Chapter 1072: Chapter 557: The Uninvited Boss Niu_2
Yan Fei then answered the phone, and Boss Niu’s loud voice from the Tanghe County cement factory came through, "Brother Yan, I heard you’re planning a big construction project, isn’t that right? Big moves, big moves. At first, I didn’t believe it; I had to ask around a lot before I was convinced of the news. No wonder I thought you were extraordinary the first time I met you. I just had to admire you!"
Boss Niu was well-informed and quite straightforward, which was a good thing. The only issue was that he was a bit of a chatterbox—but if it weren’t for his talkative nature, Yan Fei wouldn’t have gotten to know him during a meeting in the city.
After a long bout of flattery, Boss Niu finally got to the point, "That said, Brother Yan, when you need cement in the future, you can’t forget your big brother! Rest assured, my factory might be small, but the products definitely meet the standards. We brothers don’t deal in falsehoods; the small power pole factories nearby all use my cement, you can be assured of its quality..."
Yan Fei had dealt with Boss Niu before and knew that he wasn’t one to mess around. Furthermore, when Boss Niu had just started out, he had offended some petty people, which led to his run-down plant being targeted and inspected three times in one month. Nevertheless, they couldn’t find any faults with the quality; in the end, he received only a minor penalty for environmental pollution.
This minor penalty became something Boss Niu took great pride in, mentioning it to Yan Fei more than once. As one could imagine, it was a story he would typically share in conversations.
Later, after the person he had offended made a mistake and retired early, Boss Niu even used the penalty as a talking point to look for business, explaining its history to whoever he met since the retirement made the incident somewhat known in industrial circles. Eventually, this actually helped Boss Niu secure several big contracts.
So, after hearing a long stream of ramblings from Boss Niu, Yan Fei replied directly, "Brother Niu, even if you didn’t call, once I start preparing the construction site, I would have asked you to deliver. You can rest assured. With our relationship, do you think I would even consider going far to find others?"
It seemed Yan Fei had indeed grown; in the past, he might not have made such a polite, albeit insincere, comment, probably reacting with something like, ’If your quality is good, I’ll want it; if not, don’t bother trying to curry favor with me.’
Hearing Yan Fei’s words, Boss Niu’s voice grew even more enthusiastic, "Great, I knew Brother Yan was a decisive man. Thanks in advance. By the way, are you busy right now?"
Yan Fei was listening to the traffic horns coming through the phone and replied, "I’m currently on a boat, checking out the terrain on the river with a professor who is here to do the design!"
"Well, I’m driving towards your place right now and brought you some local specialties. I think the last time we had a meeting in the county, I never got a chance to visit!" As expected, Boss Niu then said, "I’ll be there soon. You carry on with your work. I’m just coming to have a look, nothing else!"
Nothing else, yet he’s making the trip over!
After exchanging some more pleasantries with Boss Niu, Yan Fei took the opportunity to ask Professor Shu, "Teacher Shu, if I go ahead with the construction here, can you estimate how much cement might be needed for the initial stage? The person coming soon is the cement factory director, and we have a decent relationship. Their factory’s cement quality is good too. I’ll give him a rough number just to put his mind at ease."
Professor Shu laughed, "If you want me to say now, besides building bridges, if you also plan to construct a river embankment around the area, even several thousand tons wouldn’t be enough. However, you can adjust according to the progress of the construction when the time comes. Just place an order for three to five thousand tons for now. You can never have too much; it’s useful for building houses and roads."
Yan Fei really didn’t know much about construction, so he had no clue how much material he would need. With Professor Shu’s response, he knew how to welcome this unsolicited visit from Boss Niu.
Then, picking up his phone again, he casually called the cattle farm office, "Xu Xiaoyan, prepare a cement procurement contract. There’s a cement factory boss coming soon; if the talk goes well, just get the contract signed right away."
Xu Xiaoyan didn’t drop the ball at the crucial moment and asked a key question, "For the contract, we also need to write the cement grade. Do you have the data?"
This wife is indeed necessary.
Ever since Yan Fei started planning for River Heart Island, Xu Xiaoyan hadn’t been idle either. She contacted her old high school classmates who were now in university one by one, borrowing books and materials to study this field.
The fact that she could ask such a question was the result of her intense cramming these past few days. Otherwise, when ordinary people buy a couple of bags of cement to repair the drain in front of their house, who would care about what grade the cement is, or whether the resulting concrete’s strength meets a certain standard, C50 or C40?
His capable wife left Yan Fei a bit embarrassed, "Well, I’m not too sure myself, let’s discuss it when he arrives! We still need to build bridges, so we’ll probably need some high-quality cement. We’ll ask him for details when he gets here. Just leave the grade section blank for now and fill it in when signing, right?"
Xu Xiaoyan chuckled lightly on the other end, agreeing with a word before hanging up to draft the contract.
Yan Fei hung up the phone and quickly sought advice from the two people beside him—Ma Yongming, a small construction foreman who had been in the industry for so long, surely knew something about it. Moreover, there was Professor Shu, a real expert; consulting him about such a trivial issue felt like using artillery to swat a mosquito... No, given Professor Shu’s status and capability, it would be more like using nuclear weapons to swat a mosquito.
Having understood the situation, Yan Fei could not stay there any longer, he mounted his motorcycle and headed straight for the cattle farm.
He had not even reached the bridge when he received another call from Boss Niu, "Brother Yan, I’m here on the big bridge at the west entrance of your town. You said your cattle farm is just on the east side of the bridge, right? It must be, haha, I can already smell the buffalo..."
Yan Fei replied, somewhat annoyed, "The biggest daily task here is cleaning up cow dung and tidying up the place, I don’t believe you can smell anything with the windows up and not even stepping out of the car."
Boss Niu expressed his surprise, "Hey! Brother Yan, how did you know I didn’t roll down the windows?"
Yan Fei hung up the call and honked his motorcycle horn twice.
The car at the bridge immediately rolled down its window, and Boss Niu jumped out and waved at him, "Brother Yan..."
The warmth in his approach was just like Da Xiong and Bear Er when Yan Fei returned home after being away for half a month.
They both knew the score; there was really nothing much to discuss regarding the contract.
Yan Fei showed Boss Niu around his breeding farm and they took a tour around the beef jerky processing factory. After seeing everything, they finalized the order—Of course, tigers and black bears were out of the question. Yan Fei now preferred to keep things low-key, and with Boss Niu being such a blabbermouth, if he had seen the tigers and black bears, soon the whole Tanghe County would know about them.
Though Boss Niu was a bit wordy, he was efficient in his work, and after a quick look at the purchase contract, he signed it without a second word.
In fact, the people at the farm were still a bit worried as the payment for the land hadn’t been settled yet, which made them feel uneasy.
Yan Fei, however, was very calm about it. Even the city leaders were expected to attend the upcoming foundation-laying ceremony—the bigger the event, the less likely any mishaps would occur. After all this preparation, no one wanted things to fall through.
After signing, what else to do but drink?
Yet, Boss Niu was indeed aware of his limits. Although he had brought his son as a driver, he himself firmly chose to drink little. Usually a heavy drinker, he now held a small wine cup, sipping little by little. If it wasn’t for his burly appearance, one might have thought he was a delicate young lady!
Ma Yongming actually thought Boss Niu wouldn’t drink, and after urging him a couple of times, he didn’t press further. Instead, Boss Niu found it hard to justify himself: "Brother Ma, it’s not that I’m putting on airs. I’d keep pace with you drink for drink if it were just us. But here at Brother Yan’s place, I really dare not drink too much. If he gets a craving for more after two bowls and insists on me joining him, my 200 pounds might just not make it back home!"
The whole table burst out laughing.
Now, everyone knew about Boss Yan’s capacity for alcohol. Describing his drinking in terms of barrels and vats would be an understatement; he only ever got full, never drunk—this was what others thought, but if Boss Yan were really drinking, even getting full would be challenging. His body was a bottomless pit; he hadn’t yet figured out just how much he could drink.
After seeing off the jubilant and reluctant Boss Niu and as evening approached, Secretary Xiao Zhao finally called again, "Boss Yan, get ready, the senior officials from above might come down in the next couple of days..."
These next couple of days? Why can’t they set a precise date?
Yan Fei felt extremely helpless.
