Chapter 1174: Chapter 592: If I Take One Step Back, I Lose_3
A few coincidences later, when Sun Sihai finally stood up, the sight was comical—his short-sleeved shirt was patchily covered in gray dust, looking rather amusing. As he bowed with his fists clasped towards the teachers and students present, a few muffled laughs inevitably escaped from the crowd, even the always stern-faced Teacher Sun couldn’t help but crack a slight smile.
After another two candidates had their turn, it was Yan Fei’s moment to perform.
The boxing technique he had been practicing since childhood, especially after adapting it for his regularly surging strength, had become as second nature to him as eating and drinking.
The students couldn’t really tell what was extraordinary about it, they just thought it looked impressive; however, among the judges, an older teacher repeatedly nodded in approval during his performance, appearing quite satisfied.
After about a dozen students, including the time taken for the intervals between performances, the whole demonstration hadn’t even taken an hour.
Then the teachers on stage discussed among themselves in low voices for a while, with several instances of argumentation, after which the teacher with glasses began to announce the list of candidates who had passed the assessment.
In truth, by that time, Yan Fei’s expression had already turned quite unsightly.
Although the hall was quite sizable, Sun Sihai’s soft discussion could not escape Yan Fei’s ears.
Indeed, as the names of the six successful candidates were announced, Yan Fei’s name was not among them—to his great indignation, even the kid performing Tai Chi with small glasses had passed. Was there no justice in the world? It was as if they were deliberately provoking him to lose his temper!
No sooner had the list been completed than Sun Sihai murmured softly, "That’s not right, why isn’t your name there..."
They were all well-versed in martial arts, and it was fairly obvious to anyone who performed well or poorly. Besides, they weren’t fools; everyone could sense something was amiss—even if there was some manipulation at play, surely it shouldn’t be this blatant?
Yan Fei stood up abruptly, "Teacher, I’d like to ask what your judging criteria is? Why didn’t I pass?"
This time the teacher with glasses kept silent, while another middle-aged teacher spoke up, "Student, if you have objections about the assessment results, you can raise them with the authorities later. For now, we are responsible only for making the judgments. That’s all, the assessment is over; everyone, please disperse!"
Yan Fei stepped forward a few paces, "I just want to ask, what are the standards for your judgment?"
The middle-aged teacher grew impatient, "What’s wrong with this student, can’t you understand? As I said, we are only responsible for judging. If you have concerns, you can take them up with the higher-ups..."
"I’m just asking for the judging criteria, what’s the problem with that? Or are you afraid to say it?" Yan Fei said, suppressing his anger.
The news of his examination had spread, not just in Sancha River town but likely in the surrounding countryside—after all, on the construction site, people from several villages worked together.
Everyone assumed that him taking the examination was nothing more than a formality; if he had to go back and tell them he didn’t pass... those were words he simply couldn’t bring himself to speak!
Besides, the blatant cheating in his face and the elimination of his name was not something he could just brush off!
Seeing Yan Fei’s blunt words, Chief Examiner Sun looked him over and said leisurely, "The criteria of our assessment, if you don’t understand, you can ask other teachers for guidance. We have neither the duty nor the obligation to explain it to you on the spot. Given your current attitude, our judgment to fail you is justified—no one could say otherwise."
With that, the teachers began to pack up their things, ready to leave.
Yan Fei was so furious he almost found it funny. He had seen people being unreasonable, but never this unreasonable.
Why am I acting like this? It’s because you deliberately failed me. Now, ironically, you’re pinning it on my attitude. No wonder you were chosen by the sports commission to be the chief examiner; with your ability to twist the truth, you’re unmatched by the average person.
Yan Fei bluntly walked to the doorway, "If you don’t give me a proper explanation today, don’t even think about leaving. Everyone here practices martial arts. I’ll stand right here, and if anyone can pass me and leave, I won’t say another word about today’s matter."
"Student, you’re acting inappropriately. If you fail this year, you can still come back next year. If you make a scene like this, you could be barred from future examinations--then you would truly be unable to participate in any more assessments..." one of the teachers said, trying to reason with him upon seeing his demeanor.
This teacher was the one who had nodded during Yan Fei’s routine, but right now, Yan Fei felt no appreciation for him. Even martial artists lacking backbone was inexcusable. He had overheard the conversation among the teachers earlier, and just because Chief Examiner Sun from the Provincial City had spoken up, this teacher had gone silent.
Remembering that this teacher had spoken up for him earlier, Yan Fei added a few more words, "A routine is a performance, but shouldn’t it also consider practicality? If you think my routine isn’t up to par, then let’s test its practicality. I’m standing right here. If anyone can walk through this door, consider me defeated!"
The teacher’s face showed a hint of reluctance, possibly feeling sorry for this student who had trained well, afraid that he, by challenging these teachers, might lose the opportunity to take part in future examinations. The teacher tried to explain again, "A routine is just a routine; it only looks at the level of your performance, it’s not like what you said—that if a routine fails, then..."
Yan Fei cut him off with a sneer, "All this talk is useless. I don’t accept your judgment."
Looking at the students and teachers who had started to gather around, he sneered again, "I’ll stand right here and now. Everyone in this room, including the winners of the competition, can come and try. If I take a single step, I admit defeat!"
Chief Examiner Sun also sneered, "You, the candidate, what’s your name, Yan Fei? I’ll remember you. If you still wish to participate in these assessments in the future..."
Yan Fei glared at him, "I’ll remember you too. Before you make it impossible for me to take part in future assessments, why don’t you try to make it through this doorway first?"
Chief Examiner Sun’s face turned red with anger, "Fine, fine, fine—I’ve truly never seen a student like you, boasting and disrespecting your elders... Some students, drag him out for me!"
The candidates who had participated in the assessment exhibited no reaction, though the skinny male student wearing glasses seemed to want to step forward, but seeing no one else move, he retracted his step.
However, some of the winners, likely feeling confident in their own abilities or wanting to appease the teachers, started moving towards Yan Fei.
Observing the approaching students, Yan Fei, not wanting to waste his time on them, declared, "Those trying to make a name for themselves should weigh their own capabilities. Once you act, you’re accountable for your life or death!"
With those words, he abruptly turned and punched the wall.
After a booming sound, the falling of bricks could be heard from outside the wall. When Yan Fei retracted his fist, those inside the room could already see the outside...
The sunlight was brilliantly shining through!
