Chapter 1087: Chapter 563: The Brick that Floats on Water

"Yan Xiaofei, what are you hiding here for?" Xu Xiaoyan called out Yan Xiaofei with such exasperation, it was if she despised iron for not turning into steel.

After the cattle farm had gotten on the right track, this guy had been leading a leisurely and carefree life. Now, suddenly busy, it was particularly with all kinds of people and social obligations—something Yan Fei was especially impatient with. He had been used to not fitting in since a young age and genuinely had no interest in these matters.

So, since Secretary Jiao came to motivate everyone a few days ago, and there was nothing essential that required his presence on the construction site, Yan Fei would find a place to hide whenever he had the chance, assuming that others, none the wiser, probably thought he was busy with some important matters.

Xu Xiaoyan, however, knew him well enough to guess that he had found a hiding spot once she hadn’t seen him for a while.

And the place he chose to hide was indeed a place not easily found by the average person—two new sand-dredging boats had been purchased, and only one old master was hired, while the other workers were locals and completely green, prone to mistakes. In the morning, one of the sandboats had a small issue, so Boss Yan gave the workers the day off, and he took the chance to relax on the boat!

Currently, the sand usage at their own construction site wasn’t huge, and neither was it in the township. One boat could handle it if pushed, so Boss Yan was quite whimsical when giving workers a holiday. In reality, the boats were new, and if there were any problems, they were minor. The workers probably hadn’t even gotten home yet by the time the boat was fixed.

Seeing Xu Xiaoyan coming over didn’t surprise Yan Fei; unless he escaped into the dinosaur world, he knew that as long as this girl put her mind to it, she would definitely find him.

Looking at his wife’s bemused expression, the thick-skinned guy waved his hand, "Come over, jump up here, I’ll catch you!"

"You come up right now, I’m not coming up there," Xu Xiaoyan stamped her foot. "Everyone else is busy, you at least should walk around and let people see you, right? What kind of way is this to hide?"

"I’m showing trust in everyone!" Yan Fei righteously insisted. "I’ve delegated tasks to everyone, and if I interfere now, doesn’t it show I don’t trust them? That would hurt everyone’s work enthusiasm."

"I can’t argue with you!" Xu Xiaoyan glared at him. "You get up here."

"Up I go!" Yan Fei saw that the girl wasn’t joking, laughed as he agreed, and in a swift move, jumped next to the girl, wrapping his arm around her before she could react, holding her in his embrace. "So what now that I’m up here? Did you want me to come up for a kiss?"

"Let go, there are people around!" She tried to wriggle free lightly, of course, without success.

A few minutes later, the girl finally had the chance to talk, "I’m telling you important things! Stop fooling around, do you know there was a problem with the bricks burnt today?"

"What problem?" Yan Fei was taken aback.

The brick kiln was under the supervision of a master, so there shouldn’t be any major issues, right?

"Today, the brick-firing master had a relative go to the hospital, so he popped out for a bit, and asked someone to watch the kiln for a while; as a result, a lot of overly large bricks were produced, all weirdly shaped. I even saw people throwing them into the river, where they floated on the water..." Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t fully grasp brick-firing in just a couple of days, so her explanation was somewhat inarticulate.

Bricks floating on water?

It was something most people probably had never seen.

But there were indeed such things. The naughty children near the villages with kilns knew about this; they would often go to the kilns to pick up misfired bricks. Some bricks were so misshapen they looked like weird, large buns.

These misfired bricks couldn’t really be called bricks anymore; some were full of honeycomb-like pores and felt as light as foam plastic when picked up, capable of floating on water.

Actually, the chances of such flawed bricks being produced were not high. The rural kilns followed a simple, agricultural operation, and even the master brickmakers sometimes didn’t understand the reasons behind such outcomes.

Xu Xiaoyan had probably seen this for the first time, so when she saw people seemed to be playing, tossing "bricks" into the water that then floated, she thought there was a serious problem.

Yan Fei understood immediately once he heard it and smiled, "No worries, there can’t be many bricks like that, right? We don’t rely on this to make money, it’s just a bit of coal that gets wasted. Don’t stress, it will be fine next time!"

Xu Xiaoyan nodded; this issue wasn’t really that serious after all. Even factories with strict production processes produced defective goods, let alone such a small brick kiln? She was merely too used to not seeing Yan Fei around, feeling as though something was missing. She needed to frequently see this guy strutting around; it gave her a sense of security, making her feel everything was under control even when busy.

Yan Fei put his arm around the girl and sat down in an area by the river where the grass was thick, "Just keep an eye out on the construction site; you don’t need to worry about anything else. With Uncle Ming and Heizi looking after it, and Professor Shu and those students being serious people, we can take a break when we can. You just need to help them with their calculations, and don’t overwork yourself..."

"Hmm!" The girl had just nodded when she saw the sandboat resting and couldn’t help but say, "Do you think we took a loss on buying the boats? It’s such a waste to just leave them there. Aren’t a lot of people from the township building houses? Why isn’t anyone coming to haul sand?"

Yan Fei laughed, "Here, there are rivers everywhere, and most places have sand. The township doesn’t need much sand for house building; some try to save money by getting some from the riverbank themselves, they don’t need to pay for it. Don’t worry, we will soon need a lot of sand when we start building bridges and houses ourselves."
