Chapter 1063: Chapter 553 Torn Clothes_2
"Where did this come from? It’s really good! I have to get myself one too..." Yan Fei casually remarked.
"The county just got it sorted out. I can even give you this one... Talk about the important stuff now, the real deal!" Mayor Chen had been waiting for Yan Fei’s ’big move’ until his beard almost turned white, and now that he finally heard some news, who would want to chat about a map!
"Right, right!" Yan Fei quickly steered the conversation back. "Exactly, this area here. You see, we’ll dig a canal here, and I’ve also bought two dredgers, you know. We’ll dredge the surrounding canals to ensure that when the water rises a little, our town won’t have to use sandbags at the Village Entrance anymore."
"Hold on a moment!" Hearing Yan Fei’s confirmation, Mayor Chen got a bit uneasy. "Wait a second, I’ll take down the map so we can have a good look at it!"
What’s there to look at? That place is just at the town exit, a spot he often passes by, and he could visualize its general terrain and size even with his eyes closed.
The map on the wall was just affixed with a few thumbtacks, and with a bit of force, it moved from the wall to the table.
Then Mayor Chen stared at the map and couldn’t resist confirming again, "Are you sure, you want to lease such a large piece of land to turn into your cattle base? And to dig canals here too?"
Yan Fei nodded, "Yeah, pretty much decided. It depends now on what the village thinks, how much will it cost to lease the whole land? This is for the long term, however long the maximum lease is, that’s how long I’ll lease it. What if you get promoted in a couple of years and the new leader doesn’t get along with me, and decides to take back the land?"
"Don’t worry, no business in Tanghe County has been able to develop on its own and help the locals become wealthy like yours. We definitely support your work, with both hands up," Mayor Chen guaranteed with determination. "After digging the canals, what are your plans for developing River Heart Island? What’s the scale of the construction? How about the labor required?"
"You can be assured of that too. Didn’t you just ask me about this last time? The village suffered a flood and struggled for six months, this is also coincidentally a wake-up call for me. As I plan to increase the scale of my cattle farming, my current site is a bit too small, and it’s located right at the town entrance, which isn’t ideal," Yan Fei explained.
"As for the construction that needs to be undertaken, as you said, it definitely won’t be small. As soon as we negotiate a good deal, I’ll start work immediately. Taking advantage of the current agricultural downtime, the village’s laborers who have nothing to do can come work for me, digging and hauling bricks, at least earning something rather than just sitting idle at home."
"Just the canal digging isn’t a day or two’s job. My immediate plan is to finish the canal and the necessary bridges before winter. Also, I plan to fix up the surroundings of this island, including the uneven areas inside that need smoothing out; all of these need manpower. The technical jobs might be beyond our villagers, but they can definitely handle the digging and brick moving."
"In any case, this is killing two birds with one stone. I’m also taking this opportunity to rebuild a solid foundation, so I’m not scrambling to find land for cattle farming later on, which would be troublesome and expensive..."
Listening to Yan Fei’s plans and looking at the map, Mayor Chen finally confirmed that he hadn’t misunderstood Yan Fei’s words: "So the unusual-looking people you’ve hired these past few days are busy with this?"
"Yes!" Yan Fei nodded. "I need to have a clear plan in my mind before I discuss it with you! Otherwise, if I give you false promises, you’ll come after me later."
"You, you..." Mayor Chen laughed out loud, "You’re making yourself an outsider, but you can’t blame us for not helping. Do you have a clear picture now?"
"Kind of," Yan Fei also laughed. "So I came to ask you, how much would it be to lease that land for a year? Whether it’s leased to me for thirty, fifty, or a hundred years, tell me the total amount so I can go back and figure out my finances, see if I have enough!"
The question was a big one. Even though Mayor Chen was in charge, he couldn’t decide this on his own; he’d probably have to report it upwards and ask the county’s opinion. After all, this wasn’t just twenty or thirty acres; it was a significant request from Boss Yan, who was under Secretary Jiao’s watch, and he definitely couldn’t just make a decision privately.
Considering the map for a moment, Mayor Chen lifted his head, "Okay, I’ll report it to the higher-ups first and call a meeting in a couple of days to discuss it. How does that sound?"
"Sounds great!" Yan Fei smiled. "The planners I hired are old professors from the province; any of their students alone are frighteningly smart. I have to take good care of them to ensure they handle this job well. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head back first and wait for your discussion results."
Mayor Chen tried to persuade him to stay, "Don’t leave yet! Where else are you going to find fresh Douchi Vegetables now? Only Teacher Wen who had free time during the holidays went around finding them."
"Really, I’m not eating, I need to go back to my guests!" Yan Fei turned to leave. "Let me know if there’s any news soon!"
Despite Mayor Chen talking, his hand was already reaching for the telephone—still inviting people for dinner, probably he himself hadn’t even had time to eat!
