Chapter 1184: Chapter 596: Be Careful What You Say
"Is this the billiards room?" Yan Fei parked the car and followed Jiao Bing and Yang Qian, winding around for about ten minutes, before they arrived in front of a small courtyard.
"This is the place, rest assured, follow us and you won’t have to spend extra money," Yang Qian said nonchalantly as he led the way in.
As soon as they entered, he shouted towards the inside, "Boss, we’re here to play billiards, you got any tables?"
"Yes, yes, yes," a middle-aged woman sitting in the courtyard quickly stood up. "Both tables are free! Play on whichever you want. There aren’t many students having physical education classes today..."
Once the middle-aged woman led them into the room and after a few words of greeting left, Jiao Bing proudly said to Yan Fei, "How about that? It’s hidden, right? Playing here is not only cheap, but also safe from the teachers’ eyes. And they don’t charge by the game here, but by the hour; two bucks for an hour, cheap, right?"
Yan Fei was utterly speechless with these two guys, school had just started, and they hadn’t likely gotten familiar with the school grounds, yet they’d already found these hidden spots for fun outside of school.
To say it was hidden was an understatement, it was literally at a farmer’s house in a village near the school. They had been winding through the village for about ten minutes on narrow paths, and Yan Fei guessed anyone slightly directionally challenged would not find their way out later.
These farmers really lived off the land and water, making their money from the students. Along the way, Yan Fei had seen quite a few ’students having physical education’ — it was just a technical secondary school, how could there be so many physical education classes? They were really just a bunch of study slackers skipping classes. The business owners, not wanting to offend these ’customers’, surely chose nicer words, saying it was for physical education classes.
The village not only had a billiards room but also a video hall; basically, since it was in the village, there were no fees to pay, and everything was very cheap.
Before lunch, Yan Fei had driven the two around the city here and there until he could hear their stomachs grumbling, which was when the two had their fill of fun and started looking for a place to eat.
During the meal, the three of them agreed to go play billiards.
There were plenty of billiards rooms in the city, yet these two were keen on saving money, saying they’d take Yan Fei to a cheaper place, and ended up near their school again.
"Start!" Yang Qian grabbed a cue stick, mimicking the stance of athletes on TV, rubbing a little chalk on the tip of the cue. "Let’s take turns, whoever loses steps down. Don’t say we’re ganging up on you, we’ll let you have one ball..."
Seeing their confident demeanor, Yan Fei seriously doubted whether these two were here to study or to practice billiards skills.
The rules of this billiards game were simple: fifteen balls, whoever scored an odd number first played the odd ones, and the other played the even numbers. The only things to watch were to pocket the black eight ball last, and during the game, make sure the white cue ball didn’t sink.
If someone accidentally pocketed the opponent’s ball, that was just considered good luck for them, and there was no need to remove it.
With such simple rules and only a small table, because a player could keep shooting as long as they pocketed their balls, some skilled players could even finish without letting their opponents have a turn.
However, that was other people. The three of them rarely got to play in Sancha River Township. Back when Yan Fei had no money, nor the daring to face others since the billiards hall charged by the game, they did not welcome such kids—playing sluggishly through an afternoon without finishing a game, it only cost a dime, which any owner would balk at!
Now, though, it seemed Yang Qian and Jiao Bing had practiced here for a couple of days, thinking they had improved, and now brought Yan Fei to show off.
It was a pity they didn’t choose something like a video game, which Yan Fei might genuinely lose at due to unfamiliarity. But with something hands-on like this, Yan Fei was quite confident.
Playing billiards tested one’s visual acuity and control of force. At first, Yan Fei got knocked off the table twice because he was unfamiliar, but later on, Jiao Bing and Yang Qian quit, "No way, you play too fast. We only get to shoot twice, and you finish the game; it’s not fun. Let’s do this, you play against the two of us..."
Yan Fei didn’t mind; the two of them couldn’t stir up any trouble anyway.
Sure enough, it wasn’t long before things heated up in the small room...
"Quick, quick, it’s my turn..."
"Hit that one, shoot the 5, if you miss, it’s my turn to shoot..."
"Number 5 won’t work, I think 9 is better, see how nicely it’s positioned..."
"That’s a 6, be more observant..."
"..."
Yan Fei, having nothing better to do, held his stick and watched Jiao Bing and Yang Qian bicker around the billiard table, relishing their argument. When the two couldn’t resolve it, he would interject, "Hurry up, how much longer till it’s my turn?"
"Don’t rush, watch this, I’ll shoot this one, Xiaobin shoots three, and then it’s your turn..." Yang Qian quickly grabbed the cue stick, pushed Jiao Bing aside, and started aiming like a thief.
At first, it was one shot each in turn among the three, but it wasn’t long before the rules changed again, evolving into Yan Fei shooting one, while each of them took three shots.
And they still weren’t guaranteed a win!
The two of them were thick-faced, upgrading from taking one shot to two, now even taking three in a row without having the heart to say they should take four—here, one ’shot’ didn’t mean just hitting once, but rather continuing to play as long as the balls kept sinking, giving continuous play for each shot.
