Chapter 1047: Chapter 547: Island Construction Concept_3

Chen Yingjun couldn’t bear to hear about it; he had stayed here for a few days during his last visit and knew there were several greenhouses raising earthworms. You had to keep your distance from those greenhouses when walking around them.

As they were talking, an old man came over with a bag of greens, smiling at Yan Fei from a distance with a kind of ingratiating smile Yan Fei had seen too many times, and still found uncomfortable, "Boss Yan isn’t busy, just watching the water from the bridge! I think the water won’t rise any higher. Your greenhouses have been damaged, I’ve got more vegetables in my garden than I can eat, so I brought some over for you. I’ve taken them straight to the field, so I won’t disturb your chat, you guys chat away, chat away..."

After the old man left, Chen Yingjun laughed and said, "It seems you’re really living the life here, you don’t even need to buy vegetables every day."

"They just want to do some odd jobs in the field to earn some extra cash," Yan Fei said, not feeling particularly proud of the fact.

This old man was from the village to the west; his land wasn’t far from there, and Yan Fei often passed by and could see it. The recent flooding had surely destroyed his vegetable patch too. The vegetables he brought were probably from his own home garden, and taking advantage of the chance that the greenhouses near the bamboo groves had been washed away, he hurriedly brought them over.

Yan Fei knew the reason without having to think about it: the flooding had damaged the vegetable fields, and it would be a while before any money could be made from them. Now he was hoping to find some temporary work at the cattle farm.

That’s just the way people are, sometimes they have to humble themselves for the sake of survival.

The village to the west was closer to the town, and there were more people who grew and sold vegetables normally, so life was a bit better. If they were this affected, you can imagine how desperate the people from other places hit by the flooding must be.

"What do you think if I really rented this whole area? If we dig a channel over here, it’ll become an island. What else can I do on the island besides raising cattle? Should I shut myself away and play the lord of the isle?" Yan Fei suddenly asked.

"Huh?" Chen Yingjun was taken aback, then he realized what Yan Fei meant, and his spirits lifted. "You could do so much with it. If you secure the land, you could transform it however you like! For instance, something related to your cattle raising – you could build a feed factory, right? Even if you don’t start a factory, you could build more greenhouses. Right now, whether it’s Agaricus bisporus or that disgusting worm, you have a market, right? Since that’s the case, just hire people to do the work for you?"

"Think about it, you wouldn’t have to worry about anything, you could spend time with your wife or go traveling. You’ve got quite a few people under you; have them oversee the work and all you need to do is collect the money. Aren’t you satisfied with that? You’re hiring people from the rural areas here, the labor costs aren’t high, right? It’s not like coal mining with its risks to life. It’s just managing greenhouses and raising cattle; wouldn’t just about anybody take the job for the right wage?"

"Not to mention, I haven’t been here long, but I dare say, the land here must be dirt cheap. There’s no mine underneath, so how much could it possibly cost to rent the whole area? If you tell your village that you want to lease all this land for fifty years and offer the bag of money you brought me as rent, do you believe that your village chief would have to give you the honor of the head seat whenever you dine out?"

Yan Fei thought that was true; the area was large and would probably amount to several hundred acres. But a large area didn’t mean there was a lot of usable farmland. Many places were full of ditches and gullies; nobody had bothered to level them out. Apart from the already level farmland, other places were either wasteland or, if someone was diligent, cleared to plant vegetables.

Because nobody was bullish about the location, thinking that with any rise of water, those slightly lower areas would become ponds, who would want to sweat and sow seeds on such land?

What did five million mean in a place like Sancha River? What about that GDP everyone’s talking about; how much does Sancha River Township make in a year?

"The key is, if you spend that five million, it’s not just about the money itself. You’ll have to renovate, right? You’ll need labor for the renovation, won’t you? You’ll definitely need a lot of manpower. Considering the small population of your entire village, the money spent on renovation could not only work towards prosperity but also ensure that everyone gets a slice of the wealth," Yingjun kept going, seemingly endless in his enthusiasm.

"Seriously, Brother Fei, don’t think you’d lack ways to make money with that land. Believe it or not, if you just leveled the island’s ground and planted grass for horse breeding, you could get rich. It’s trendy now, all these horse racing clubs and golf courses - these are things for the wealthy. The thing is, others might like to do it but they don’t have the conditions. You’ve got all the necessary conditions ready."

"Stop, stop, stop!" Yan Fei hurriedly called a halt. "Stop talking about ’my island, my island,’ I haven’t decided yet!"

"What are you still pondering?" Chen Yingjun got so anxious that he even forgot to speak Mandarin, but he immediately chuckled again after speaking. "Heh, not to hide it from you, Brother Fei, I have taken the liberty of doing some calculations for you. Unless you’re using ginseng for your cattle feed, you’re really making a fortune; I have never seen a more profitable business than yours. Others with such a large area are worried about not making money and losing capital, but with your cattle farm, you could take over this whole place and treat it as your own backyard. Am I right?"

Yan Fei remained expressionless; he could keep the villagers who had no experience in the dark about his earnings, but he couldn’t fool a shrewd fellow like Chen Yingjun. Having mingled on the cattle farm for a few days, even though Yingjun didn’t know about the ’secret formula’ feed, he had at least a rough idea of what the cows were being fed every day.
