Chapter 1056: Chapter 551 Is This What You Call Working?
In the shade of trees by the river, Professor Shu sat in a lounge chair, savoring the unique aroma of tea as he leisurely sipped it, feeling as if he had already entered the blissful life of retirement, carried by the breeze.
What kind of tea was this, exactly?
Engrossed in studying his cup of tea, Professor Shu held it deliberately.
"Teacher, we’ve got the soil samples!" A few students came running, ignoring the sweat dripping from their foreheads. "We collected samples from five locations, each consisting of one sample from the surface and another from two meters deep, making ten samples in total. We haven’t been able to obtain samples from any deeper locations for now..."
Professor Shu set down his tea cup and glanced at the soil samples: "What conclusions have you drawn?"
The students exchanged looks, and one girl boldly began, "The soil layer here is quite thick, and the geological conditions are favorable for construction..."
She couldn’t continue because the look Professor Shu gave her was just too strange!
"Think outside the box, think wider!" Professor Shu’s look was one of disappointment. "Adapting measures to local conditions isn’t empty talk; it’s something I tell you to remember firmly. You need to think daringly, boldly—understand?"
As he spoke, his gaze drifted to two figures squatting by the river, fishing with straw hats on their heads—Chen Yingjun and Heizi. Originally, Heizi had work to do, but since Chen Yingjun insisted on staying, Yan Fei assigned Heizi a new task: to entertain their persistent visitor and make sure he enjoyed himself.
These two guys were perched on bamboo poles, their eyes not even on the foam floats they were using for fishing, but rather watching, engrossed, as Professor Shu lectured his students!
Professor Shu waved at the two men: "Come over here, both of you, I need to talk to you!"
Chen Yingjun and Heizi immediately dropped their fishing rods and came over, nodding and bowing. "Teacher Shu, what’s the matter?"
Professor Shu gestured to the soil samples held by the students: "What are your thoughts on this soil?"
Chen Yingjun looked the soil over and then, puzzled, said, "Teacher Shu, this... I’m just a technical secondary school student, I really don’t know about this. But the best mud for playing as a kid was this kind; other than that, I’ve got no idea!"
Heizi nodded: "He’s got more on me; I didn’t even finish middle school. But I think this soil would be really good for brick making. A buddy of mine’s family owns a brick factory, and the dirt they dig for brick making—looks pretty similar to this..."
Upon hearing this, Professor Shu nodded approvingly. "Not bad at all, you didn’t finish middle school? Looks like your mind is quite sharp; you lost out by not studying a few more years. That’s all for now; go back to your fishing."
Chen Yingjun and Heizi were confused, though Heizi felt a bit of smug pride. Was this a compliment from a professor? Could it be that I truly am a hidden genius, unrecognized until now? To think, that old middle school in town really did bury talent! On second thought, it wasn’t the school’s fault—what they taught was for the talented, and for geniuses like me, of course they couldn’t teach well. Didn’t I see that most teachers themselves weren’t the top students back in their day...?
Meanwhile, Professor Shu was back to educating his students: "Do you see now? This is what we always say about observing and learning. Don’t assume they can’t offer better suggestions just because they are less educated than you. That young man was right; this soil is perfect for brick making!"
The students were deflated. You had us collecting soil samples, and we racked our brains thinking professionally, and this was what you were talking about? Besides, even though we came from humble backgrounds, none of us had worked in a kiln before.
Seeing their confusion, Professor Shu continued, "What does it mean to adapt measures to local conditions? They want to dig a new river channel here, right? Won’t the excavated soil need a place to be deposited? It’s not just a cubic meter or two; furthermore, they plan to plant grass and construct greenhouses for mushroom cultivation on this side, so there’ll be a lot of work to do with these piles of soil. So why didn’t you consider a different angle and come up with a reasonable way to use this soil?"
At this point, the students had a sudden realization.
Exactly!
They were going to conduct major construction here, and this wasn’t the outskirts of a city with a lot of regulations.
What was needed for construction?
Bricks would definitely be required.
With the river nearby, water supply was convenient. If a kiln were built here for brick making, not only would the soil be put to use, but the bricks produced could also be utilized. This was indeed killing several birds with one stone!
This was what adapting measures to local conditions truly meant.
The students were overwhelmed though. How could an ordinary person come up with such a solution? Thinking outside the box was one thing, but this was on an entirely different level!
Observing the expressions of his students, Professor Shu could tell what they were thinking. He took a sip from his tea, put down the cup, and said, "Short of memory, if this were the old days, a few slaps on the hands would have helped you remember. I tell you to observe more, yet you don’t listen. Boss Yan is even younger than you, and he thinks of using the sand for construction. He’s already considering buying two sand dredgers to deepen the river, getting two benefits at once. Why didn’t it occur to you to turn this soil into bricks?"
While the students were being educated, Pang Fa just happened to be discussing with Yan Fei the purchase of boats: "There are no ready-made boats; they said they can start making them only after we pay a deposit. It doesn’t take long to build them, at shortest half a month, at longest a month to deliver."
Yan Fei nodded. "Then, Brother Fa, take the money and go reserve two boats now. But I’ve told you before, for these little things, you decide on your own; you don’t need to run everything by me. Once the boats arrive, put Heizi in charge. You and Master Xing go check the new factory design with Teacher Shu, and make it as good as possible according to our actual needs. There’s nothing else, go ahead and order the boats!"
