Bye, My Ruthless Alpha
Chapter 32: Caroline

Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Caroline

Tori’s POV

"King, there is a big misunderstanding in this matter. Listen to my explanation! King!" Sophia was so anxious that her voice carried a sobbing tone. Her eyes were red and tears were swirling in them as she hurriedly lifted up the hem of her skirt and stumbled in the direction of the king’s departure to chase after him.

The king was so full of anger at the moment that he was extremely fast on his feet, and in the blink of an eye, he was in his family’s imposing automobile.

The car roared to life and raised dust as he quickly left the party.

Sophia ran as hard as she could, panting, her hair strewn on both sides of her cheeks, but in the end she couldn’t catch up. She could only watch the car drift away until it disappeared from view, leaving her alone in the same spot.

She stood there alone, her legs weak, her feet staggering unsteadily. She was trembling, her teeth clenching loudly, her hands tightened into fists, making her knuckles become white. She knew in her heart that she had made a huge mistake this time. When she and Joy went back, what they would face would not only be beaten up by Alpha Marcus, but they would probably be kicked out by the king without any mercy, and that would be the end of them.

Alpha Marcus would be furious if he found out about this. And if she was thrown out by the king, she would be the laughing stock of the werewolf kingdom, and people would think they were of questionable character, and it would be a fool’s errand to marry Cayden again.

Sophia’s desperation was compounded by the fact that I had come to add insult to injury, which made her even more furious. The anger in her chest seemed to be burning her to the ground.

"You asshole!" Sophia squeezed the words out through her teeth, and when she came back to her senses, she decided with certainty that I was to blame for all of this. I had caused her to be in such a mess.

The anger in Sophia’s heart drove her to slap me, her arm raising high, but something got in the way. When she tried to withdraw her hand from whatever was holding it, Sophia realized that Kas’ hand was tightly clasped around her wrist. She sucked in a few breaths of cold air. Her face was white as frost, and beads of sweat were seeping from her forehead.

"Sophia, stop making a scene.”

Sophia didn’t really have the guts to keep fighting, she was so furious that her chest was heaving violently, her body shaking. She was about to pass out from anger.

Kas let go of her when she saw this, her expression still calm.

A car pulled up in front of the entrance, and I called out softly to the driver, my voice gentle, giving him her return address and then getting in with Kas.

As the wind continued to howl outside, seeming to sweep everything into darkness, I wrapped the shawl Sophia gave me around her mouth and nose, revealing only a pair of bright eyes as I gazed out the window, the night reflecting in them, while I pondered something.

In retrospect, Sophia’s self-appointed traps seemed to be merely vicious, unskilled, and little more than tricks. Sophia thought that I did not understand the king’s taboos, which was indeed a miscalculation on her part. She took me to the king, but gave me the six-pointed star necklace, and it was obvious that the purpose of all this fuss today was to get me killed.

"Stealing a chicken won’t get you anywhere." The arc of Kas’ lips widened wider, her eyes filled with mockery, as if she was watching a comical farce.

"What a show. It’s a show that doesn’t end here," I said softly, a hint of deep understanding in my eyes, as if I knew everything that was to follow.

How Sophia stole the king’s favorite brooch? That alone wouldn’t sit well with the king. Alpha Marcus would find out soon enough, and when he did, Sophia and the others would be in for a hard time.

The thought of Sophia winning back Alpha Marcus’ forgiveness so easily, and then losing it right afterward, made Kas smile even more joyfully, almost laughing, gloating in her eyes.

"Sophia will be greatly weakened in the short term." Kas laughed in her mind. "The King will teach them a lesson without us having to do anything."

I said goodbye to Kas at the door since I had other things to do. Then I entered my room.

After a while, I found myself changing into something a little more comfortable and form fitting. What I hadn’t expected though, was to hear Cayden’s name from the other side of the door– and for the door to burst open once more to show another woman.

A tall, curvy, dark-haired woman with green eyes stood in the doorway. Her long hair hung in waves around her face and cascaded over her shoulders. She didn’t seem like the sweet, innocent type, and her brows narrowed as she stepped into the room, her eyes looking around before she closed the door.

“Who the hell are you?” she asked with clear irritation.

I was too stunned to speak. “I’m sorry... What?”

Rolling her eyes, the woman crossed her arms over her chest. “I asked who the hell you are... Why are you in this room? Are you one of Cayden’s playthings? Because honestly, I don’t have time to deal with you if you are.”

Another woman was angry about me being with Cayden...

How many women did he have like this?

“I am not a plaything.” After dealing with Sophia for a couple days, I was more comfortable handling invaders to my room. I was quite sure no one would hurt me in the capital, knowing I was with Cayden, so I decided to try to get a sense of the situation. “May I ask who you are and how I may help you?”

A glint of amusement appeared in the woman’s eyes, and a smirk crossed her face. “Well, I know you’re not his mate, because you don’t carry his mark. Which means either you’re here for sexual amusement, or you’re snooping...so, which is it?”

As she stepped toward me, the door opened again, and Cayden and Jace entered quickly.

She turned, ran to Jace and gave him a bear hug. "So good to see you, Jace! I missed you!"

Jace was a bit uneasy for some reason, but he had a huge grin on his face which was quite rare. While he wasn’t as cold as his Alpha, he normally wouldn’t show much emotion either. However, I could tell that he was happy. Very happy.

He gave her an embrace back with a smile. "Good to see you again, Caroline."

Who was this girl?

“Well, hello to you as well, Cayden.” She turned to Cayden, wrapping her arms around him and hugging him.

Cayden allowed that? I knew she shouldn’t, but I had to admit I was...jealous.

“What, no warm greeting for your little sister?”

What?! I was embarrassed by my unreasonable jealousy now...

“Why are you in my room, Caroline?” Cayden grumbled, seeming to not like the affection she was giving him. “You know I like my privacy.”

“Privacy for your plaything?” Caroline asked.

Her gaze returned to me once more. Cayden quickly stepped in front of me, blocking her line of sight, his back to me.

I knew that Cayden was temperamental at times when it came to me. But this was his sister– he really wasn’t going to tell her anything?

“This is Tori,” Jace finally said with a smile. “She is a special guest of your brother’s, and needs time to get situated in the capital. It’s her first time being here.”

“Is she your girlfriend, Cayden?” Caroline asked again, and this time, I was able to see the smirk on her face.

“No, she’s my breeder,” Cayden snarled.

Caroline’s eyes widened in shock. “Seriously?” she exclaimed.

“Caroline... Right now really isn’t the time. Please, let’s leave and let Tori get her rest. We do have dinner tonight, and everyone should use this time to get prepared.” Jace’s attempt to fix the situation was not effective, because Cayden’s sister didn’t look like she was going to obey what either man had to say.

“Cayden... Do you really hate the idea of love so much that you would take a breeder instead of a mate? Come on...”

Cayden growled again, and I knew that nothing good was about to happen. Cayden wasn’t going to let her talk to him like that.

... Was he?

“Get out, Caroline, or...” Cayden demanded, but Caroline rolled her eyes, obviously ignoring her brother’s empty threat.

Jace gently gripped Caroline’s arm and pulled her aside. “You know, Kas is down the hall and was asking about you. She is going to be hurt if you don’t go see her first.”

Caroline turned around and smiled. “Nice job deflecting. This isn’t over, but for now, I’ll let it go,” she called to Cayden over her shoulder before stalking from the room with Jace at her heels.

The whole situation had my mind spinning.

Cayden had a sister, who scolded him about him having a breeder...

Cayden turned with a sigh and faced me. His cold eyes glanced over my body, leaving me with a feeling of uncertainty.

“We have dinner tonight. Kas will come by to get you ready shortly. You do not leave this room without Kas, Talon, or me. Do you understand, Tori?”

Yes, stay in the room...those were the most frequent words I had heard lately, but without any delay, I nodded. “Yes.”

With that, he didn’t wait a moment longer before storming from the room and closing the door behind him. I was left with my own thoughts and so many questions that didn’t have answers.

Being a breeder was never an honorable thing, but what choice did I have?
