Chapter 121: Chapter 62: Going to Eat Noodles_1
"I already bought it for you, I’ve paid for it. If you don’t want it, I’ll have to throw it away!" Yan Fei said, feeling quite pleased. He had been roaming the streets all morning and it was a relief to finally rid himself of his resentment.
"You..." Xu Xiaoyan’s face turned red immediately.
"Oh come on, it’s a gift from Yan Fei! Look at your clothes, they really need to be replaced. Besides, I wish someone would buy me new clothes. Oh, also, he bought this too. Look how well it matches these shoes..." Ji Yunyun quickly stepped in to persuade her. Ji Yunyun, a clever girl, knew Xu Xiaoyan might refuse the gifts. Hence, she made Xu Xiaoyan try them on before paying for them herself when Xu Xiaoyan wasn’t looking.
"How much did it all cost?" Xu Xiaoyan was on the verge of tears. "Why are you spending money so recklessly? If others find out, I... I..."
"It’s bought, it’s bought! However much it costs, we can earn back. It’s not as if we can’t make money." Yan Fei was nonchalant. Well, he’d already made the purchases, what could he do now?
"No, I’m going to return everything. You’re not allowed to spend money like this!" Xu Xiaoyan stomped her foot and made up her mind.
"You are not allowed to return them!" Yan Fei became a bit anxious. With all the persuading that Ji Yunyun had already done, and this girl was still so adamant about not accepting the gifts–was she asking for trouble? "Everything’s been bought, whether you want them or not, you have to take them."
Feeling his tone was a bit harsh; he quickly changed it and said, "Look, it would be awful to return them after buying them home, wouldn’t it? Your friend spent half her day shopping with you, don’t you feel a bit guilty?"
"Exactly, exactly, I borrowed my mother’s relationship to buy these for you, and they gave us the wholesale price because of that. If we return them, how will I ever have the guts to sell things here? Are you trying to ruin my business?" Ji Yunyun put on a pitiful look and joined in with the persuasion.
In the end, Xu Xiaoyan accepted the clothes, albeit very reluctantly. It was only when she was persuaded by Ji Yunyun to put on the new clothes and shoes that she stopped complaining.
"Clothes make the man. Wearing new clothes lifts one’s spirit." While Xu Xiaoyan was changing, Ji Yunyun, claiming credit for the successful purchase, directed Yan Fei to buy a few orders of fried jelly to celebrate. Yan Fei was more than willing to oblige. When he returned, he was delighted to see Xu Xiaoyan dressed in her new clothes.
"See, I told you my taste is more on point. With these clothes on, Xiao Xingxing looks like a new person." Ji Yunyun said delightfully while poking at the jelly with her chopsticks.
"It’s all your doing. You definitely wanted to sell clothes. You instigated Yan Fei to buy them, didn’t you?" Xu Xiaoyan said, her face flushing with a semblance of anger, but her eyes betrayed her joy.
"Oh my, someone’s ungrateful! It was your Hero Yan who asked me for help, okay? Don’t blame the wrong person!" Ji Yunyun pouted. "Let me tell you, don’t mess with me, or I will tell Hero Yan that... you know... "
"What?" Yan Fei was eating jelly when he overheard the conversation. He asked casually and then became lost in thought. "How come your jelly here tastes strange? It doesn’t look like it’s made from green beans. Plus, the taste is a bit off, isn’t it?"
"Of course. The jelly sold here in the city is not made of pure green beans. They just deceive those who don’t know better. If you really want the good stuff, you need to travel far. I am so hungry that I would die, and my mother isn’t back yet, so I can’t leave. That’s why I’m just making do with this!" Ji Yunyun replied while digging into her jelly. After finishing, she shifted gears. "What do you find so appealing about green beans jelly anyway? I prefer steamed white buns, especially the really really big ones... "
"Ji Yunyun, are you asking for trouble?" Yan Fei was still wondering why she thought bigger buns were better when he saw Xu Xiaoyan jump to her feet. Her face was beet red, and she was glaring fiercely at Ji Yunyun.
"Alright, alright, I’ll shut up. Don’t blame me for it later. Remember, if you cross me again, I’ll go tell someone all about it!" Ji Yunyun giggled, unafraid.
"Hmph!" Xu Xiaoyan huffed, plopped back down and furiously jabbed at her jelly with her chopsticks. Stealthily sneaking glances at Yan Fei while she did so, she saw him, convinced that the girls’ squabble wasn’t serious, was eating like a pig, paying no attention to them at all.
They hadn’t even finished the jelly before Ji Yunyun’s mother arrived to relieve her, so she could go eat. The three of them ended up going to get a meal together.
As for the jelly, neither of the girls ate much. They had just stopped eating.
"Where should we go eat?" The moment they walked out the door, all three asked the question simultaneously, making them all burst into laughter.
After they had laughed themselves out, Ji Yunyun said, "Xiao Xingxing decides, we will do whatever you say."
Xu Xiaoyan looked bewildered: "I’ve never eaten out before; I don’t know anything about it!"
"Then Hero Yan decides. I want to eat at a fancy place today, and you’re treating! Keep in mind, it has to be at least five yuan!" Ji Yunyun turned to Yan Fei and declared.
"Me?" Yan Fei was lost! But then he thought about it and remembered he did indeed know somebody who ran a restaurant. "Um, do you know the beef restaurant diagonal from the bus station? Would you want to eat there?"
"You’re not joking, are you? Are you referring to the place called Laowu Beef Restaurant?" Ji Yunyun asked in astonishment.
"Right, you know the place too? Great! We are going there then!" Yan Fei said, glad that he’d made the right choice when he heard she was familiar with the place.
"So... So ... You know it too?" Ji Yunyun stuttered, finally managing to get the question out.
"Yep, I used to sell wild rabbits there. Haven’t been there in a while though. It will be nice to check it out." Yan Fei said in surprise, wondering why Ji Yunyun was making a fuss over a simple restaurant.
"Let’s do that, then. Since it’s run by someone you know, we won’t be overcharged!" Once Xu Xiaoyan understood that they both knew the restaurant, she decided it was the best option.
"Alright, then. Today, I am going to risk it all," Ji Yunyun said gritting her teeth, her eyes showing resolve.
Xu Xiaoyan, now wearing her new shoes, which were slightly taller than she was used to, seemed completely unsure of how to walk. This made Ji Yunyun cover her stomach and lament, "Xiao Xingxing, are you planning to starve me to save money for Yan Fei?"
Having donned new shoes, Xu Xiaoyan unexpectedly didn’t retort. She had her hands full dealing with the new shoes. She carefully navigated her way through the streets. Since it wasn’t appropriate to hold onto Yan Fei for support on the street, she held onto Ji Yunyun’s shoulder and practically forgot how to put one foot in front of the other.
They finally meandered their way to the beef restaurant. By now, the jelly they had earlier had probably been digested completely, leaving both girls terribly hungry.
It’s no wonder they were so famished. They had waited at Ji Yunyun’s shop for a long time and then lingered on the way here. Now, the restaurant’s customers had already left, and the place had been tidied up and was ready to close.
Seeing Yan Fei, Fifth Brother was still as welcoming as ever. Especially when he saw that Yan Fei had brought two girls to dine, he began talking nonsense while slightly tipsy. He rambled on about anything and everything, relevant or not, right up until Fifth Sister-in-law scolded and pushed him to the backyard to sleep it off, while he was still calling out for Yan Fei to join him for a drink.
