Chapter 610: Chapter 612: I’m Still Too Naive
The manager had anticipated such an outcome, but there were still some matters she needed to attend to.
"Boss, may I go and apologize?" the manager tentatively asked.
The middle-aged store owner sighed upon seeing the pale-faced manager and said, "Go ahead."
After all, the person she had offended was no ordinary individual but a powerful official responsible for a city with a population of tens of millions.
"Thank you, Boss."
"Secretary He, I am the owner of this store. It’s due to my lack of management that such an unpleasant incident occurred. This is the money you paid just now, and the lady’s wedding dress is a small token of my sincerity," Boss Xie said, his politeness reaching the extreme.
Chu Feng said, "You should be saying this to me; I was the one who paid. By saying it to him, you make it seem like he’s taking bribes. He couldn’t have earned this much money up to now. By talking like this, your intentions are truly malicious."
Upon hearing Chu Feng’s words, Boss Xie shivered uncontrollably, turning pale as he said, "Yes, yes! This was a mistake on my part. Sir, this is the money you paid for the wedding dress just now."
Chu Feng glanced at it and said, "If I bought it, it means I bought it; I don’t need you to return the money to me. Nor do I need your gift. I am their elder; to use your gift as a favor wouldn’t be proper, would it?"
Boss Xie found Chu Feng somewhat troublesome, but still maintained a smile and said, "Of course, it wouldn’t be proper. But you also really don’t need to buy everything. After all, my store needs to continue operating. How about I buy it back from you?"
Chu Feng said, "Don’t trouble yourself. I’m not accustomed to taking advantages. You don’t need to apologize to me either."
After a pause, Chu Feng added, "You can rest assured; your Secretary He is a good official. As long as you don’t break any regulations, he won’t interfere with your business. Just carry on as usual. Haven’t you noticed what his silence means?"
Boss Xie’s eyes widened in round surprise because she genuinely did not know what it meant for He Jianguo to remain silent. Could his silence mean anything other than dissatisfaction?
Chu Feng shook his head and said, "His silence is because he feels that this matter isn’t worth his attention. But should he speak, it’s very likely that he would only make things worse. And don’t you think that by coming over like this, you might have implicated him in wrongdoing?"
With every word Chu Feng spoke, another bead of sweat formed on Boss Xie’s forehead. After saying so much, the sweat had already started to drip onto the floor.
"Am I not making myself clear?" Chu Feng asked, looking at Boss Xie.
"I understand," Boss Xie said, wiping away the sweat.
"I... "
"You don’t need to say anything either. To tell the truth, he’s very busy, and I’m quite busy too. Once I leave this doorway, I really might not remember who you are," Chu Feng said to the manager who was about to speak.
"Thank you, Uncle," He Jianguo said in a low voice after the two had left.
Chu Feng said, "It’s not easy being an official like you; you can’t even speak freely."
He Jianguo smiled honestly, offering no rebuttal.
Everyone’s pursuits are different. Chu Feng’s pursuit was simply for himself and his loved ones to be safe and happy, with just a bit of money.
He Jianguo’s ambition lay in his career. Chu Feng found it boring, but He Jianguo took delight in it.
After Rao Ying and Xie Mengying had made their selections, the group of four left the bridal shop together.
Before departing, Chu Feng gave the owner an address to have the wedding dress delivered to his specified location.
"Uncle, Xiao Ying, I need to head back to the city," He Jianguo said apologetically.
Rao Ying, being considerate, said, "You should hurry back. I’m already very happy that you waited for me to try on the wedding dress today."
Chu Feng waved his hand and said, "Alright, hurry along, I’ll take them both home. I’ll make sure they get home safely."
He Jianguo said, "Thanks, Uncle."
After Chu Feng had dropped off Rao Ying and Xie Mengying at their school, he stayed at He Zhen’s place until evening before heading home himself.
After all, he still had experiments to conduct tonight.
However, when Chu Feng got home, he encountered a highly disappointing outcome. The experiment was canceled because Jingyan had work to handle tonight. Chu Feng was left alone at home.
The nightly news broadcast had just ended when Chu Feng received a call from Sister Mengying.
"Sister Mengying, missing me already after just an hour apart?" Chu Feng teased.
Xie Mengying replied, "As if I’d miss you. Go check online. The incident at the bridal shop today has been edited and posted on the internet. Now a lot of people are attacking Secretary He. Everyone believes Secretary He was abusing his power, and the internet is full of condemnation."
Chu Feng’s brow furrowed upon hearing Xie Mengying’s words.
He turned on his computer and searched for ’He Jianguo.’
Sure enough, everything that appeared was linked with phrases like ’abusing power’ and ’misusing privileges.’
And the video had indeed been expertly edited, in a way that regardless of how you looked at it, it appeared as though He Jianguo and himself were both abusing their power.
"It seems I was too naive; political struggles indeed are the most complex," Chu Feng murmured as he watched the video online.
When Xie Mengying heard what Chu Feng said, she responded, "How can you be so calm? The internet is full of insults right now. How is Secretary He supposed to carry on with his work?"
"Sister Mengying, I could understand if someone else was anxious. But you saying you’re anxious makes the performance seem a bit fake. I saw you secretly recording the entire process with your phone," Chu Feng said to Xie Mengying.
Upon hearing Chu Feng’s words, Xie Mengying’s tense nerves relaxed, and she said, "So boring. I thought you’d be nervous too."
Chu Feng asked, "Sister Mengying, do you think I’m a fool?"
"Fool!"
Chu Feng, feeling downcast, said, "Sister Mengying, it seems we can’t enjoy ourselves properly."
Xie Mengying giggled and said, "Then let’s not. I mainly wanted to ask you when to release the video I have."
Chu Feng said, "No rush, let them jump around a bit more. Let Jianguo see exactly who is behind this mischief. Once things have simmered down a bit, you can put it online. Just send the video you have to Rao Ying, and let her pass it on to Jianguo."
"Okay, I got it. I’ll send it to Rao Ying right now to stop her from worrying," Xie Mengying replied.
"Good," Chu Feng said.
After hanging up with Xie Mengying, Chu Feng’s phone rang again almost immediately.
He hesitated when he saw the call was from Mia, but decided to answer it anyway.
"Boss, could you come over to my place?" Mia said.
Remembering what Mia had said to him that morning, Chu Feng felt a bit uneasy and replied, "Mia, whatever it is, we can just talk over the phone, can’t we?"
Mia replied, "You’d better come in person, Boss. It’s about my brother; it’s quite serious."
