Chapter 58: Going To War

Chapter 58: Going To War

Julia’s movements made Carlotta’s heart skip a beat. The force of those two slaps was not light at all, and Danica was indeed slapped awake.

Seeing this, Julia didn’t directly ask questions but instead said to Amelia, "Miss, I plan to take her to a different place and have more professional people interrogate her."

"Go ahead."

Amelia nodded slightly.

Professional matters should naturally be handled by professionals. She only needed to know the results.

With Amelia’s permission, Julia immediately grabbed Danica and headed out of the courtyard. With a single step, it was as if she had condensed the earth, and in an instant, she was far away and out of sight.

This display of power made Carlotta envious, wondering when she would be able to possess such abilities.

Retracting her gaze, Carlotta said to Amelia, "Miss Fenwick, from your previous conversation with Ms. Julia, it seems this assassin might be from the Sunset Rose? I’ve also heard a bit about this assassin organization. It’s said that to complete assassination missions, they continuously send out assassins, each one stronger than the last. Is that really the case?"

She deliberately asked this to find a reasonable excuse to stay by Amelia’s side.

Amelia sobbed helplessly, "If it really is an assassin from Sunset Rose, then this matter is indeed troublesome. I wanted to help you completely resolve this threat before I leave, but it seems difficult to solve now."

Carlotta was startled, "Where are you going?"

Amelia smoothed her slightly wind-tousled silver hair and softly said, "Miss White, our empire has already started a war with the Velmoria Empire. You should have heard about this, right?"

Carlotta nodded, "I did see related news in today’s newspaper."

In fact, she had learned about the war earlier through intelligence, but no matter when, she always felt it was something unrelated to her.

War is serious and important, but it also feels very distant to her. As a student at the academy, she wouldn’t be drafted. So she always thought that even until the war ended, she might not be involved at all.

Why is Amelia bringing up this war?

Carlotta looked at Amelia, her heart skipped a beat as if she had thought of something, but she wasn’t quite sure.

Amelia slowly said, "With the war coming, many citizens of the empire cannot stay out of it, and neither can I. Starting tomorrow, I will be heading to the Duchy of Francis to join the front lines and become a part of the war."

Carlotta broadened her eyes at Amelia.

Tomorrow?

Tomorrow she’s leaving to join the war?

This news was really sudden for Carlotta, completely disrupting her subsequent plans.

Suddenly, she remembered a piece of intelligence she had seen earlier, stating that the empire had requested all major noble knights to participate in the war... But why does Amelia have to go too?

Carlotta had originally thought that with Amelia here, as long as she stayed with her every day, even the threat from Sunset Rose wouldn’t be too afraid, so her mindset was relatively relaxed.

But now, knowing that Amelia might leave, her heart was in turmoil, and a sense of unease quickly spread throughout her body.

"That can’t be right."

Carlotta thought for a moment and asked, "Miss Fenwick, didn’t you come to Caerwyn Academy to become the dean’s disciple? If you go to war, how will you achieve that goal?"

Not just Amelia, but all the noble children currently at Caerwyn Academy came for this reason, didn’t they?

Amelia said, "Dean Richards is currently in the Sun Moon Federation handling important matters and won’t be back for a while. There’s no need for me to stay at the academy indefinitely. Moreover, war is a crisis, but also an opportunity."

She softly told Carlotta that her father actually hoped she could use this war to gain experience.

Wars between empires don’t happen easily, and once they do, they represent many opportunities for advancement. Many people who want to achieve a class leap must embrace war.

Although the Fenwick family is already a noble family, there is still much room for growth. Having Amelia represent the Fenwick family in the war would only bring benefits to the entire Fenwick family.

For Amelia personally, it’s about an important future.

"I will leave tomorrow, this was decided long ago, so I..."

Amelia didn’t know how to continue, feeling a bit helpless.

She wanted to resolve Carlotta’s troubles before leaving, but if it’s Sunset Rose, then this trouble might be difficult to erase for a long time.

The tenacity of Sunset Rose is well-known throughout the Wendell Empire. Many have tried to eliminate this assassin organization but have never succeeded. It’s like a thorn stuck in the flesh, causing discomfort and helplessness.

After some thought, Amelia could only say, "Perhaps you can stay with others for long-term protection. For example, Mrs. Austin, she should choose to protect you after learning about your situation."

Clorinde Austin, one of the managers of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, one of the six major chambers of commerce in the capital.

Carlotta had helped Clorinde with questions about the elven knight path, and Clorinde had also brought Carlotta many benefits, even warning the civil servant couple when they came to the academy to cause trouble.

If it’s this lady, there is indeed a high possibility she would protect Carlotta, but...

But Carlotta felt that Mrs. Clorinde’s protection wouldn’t be as strong as Amelia’s.

She is a manager of the Austin Chamber of Commerce, with many things to attend to, and her family issues have appeared in Carlotta’s intelligence. Her husband is having an affair, and this issue could explode at any time, causing huge trouble.

Carlotta knew that if she really sought protection from Clorinde, she would at most be arranged for protection by guards, which is already quite good protection, but... she still didn’t feel secure.

The feeling of security is really quite subtle.

Normally, being safe should bring a sense of security, but often, feeling secure and being safe are two different things.

One can feel very safe but does not have a sense of security. Or one can feel not safe at all but inexplicably have a sense of security.

It’s a strange feeling, and Carlotta suddenly realized that it seems only by Amelia’s side does she feel secure.

Amelia was still discussing the follow-up arrangements for Carlotta.

In fact, she didn’t need to concern herself with these matters, but she truly considered Carlotta a friend, so she couldn’t ignore the situation and had to ensure that Carlotta’s affairs were properly arranged.

"For some reason, the base of the Sunset Rose was raided by the security bureau, and now their forces in Kestholm are not significant. So, for a considerable period, you shouldn’t encounter too many difficulties."

Amelia comforted Carlotta.

"Can I come with you?"

Carlotta asked.

"What?"

Amelia was taken away.

"Can I go to the battlefield with you, Miss Fenwick?"

Carlotta looked at Amelia seriously, finally making her decision.

To choose safety or a sense of security?

She didn’t ponder much on this question.

She knew that the battlefield was a perilous place, likely more dangerous than the imperial capital, but Amelia being there would provide her with a sense of security.

So, she chose the battlefield, chose the sense of security.

Amelia was somewhat surprised and asked, "You don’t need to follow me. In the imperial capital, I believe Lady Austin can protect you. Although the Austin Chamber of Commerce is just a business, as one of the six major chambers of commerce in the Wendell Empire, their power is formidable, and Lady Austin holds considerable control within it."

She didn’t think it was a good idea for Carlotta to follow her to the battlefield.

Although she was going for the purpose of gaining experience, and although there would be people protecting her in secret, and despite all these ’althoughs,’ the battlefield was still a dangerous place.

Historically, many nobles who went to the battlefield for experience ended up dying there. Even with guards secretly protecting them, absolute safety was hard to guarantee.

After all, it was the battlefield!

The battlefield also had another, more chilling name: the meat grinder, grinding the lives of both sides!

"Take me with you, Miss Fenwick."

Carlotta’s attitude remains resolute.

"That’s the battlefield."

"I know."

"It’s very dangerous there."

"I know."

"Then why do you still want to come with me?"

Amelia looked intently at this classmate she hadn’t known for very long, as if she had just realized that she didn’t truly understand her.

She only knew that her classmate had a terrifyingly advanced understanding of the elven knight path, far ahead of everyone else, and that she was a hardworking and diligent person, having already become a fourth-tier apprentice in a short time.

But there were still many things she didn’t understand, and often, she couldn’t discern this classmate’s thoughts or understand some of her actions.

For example, at this moment, she really didn’t understand why her classmate insisted on following her to the battlefield.

Could it be that she liked her?

Carlotta herself didn’t know how to answer. Should she tell the truth, that she felt a sense of security only by Amelia’s side?

Wouldn’t that sound too ambiguous?

After thinking about it, Carlotta said seriously, "I also want to seize the opportunity to achieve great deeds."

Amelia couldn’t help but laugh, "Achieve great deeds? Although your talent is good, Miss White, being a fourth-level apprentice now, isn’t it a bit too difficult to achieve great deeds?"

"With ambition, perseverance, and determination, even the most difficult things are not impossible to accomplish."

Carlotta affirmed.

"Well said... but that’s still an excuse, right?"

"Mm, it’s an excuse."

"Then what’s the real reason?"

"This reason, I’ll tell you after I’ve made achievements on the battlefield, okay?"

Carlotta blinked her big eyes.

Seeing that she couldn’t brush it off and not wanting to tell the truth, she had to resort to this kind of conversational trick.

Looking at Carlotta’s innocent expression, Amelia hesitated to speak, and finally exclaimed.

"If you insist on coming, if you encounter any trouble, you’ll have to find a way to solve it yourself. On the battlefield, where everything changes in the blink of an eye, I can’t always protect you."

"No problem."

Carlotta smiled.

Amelia was set to depart for the Duchy of Francis the next day, so the corresponding arrangements had been made, but Carlotta had made a last-minute decision and needed to make some arrangements.

First, she needed to request a long leave from Caerwyn Academy... Once she went to the battlefield, it was uncertain how long it would be before she returned, so it was always good to request a long leave in advance.

Carlotta needed to inform those she knew, letting them know she was going away, so that if someone came looking for her to ask about the elven knight path, they wouldn’t make a wasted trip.

For example, Clorinde, for example, Doris, and so on.

After Carlotta had arranged her own affairs, she inquired about the situation with Danica and learned that the interrogation had not yet yielded results.

As a professional assassin, Danica had intense training and was very tight-lipped. It was clearly difficult to get anything out of her in a short time.

After learning this, Carlotta stopped paying attention to Danica. She felt that rather than trying to get information from Danica, it would be better to wait until dawn when the system could provide her with intelligence.

She returned to her dormitory, quickly packed her luggage, and then left the dormitory with her belongings. She would still stay at Amelia’s dormitory that night, so after packing today, she wouldn’t need to return to her own dormitory tomorrow.

As she walked past the various teaching buildings of Belfam Academy, the wide square, and the students coming and going, Carlotta couldn’t help but feel a sense of sentimentality.

She had originally thought she would stay at this academy for a long time, but often, things change much faster than expected, and now she was about to go to the Duchy of Francis to participate in the empire’s war.

On the surface, this didn’t seem like a very wise choice, but Carlotta’s instincts told her that this was the best choice.

When she arrived at Amelia’s dormitory, Amelia was reading a book in the courtyard. Seeing Carlotta arrive, Amelia said, "Miss White, you should have a storage card, right?"

Carlotta’s heart skipped a beat, and she couldn’t help but ask, "How did you know?"

Amelia smiled and said, "Even though you take things out of your storage card very discreetly, pretending they came from your pocket, how could such a thing escape my notice?"

"Alright."

Seeing that Amelia knew, Carlotta didn’t hide it anymore. She patted her suitcase and stored it in the storage card.

Amelia said, "At your current level, being cautious is fine. The value of a storage card is high, and it’s inevitable that others might covet it."

"Should I take the suitcase out again?"

Carlotta asked.

Amelia smiled slightly, "That’s not necessary. If you’re by my side without luggage, others will just assume your luggage is in my Ten-Heart Pearl."
