Chapter 1193: Chapter 600 Yan Fei’s Speech: A Pack of Lies
"You, you, you—go wait in the conference room. You’re dressed like a punk; don’t scare the leaders coming from above..." Secretary Niu teased, pointing at a big fellow and laughing.
A chorus of laughter erupted from the surrounding people, and the big fellow pointed at just laughed it off and dutifully left.
They had just finished eating and were now selecting a few cattle farming representatives to welcome the visiting inspection team.
When choosing people, one consideration was the number of cattle they raised. Those who didn’t have many cattle to boast of simply didn’t need to follow; waiting in the conference room would suffice. Additionally, those of poor appearance or questionable quality were also unnecessary, for fear that a handshake and a few words could lead to a stream of poor speech, complete with all its ’tails,’ which would be inappropriate.
This big fellow had probably been a troublemaker in the past. Now that he was thriving as a cattle farmer, he still couldn’t shed his old habits. The huge gold chain around his neck looked like a dog’s leash, and if it weren’t for the current setting, one would certainly mistake him for a gang leader.
However, no matter how awesome he was locally, he now had to follow orders. Besides, Secretary Niu’s casual way of speaking was something these people took well to.
Secretary Niu was about to speak again when he suddenly spotted Yan Fei hiding in the crowd behind, and immediately called out, "Yan Fei, Yan Fei, come over here. A young guy like you has such great energy; your presence is just right for the front. Come here, come here..."
Yan Fei, having no choice, obediently stepped forward.
Secretary Niu selected a few more with appropriate cattle farming scale and a more decent appearance for that day and led them to meet the visitors. Actually, even if they looked good, they wouldn’t be at the front anyway. They were there just to make up the numbers and show a warm and welcoming attitude.
In fact, prior to this, there was another arrangement, which was to select a few representatives to give speeches. Not being able to speak was not a problem; this was Tanghe County, and if anything was abundant, it wasn’t a lack of writers. A few were easily called upon, and with simple input from the representatives, they could quickly write a moving and eloquent speech report.
Of course, the speakers had to be literate—I mean, it’s funny, right? Being cattle magnates and not being able to read? Actually, there really were some. Of course, to say they couldn’t read at all would be an exaggeration; at least they knew how to write and recognize their own names. And even if they couldn’t read, there was no need to fear ridicule from those present; nobody would laugh, as nobody there had much higher cultural levels themselves.
Initially, Yan Fei was also scheduled to speak, but being the modest person he was, he noted, "The guests today are all experienced; I’m just a novice young person. There will be many such opportunities in the future, so let’s give this chance to others!"
Many were eager to speak, and with Yan Fei’s firm refusal, Secretary Niu saw this and did not press him further.
All was arranged properly, and all that was left was to wait.
They didn’t have to wait long before several cars drove up, and the leaders at the forefront went forward to meet the guests, with Yan Fei’s group trailing and joining in.
What followed were introductions. The inspection team and the leading officials were certainly the focus. When it came to Yan Fei’s group, it was simply stated, "These are the local cattle farming specialists, and the rest are waiting in the conference room..."
The head of the inspection team was an Assistant Inspector named Meng—his rank wasn’t particularly high, but everyone knew one thing: an official from the Capital was to be respected thrice as much, making their exact rank irrelevant at the moment.
In fact, most of those present, like the group around Yan Fei, couldn’t quite grasp the Assistant Inspector’s rank. They only understood he was a leader from above and that it wouldn’t hurt to show respect, for no one is offended by excessive politeness.
It was supposed to be a simple introduction, but Assistant Meng, seeing Yan Fei, intentionally or unintentionally asked, "Do we have representatives this young?"
The person introducing was momentarily taken aback, then quickly recovered and explained, "This is Yan Fei from Tanghe County, one of our local cattle magnates. Although young, he has a lot of cattle, and he is the one behind the large-scale cattle farming base that’s currently being constructed in our area. His beef has even reached restaurants in Hong Kong, making an outstanding contribution to the development of Wan City’s cattle industry."
Assistant Meng immediately smiled, saying, "Good, good, good, so promising!"
He then stepped forward to extend his hand, "Then I must get to know you first. Let me address you as Little Boss Yan, haha..."
After Yan Fei also shook hands and greeted him, Assistant Meng patted his shoulder, "Seeing such young people involved in the growth of Wan City’s cattle industry, I feel confident that there’s a bright future for us!"
Thus, naturally, as the group moved on, Yan Fei, whether intentionally or not, was separated from the cattle farmers’ delegation and escorted to the front. This elicited envious looks from the other cattle magnates behind him.
It was obvious that if Assistant Meng took notice, there could be good things in store!
With Yan Fei in such a situation, he was like a puppet on strings, guided wherever others indicated. As he moved along, he wondered: was today his lucky day? Why did it feel like he was the protagonist of a TV show or novel, with good fortune at every turn?
