Chapter 1027: Chapter 541 Swollen Water
Driving at night is a monotonous and tedious affair; ahead lies endless darkness, and all you can see is whatever the headlights illuminate. Occasionally, you’ll encounter another vehicle traveling by night, and a horn honked in greeting is sometimes enough to break the monotony of the journey.
Yan Fei got so bored he even thought about letting Heizi drive back alone. But then he remembered Heizi had just become a father, and if something happened to the guy, Yan Fei wouldn’t be able to face going back alone. So, he had to sit in the car, trying to stay patient, and keep making conversation to keep Heizi from dozing off while driving.
But he couldn’t stand it any longer: "Pull over, take a break—I’ll drive for a bit!"
He really couldn’t endure it any longer. Driving at night is naturally slow, but Heizi was being so cautious it was more like he was tiptoeing around a sleeping baby, afraid the slightest move might startle them awake.
A slow speed is one thing, especially at night, and Yan Fei even bore with it when they were overtaken by two farm tricycles. But did you really have to swerve to avoid every tiny pothole in the road?
Heizi thought Yan Fei was worried about him falling asleep and promptly assured, "Don’t worry, Brother Fei, if I can’t hold on, I’ll call you. You rest for now!"
"Oh," Yan Fei responded noncommittally, then changed the subject, "Hey, for this year’s New Year’s, aside from giving out some bonuses, should we give out something else?"
Heizi was startled, "Brother Fei, are you confused? It’s only May in the lunar calendar, and this year even includes a leap month. New Year’s is still a long way off!"
Yan Fei replied languidly, "Not that far. Given your driving speed, I estimate we’ll be home just in time for New Year’s!"
"..."
A little while later, Yan Fei took the driver’s seat, shifted gears, and the car’s speed picked up: "A good car really feels different to drive. I just don’t get how you can bear to drive at that slow pace for so long!"
Heizi’s eyes widened as he gazed ahead: "There’s a pothole..."
The Mercedes Benz S600 roared past, barely noticing the little pothole on the road.
"Enough, go to sleep!" Yan Fei was getting impatient. "Just relax when I’m driving!"
Good night vision is a real advantage when driving, particularly at night, and it made a huge difference for Yan Fei. While most people could only see where the headlights reached, Yan Fei, the driver, could keep an eye on both sides—night was no different from day for him.
Heizi hadn’t noticed at first, but after watching Yan Fei drive for a while, he couldn’t hold back his curiosity: "Brother Fei, how did you know there was going to be a small tractor coming out from there?"
In the dead of night, a dimly lit, small walk-behind tractor emerged from a side road. The sound of the tractor’s engine was one thing, but when you were in a car, it was virtually impossible to hear a tractor coming from up ahead.
Under these circumstances, Yan Fei had already slowed down beforehand and passed by smoothly. Heizi was somewhat amazed since he had also been vigilantly watching the road and hadn’t noticed the tractor coming.
"Your eyesight sucks!" Yan Fei’s comment left Heizi feeling indignant.
So Heizi, who always prided himself on his good vision, strained his eyes even more, hoping to catch sight of an unexpected obstacle in time to warn Brother Fei, proving that his vision was definitely a solid 20/20.
But just after they crossed a large bridge, Yan Fei’s car suddenly slowed down. Heizi was puzzled, "What’s wrong, Brother Fei?"
Yan Fei was really annoyed, "We’ve run into some jerks—there are nails in the road!"
It was truly hard to see at night, and in situations like this, you could be driving along, and suddenly, your tire would get punctured. It wasn’t a surprise. Continue for another 200 meters, and right by the side of the road, there would definitely be a tire repair site. Just call out, and they’d be waiting for you!
If you were driving a big truck, it might be slightly better since drivers often weren’t alone and were experienced in jianghu ways. Those waiting by the roadside would just charge a decent price.
However, if you came across a small sedan like the one Yan Fei and his companion were driving, and you could tell they were young and spoke with a foreign accent, charging them around a hundred or eighty for a puncture repair wouldn’t be surprising. A reasonable charge of thirty or fifty would be considered a good rate. To encounter someone who charged the standard fee, you’d have to be lucky—probably the result of burning incense before setting out.
Sure enough, just past the stretch of road with nails, not far ahead, a lightbulb flickered on. Two crookedly written characters were clearly visible on a shabby wooden board: Tire Repair!
Heizi, already bored to death, perked up at this, "Brother Fei, should I go and chuck a brick at them?"
Yan Fei, blessed with great eyesight, pulled over, "There’s half a brick by that tree root. Go pick it up."
Once Heizi had retrieved the brick and they reached the tire repair shop, Heizi was about to get out when Yan Fei lost patience, "Never mind, I’ll do it."
Taking the half-brick, he stepped out of the car and, standing by the car door, hurled it toward the shabby little house.
With a loud crash, the roof of the house caved in, leaving an enormous hole. The people inside weren’t dead asleep; they started yelling almost immediately.
Yan Fei got back in the car, shifted gears, and drove off!
They hadn’t gone far when the door of the shabby place burst open and a figure wearing a hastily donned coat ran out, fuming with rage. He ran to the middle of the road, looked left and right, then started shouting something in their direction.
The two in the car burst into boisterous laughter.
See, you can’t always be on your best behavior. Doing a bit of vigilante justice every now and then is good for your mental and physical health!
Just tossing that one brick at least lifted their spirits for an hour.
