Chapter 108: Chapter 120: A One-of-a-Kind Gift (5)

Isabel Smith looked at Elijah Smith as if they were separated by a lifetime.

Her heart suddenly began to race, and she couldn’t help but clasp the hem of her skirt, straining to maintain a calm expression. She struggled to call out a cheerful smile and spoke to Elijah, her voice trembling slightly, "Eli..."

Isabel could only utter one syllable before her voice faltered. She pursed her lips, took a deep breath, and finally called out the name she had been trying to say, "Elijah."

Elijah Smith stood calmly in front of Isabel, not even bothering to remove his sunglasses or show any hint of emotion in the lower half of his face. It was as if Isabel’s words hadn’t reached him, and he remained silent and unmoved.

Just like that, the name Isabel had called out fell into the void, unanswered.

Isabel’s parents had died on their way to pick Marion Hancock up from Starhaven University.

Though Elijah was unaware of the specifics, the death of both parents was a heavy blow to the then-thirteen-year-old. He’d often been clingy with Isabel, only to later see her exiled to the United States by their grandmother. In a moment, the Smith family was reduced to just Elijah.

As a result of the drastic changes in his family, Elijah’s personality changed drastically. He became rebellious and defiant, often spending his days indulging in pleasures with questionable company. Mrs. Smith, his grandmother, would not hesitate to discipline him.

Mrs. Smith’s method of discipline was locking him in the Black House.

The Black House was the second floor of an attic in the Smith family’s backyard.

Each time Elijah was punished by being locked up, he would be confined for one day and one night. Mrs. Smith forbade anyone from providing him food or drink.

Late at night, when Elijah could no longer bear the hunger, Charlotte Green would secretly bring him food.

At that time, young Elijah found himself with no family members beside him. Over time, he began to view Charlotte as family, and she gradually replaced Isabel in his heart as his older sister.

Isabel had wondered how she would face Elijah upon her return to the country, but she never expected their reunion to be so abrupt and unprepared. Consequently, when Elijah appeared indifferent, her heart, which had been practically impenetrable, suddenly ached.

Charlotte Green stood next to Elijah, her wrist gently hooking his arm and wearing a familial smile, her eyes curved as she tilted her head to look at Isabel. She was beautiful.

She knew the coldness between Isabel and Elijah but deliberately raised her hand to prod Elijah, her voice coyly saying, "Elijah, your sister, Isabel, is talking to you. How can you be so rude? You haven’t seen her for years; at least greet her."

Elijah pursed his lips, then turned his head abruptly, making it clear that he had no desire to talk to Isabel.

Seeing Elijah’s deliberate turn, Isabel’s hands, which had hung at her sides, subconsciously clenched into fists as they trembled uncontrollably, and waves of pain surged within her heart.

In that moment, many memories came flooding back.

When she was six years old, she saw Elijah being born.

When she was seven, she began teaching Elijah to walk.

When she was nine, she accompanied the driver in taking Elijah to kindergarten when their parents were busy at work.

When she was eleven, late one night, Elijah had developed a high fever with no one in the Smith house to aid them. She carried him on her back for a long time until she was able to hail a taxi and bring him to the hospital.
