattle are black?"

Zhang Kun was proud, "Isn’t there a photo? How could it be fake?"

"Deal!" The editor made an immediate decision. "This is perfect, just as the leaders have come down to inspect our cattle. This is timely news."

Zhang Kun then presented another article, "There’s something else. When I went there, the leaders were just inspecting that cattle farm. I also sneakily took a few photos from the sidelines, look at this..."

"We haven’t gotten the word from above yet, so let’s hold on to this until we’re notified," the editor decided after a brief review of the article Zhang Kun had written.

"That works too!" Zhang Kun then took out twenty thousand bucks and a few packs of beef jerky. "I also managed to secure some ad space on the side, boss. Does that mean my bonus will go up this month? These are samples for advertising purposes; I’ve taken more than I needed, so you should try some too!"

The editor laughed, "You’re doing well for yourself! What are you giving me the money for? Take it to the ad department! Stop worrying about your bonus; keep this up, and you might just land the vacant deputy position here in a few days!"

Zhang Kun was instantly excited, and in his eagerness, he even blurted out some unconfirmed news, "I also found out that Boss Yan is planning to acquire local apple orchards..."
