Chapter 1153: Chapter 585: Back to School_2
So much so that when Yan Fei was about to leave and she was telling him from behind to take it slow on the motorcycle since he had been drinking, Boss Yan felt extremely unaccustomed. He had already ridden the motorcycle out of the courtyard and onto the road, but he couldn’t help turning back for another glance.
Lin Baoguo’s transfer wasn’t something to broadcast widely before the formal notice arrived, and naturally, Yan Fei wouldn’t go spreading the news. Aside from his wife, he hadn’t told anyone else on the farm.
He had intended to keep Director Lin’s secret for just two days until the official notice came, but unexpectedly, this secrecy extended to over half a month.
And so Director Lin was torn, on one hand, he wanted to receive the notice quickly to learn of his new assignment; on the other hand, he wished the notice would come later so he could spend a few more days with his wife and children.
In this day-by-day dilemma, by the time the final notice arrived, his feelings had become incredibly calm.
Yan Fei, on the other hand, was untroubled. It was indeed an ill-timed day. The new director was about to take office that day, and as some people from the town were treating the new director to a welcome dinner, Old Pan called him, but by then, he was unable to attend.
School had started!
Professor He and his wife hadn’t stayed in Sancha River Township for many days before they returned to Provincial City, but Professor Qi stayed there until the school term began.
It was mainly because Professor He and his wife had noticed that Professor Qi’s spirits and complexion were indeed improving day by day in Sancha River, so even after they left, they kept persuading him over the phone. Since Boss Yan’s place was crowded, the longer you could stay, the better — and with Yan Fei sincerely urging him to stay, he ended up staying until school opened.
Now, Yan Fei was driving the Mercedes Benz S600, with his wife and Professor Qi beside him, as well as two future sisters-in-law, speeding toward Provincial City.
Actually, Xu Xiaoyan had advised Yan Fei before they left, pointing out that there were many traffic police in Provincial City and that vehicle inspections were strict on the roads. She suggested he let Old Ou or someone else take the trip to avoid any trouble once in Provincial City.
But Boss Yan, being carefree, said he knew the roads well by now, and if it came down to it, they could just take back roads to avoid a few traffic-heavy intersections. Besides, in case of any trouble, it’s not like there’s no one with a driving license in the car — Xu Xiaoyan’s license had come through, and if push came to shove, she could just drive slowly, and it wouldn’t be a big problem.
Little did they expect things to go awry. Nearing their destination, Yan Fei was startled: "Why are there traffic police at this intersection now?"
Usually, if there was nothing going on, there wouldn’t be vehicle inspections at the intersections. And even if there were traffic police, they mainly targeted large vehicles, unlike now where he saw several traffic police officers at the intersection with a patrol car waiting — it looked very strict.
Xu Xiaoyan worried, "Should we turn around and go back quickly? There’s still heavy traffic ahead..."
"That’s not an option!" Yan Fei immediately rejected this idea. "Turning around now would be a clear sign that we’re up to something. We’ve bluffed our way with the license until here, let’s bluff one more time. If we can get through, we will; if not, we’ll deal with it then. Turning around is not as good as switching places with you and letting you drive!"
Only then did Xu Xiaoyan remember the concern she had voiced earlier. She did have her license, but she had very limited experience driving. In her anxiety, she had forgotten all about it. She remembered only after Yan Fei’s reminder: "That works, pull over and let me drive!"
Yan Fei hesitated again, gesturing for her to consider the traffic ahead and behind: "Look at all these cars; can you handle it?"
Xu Xiaoyan looked ahead and behind. Before she could speak, her second sister, who was in the know, voiced her concern. Xu Xiaoyan could get by on rural roads with less traffic and more room to maneuver slowly, but now, with so many vehicles, it was somewhat worrying, so she said, "Let Yan Fei keep driving! Even if we get stopped by the traffic police, it’s still better than you driving. Suppose you have an accident — it’s much worse!"
That was true, after all. When thought about, even if they were caught driving without a license, the penalty wasn’t very severe. The likely punishment would be just a fine — not a big deal at all!
The tension was just habitual guilt, feeling that if they were caught, it would be the end of the world...
They continued to move with the traffic flow, and soon, it became evident that there were more vehicles than usual. Then Xu Xiaoyan finally remembered, "I forgot, today is the school opening; of course, there will be more traffic! No wonder there are more traffic police here, look at how many out-of-town license plates there are..."
Once everyone understood, Yan Fei braced himself, "With so many cars from out of town, even if they check, they may not get to us; don’t be scared. Don’t let the traffic police see how nervous you are, or they might take special notice of our car."
These words were not only for Xu Xiaoyan but also for her two sisters. As for Professor Qi, he hadn’t taken this small matter seriously at all, watching with amusement as the young people discussed it back and forth filled with needless guilt.
After a bit more driving, as they approached the intersection, Yan Fei relaxed, "It’s just normal traffic control; no worries, look, they’re hardly stopping any cars, we’re fine."
In fact, under normal circumstances, traffic police wouldn’t stop every single vehicle to check documents, especially on a day like today, when the schools in Provincial City were reopening and there were many vehicles from out of town bringing in students. If they were to stop and inspect each one, that would just delay everyone’s day.
