Chapter 1165: Chapter 589 Three-Pats Secretary Novice on the Road_2
As it turns out, the gathering was well worth it. Not only did I get to meet so many seniors, but I also picked up quite a bit of ’new knowledge.’ Even if it’s not immediately useful, there’s at least one thing I can count on—if I’m ever in the area where these seniors are, I can just make a call and surely get a meal with them without any fuss.
But the most valuable piece of advice came at the very end.
When the party was over and everyone was leaving, Wang Jiuming, as the local host, took it upon himself to warn everyone, "Classes have just started today, and there are a lot of people out eating and drinking tonight, so there might be traffic police checking vehicles. Everyone, be careful!"
He was absolutely right. The location of the gathering was in a busy area, and just standing at the hotel entrance, you could see police cars with flashing red lights at the distant intersection.
Leaving immediately was definitely out of the question, so the group stood at the door and chatted away for quite some time, especially around Yan Fei’s ’Mercedes Benz S600 kid.’ Several seniors were eyeing the car with envy and spent a good while talking with Yan Fei about it.
It wasn’t until one senior said, "Alright, it’s getting late. Let our junior brother go home earlier! Everyone should rest too. Don’t keep standing here on the roadside endlessly as if we can’t see each other again!"
Only then did the remaining group officially call it a night. As Yan Fei was about to get into his car, one of the senior sisters who was with Xu Xiaoyan stopped him, "You’ve just been drinking. Why are you driving? The roads aren’t busy now, so just let Xiao Xing drive slowly back. It’ll save you the trouble in case you get caught."
It seemed Miss Xu Xiaoyan had a good time chatting with these senior sisters, as they all knew she had her license and was a new driver.
Yan Fei really hadn’t drunk much, and after chatting for so long, he figured even if there were checks, they wouldn’t detect that he had been drinking—it was just the smell of alcohol on him. Besides, given his tolerance for alcohol, even if he really did drink a few catties, it wouldn’t affect his driving.
But when he looked over, he saw that Miss Xu Xiaoyan was wearing an eager expression, quite out of character. Without further ado, he gave up his seat and let the girl get into the driver’s position—she was probably feeling excited because school had just started, and she had enjoyed the conversation with a few senior sisters, so she was keen to give it a try.
However, due to the excitement, just as she started the car and put it into gear, the engine stalled right there.
A few of the senior brothers and sisters immediately laughed. One senior sister called out, "Don’t be nervous, take your time. There aren’t many cars at night, just drive slowly in first gear. After all, Boss Yan is wealthy and can afford such a car. He won’t mind burning a little extra fuel, right?"
So the girl shifted into first gear and started driving slowly forward. Even from a distance, Yan Fei could still hear bursts of laughter behind him.
As they approached the intersection, Yan Fei quickly suggested, "Turn right, let’s take this road. It’s wide, has few cars, and not many people—perfect for you to practice."
The girl obediently turned the wheel and took the turn.
And that’s when the traffic officer on the other side disagreed, running over and signaling them to stop—showing just how slow they were going, as the officer caught up to them within a couple of steps and nearly stood in front of their car.
Then the officer made a sudden stop and stepped back two paces before catching up with the car that had just stalled after trying to quickly brake. With a hint of anger, he shouted, "What kind of driving is this? Have you been drinking? Running a red light and trying to hit someone?"
Yan Fei got out of the car and repeatedly apologized, "Officer, I’m so sorry. I had a little to drink earlier, so I let her drive. She’s a new driver and got her license not long ago. You came over so suddenly that she panicked and mistaken the gas pedal for the brake, but as you see, we’ve stopped now."
People do judge by appearances, and there’s no denying that.
As Yan Fei apologized and explained, the officer’s anger subsided considerably. Then, when Miss Xu Xiaoyan got out of the car blushing, the officer softened even more upon seeing that the driver was such a pretty young woman.
"Forget about it, since you didn’t hit me," the officer said while pulling out his notebook. "You weren’t driving fast to begin with, or else I couldn’t have run in front of your car. However, running a red light does carry a fine of fifty yuan. And let me see her license, just to make sure she isn’t driving without one!"
Upon hearing this, Miss Xu Xiaoyan quickly handed over her license and explained, "Officer, I really didn’t mean to do it. He was giving me directions and told me to take this road, I saw no one around and made the turn quickly, not realizing the light was red. It’s my first traffic violation; could you possibly not fine me?"
The officer was about to say something when the girl pleaded further, "It’s honestly my first time, I’ve just gotten my license not long ago, and he usually drives. Look at us, we try to follow the rules—he doesn’t drive after drinking, and let me, a newbie, drive slowly in first gear. If not for that, there wouldn’t have been a violation, right? Please, considering it’s our first offense, could you let this one slide?"
Yan Fei had the money ready to pay; to him, it wasn’t worth the trouble over fifty yuan.
But, to his surprise, after a few words from the girl, the officer glanced at the license, considered for a moment, looked at their license plate, and then waved them off, "Okay, okay, I see you’re from out of town and you young people do have a good sense of legal responsibility, knowing not to drive after drinking. I’ll let you off this time, now hurry on your way!"
Actually, this was an unwritten rule in Provincial City’s traffic enforcement—not all unwritten rules are bad, and here in Provincial City, it’s a good one: they are particularly lenient towards out-of-town license plates.
